We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU: Lorrain's Logbook: Notes from a Missionary in Mizoram, Northeast India (1891-1936) Edited by Kyle Jackson; Natasha McConnell; and Nick Gill Lorrain’s Logbook: Notes from a Missionary in Mizoram, Northeast India (1891-1936) expands the archive for students of Northeast India. Authored by James Herbert Lorrain (Pu Buanga)—one of the most significant missionaries and linguists to operate in the colonial Indo-Burma borderlands—the Logbook is a record of personal observations across decades, from Lorrain’s arrival in Bengal in 1890 to his departure in 1932 from the Lushai Hills District (today: Mizoram). This entirely new digital transcription and text-searchable online educational resource (OER) unlocks a vital archival source for researchers of imperial frontiers, Asian borderlands, missionization, Mizo history, and beyond. Hello, Open educational resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials licensed to be freely owned, shared, and in most cases, modified. While the development of OER is rooted in the belief that education should be equitably distributed, the potential to develop, create, and share resources within Western understandings of knowledge and ownership of information, can run counter to Indigenous perspectives, traditions, and information practices. Our research study seeks to centre the Indigenous perspective on open education principles and processes, with a focus on OER development in Canadian academic institutions. Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives

Hello! I want to share this new article that was recently published by KPU faculty member Deirdre Maultsaid and TRU faculty member Michelle Harrison. This publication is the result of Deirdre’s year working with us as an Open Education Research Fellow and explores student perspectives on Open Pedagogy. Can Open Pedagogy Encourage Care? Student Perspectives<https://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/6901> Abstract: As a response to the increasing commercialization of postsecondary education, educators argue for a practice of care in education. Open pedagogy (OP) seems like an ideal practice where care, trust, and inclusion can be realized. OP is characterized as a democratic and collaborative pedagogical practice, in which students and teachers work to co-create learning and knowledge using openly licensed materials, open platforms, and other open processes. The purposes of this study were, first, to reveal ways students in postsecondary institutions perceive care and, second, to determine how students suggest OP can be used to create an open/caring learning process. A task-oriented focus group method engaged students from four teaching-focused institutions. The students created open cases on social issues for class discussion and reflected on care and OP processes in postsecondary settings. Using four elements of the ethics of care—attentiveness, responsibility, competence, and trustworthiness—as conceptual categories, the study examined students’ experience of care and care in OP using affective coding and thematic analysis. The results showed that through OP, with teacher support and explicitly designed practices of care, students can assert their agency, have quintessential roles in creating and participating in highly relevant curriculum and importantly, care about others, and be cared for. OP is a process able to involve a diverse population of students and embody care as an all-encompassing practice. We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU: Stitched sewing techniques, how-to, and more By: Heather Clark and Catherine Hay [cid:image001.jpg(a)01D9E7B7.04986D30] Within the fashion, sewing, and textile classrooms it is a challenge to find a textbook on the topic of sewing that covers the range of skills and techniques taught within these learning spaces. Typically to supplement student learning, handouts will be utilized along with in-class, and in-person demos. The open-source and online format of this OER will enable educators to continually update the resource to meet current student needs, learning outcomes, and reflect best practices within the apparel and fashion industry. Content in this OER supports skills and knowledge learned within the classroom while providing supportive resources for learners. This open-source learning resource contains details and step-by-step instructions, supported with images, videos, and text. This resource will be continually worked on, with videos, text, and information being added. The vision for this resource is to provide learning resources to the sewing community – an array of learners, with multiple ways of ‘how-to’. Since learning an additional language and the culture is a journey in itself, ¡Voy en camino! captures the voyage to get there. ¡Voy en camino! has been created to serve the first two introductory Spanish language courses at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and to solidify our commitment to Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC). All units of study are designed to be interactive with embedded audio, videos and links for learners to practice the material along the way. New OER: Gender in Canada - A Companion Workbook

We’re excited to share with you the following new OER that has just been published at KPU: Gender in Canada: A Companion Workbook Edited by: Rebecca Yoshizawa Primary Subjects: Gender studies, gender groups [cid:image001.png(a)01D95C98.C39708E0] This workbook is designed for first or second-year sociology of gender or gender studies courses, focusing on the Canadian context. It is divided into five topics - Theory and Concepts, Institutions, Work, Family and Intimate Relationships, and Bodies and Health. This workbook does not replace a textbook, instructor teachings through lectures, class discussion, class assignments, or other standard undergraduate course materials. Instead, this is an activity book: a course companion, working alongside and with those course materials. It is designed to build competency, capacity, and confidence with course materials, concepts, and arguments. It does this by embracing the concepts of embodied learning, iterative scaffolding, and reflexive insight. "Embodied" means doing things with your body and not just your mind; "scaffolding" means breaking things down into constituent parts that can be gathered together to build something bigger; and "reflexive" means thinking about oneself in relation to broad concepts and contexts around us. The workbook presents four types of content. (1) Each chapter has one or two pages of written content deemed "Insights to Think About," which are summative guides to help students grab onto big ideas. (2) The chapters also have "Words to Try," encouraging a usable lexicon. (3) Chapters have thoughtfully designed "Activities." The activities help students to get ideas down, give those ideas meaning and order, and prepare students to do more engaged work in course conversations and higher-stakes assignments. (4) Finally, each section ends with "My Insights On," where students can record their "big picture" ideas and things they want to explore more in their course discussions and other assignments. The first part of this collection is a selection of stories written by KPU Spanish 1100 students between Fall 2017 and Spring 2019. The second part of this collection is a selection of stories written by KPU Spanish 1101 students between Fall 2020 and Spring 2022. Next week for Open Education Week KPU is proud to host Open Pedagogy expert Karen Cangialosi for a talk on: Bringing Open Pedagogy to Life Open Pedagogy contextualizes learning in a larger world outside of the classroom making education more relevant, inclusive, equitable and accessible. It enables students to leverage open licenses in order to contribute to the knowledge commons and engage in dialogue with the wider public; but it also supports them to take greater ownership of how and what they learn. By prioritizing connection and community over methodology and content, students in open pedagogy classrooms use a critical lens in their use of digital tools for discovery, creativity and analysis. Open Pedagogy also means trusting students and supporting especially the most marginalized to find and raise their voices, and it can mean empowering students to be the change agents that they would like to be in the world. Topics addressed in this toolkit may include anti-racism, anti-oppression, anti-ableism, sexuality and gender discrimination, inclusive learning practice, and settler of colour experiences. Their goal is to provide in-service and pre-service teachers with practical and applicable approaches to addressing this content in their teaching, or for facing challenges related to these issues as they arise in day-to-day practice. Interested contributors are asked to send a brief proposal (maximum 300 words) to the team by March 1, 2023. Final papers and other content are due July 1, 2023. Introduction to Criminology Edited by Dr. Shereen Hassan and Dan Lett, MAS  [cid:image001.png(a)01D937D6.06935C30] Link to Resource: Introduction to Criminology<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/introcrim/> Although this open education resource (OER) is written with the needs and abilities of first-year undergraduate criminology students in mind, it is designed to be flexible. As a whole, the OER is amply broad to serve as the main textbook for an introductory course, yet each chapter is deep enough to be useful as a supplement for subject-area courses; authors use plain and accessible language as much as possible, but introduce more advanced, technical concepts where appropriate; the text gives due attention to the historical “canon” of mainstream criminological thought, but it also challenges many of these ideas by exploring alternative, critical, and marginalized perspectives. After all, criminology is more than just the study of crime and criminal law; it is an examination of the ways human societies construct, contest, and defend ideas about right and wrong, the meaning of justice, the purpose and power of laws, and the practical methods of responding to broken rules and of mending relationships. In partnership with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training (AEST) and the Digital Learning Advisory Committee—a group of people with deep and broad expertise and experience across the sector—BCcampus is pleased to be leading the development of a collection of open materials to support digital literacy in B.C. post-secondary institutions. This collection will include high-quality, openly licensed courses and resources to support the development of digital literacy knowledge, skills, and abilities. Notice: Pressbooks versions of OpenStax books to be archived

Dear Open Community, I am writing to let you know that BCcampus will be archiving the Pressbooks versions of OpenStax books that we have hosted in our Pressbooks instance since 2019. They will be taken down officially on July 29, 2022. Right now, all of these books have notices at the top of the webbook that points people to the up to date version of the book by OpenStax. (The date on the notice says July 6, but we have extended the availability of these Pressbooks copies it to the end of the month). We have decided to archive these versions for two reasons: 1. A number of formatting errors were introduced during the original import from OpenStax. As such, a lot of clean up work is needed to make these books usable. 2. The books are now quite out of date and we are unable to update them. In addition, OpenStax has published new editions for a number of them. We want to make sure people are referring to the most up to date versions in their courses. If you would like to copy any of these books into your own Pressbooks instance, you are welcome to clone them. They will be available until July 29. The New B.C. Open Collection

Open Collection can be found at collection.bccampus.ca, which is a site that initially held open course packs first released by BCcampus in 2020. This site now contains both these open course packs and the contents of the B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/> hosted at open.bccampus.ca. The old collection on the open.bccampus.ca site will remain online for the time being, but will eventually be retired at an undetermined date. BCcampus OER Production Webinar Series: July and August 2022

Dear colleagues, This summer, the BCcampus OER Production team is hosting an OER Production webinar series<https://bccampus.ca/calendar-3/tag_ids~859/> on using and creating open educational resources (OER). The same series was held in November 2021. The five webinars in the series are as follows: 1. Find, Use, Share OER on July 21. Are you new to open education and not sure where to start? Are you just starting your own OER project and wondering where to find other openly licensed materials and what to do with them? This webinar will answer all these questions by providing an introduction to open education and OER, discussing copyright and Creative Commons licenses, and going over how you can find, use, and properly attribute OER. 2. Introduction to Pressbooks on July 28. This is part one of two that will discuss how to use Pressbooks to create and share open educational resources (OER). We will introduce Pressbooks and show you how to create and share OER with students and fellow educators. Topics include an introduction to Pressbooks, how to create an account, how to create a book in Pressbooks, and an overview of the Pressbooks editor. The webinar will also introduce such topics as creating math equations using MathJax, importing content, H5P, and sharing books in multiple formats. 3. Technical Accessibility on August 11. This is part one of our exploration of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning in open educational resources (OER). In this webinar, we will introduce how to design OER so they meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). We describe the principles behind WCAG, introduce some different assistive technologies, and explain how to create accessible tables, images, videos, audio, links, and math equations. By creating educational materials with accessibility in mind, we can ensure these resources are more useful, powerful, and accessible to all. This session will include lots of concrete examples and opportunities to apply learning. 4. Applying UDL for Learning to OER on August 16. This is part two of our exploration of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in open educational resources (OER). In this session we build on what we know about technical accessibility to explore how we can go beyond minimum accessibility requirements. We dig into concepts like the social model of disability and how UDL can be applied in the design of OER. We explore multimodality as well as the benefits, challenges, and considerations of digital vs. print formats. This session will include lots of concrete examples and opportunities to apply learning. 5. Advanced Pressbooks on August 25. This webinar is a continuation of the introductory Pressbooks webinar, where we taught the basics of the platform. Here, we will explore various advanced features of Pressbooks. You will see a Pressbooks demonstration in real-time and learn complex Pressbooks topics in a hands-on way. Topics included are basic H5P, LaTeX, adding users and user roles, internal links and anchors, footnotes, the glossary tool, importing content, and custom styles. Hope you will join us for this webinar: Indigenous Open Educational Resources: Respectfully Uplifting Community Voices May 24, 2022 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am Open education is grounded in Western understandings of ownership, protocol, and accessibility. Often open education has a goal of making all knowledges available for all peoples. Within Canadian copyright law is tension with Indigenous knowledges and Indigenous ways of knowing and being. The open education community must carefully consider Indigenous knowledges and self-determination, which are deeply rooted in community-defined ethics and protocols and do not fit into ordinary academic contexts. This session will explore some of the concerns around open educational resources (OER) and Indigenous knowledges while using Indigenous worldviews to better understand how Indigenous knowledges can be respectfully incorporated into OER. Facilitator Kayla Lar-Son is of Métis and Ukranian settler ancestry, originally from Treaty Six territory, Tofield, Alberta. Hello All A new report has been published by Achieving the Dream and SRI Education. This study addresses the urgent need to better understand how the use of OER can support educational equity, particularly in educational settings that serve historically marginalized student populations. The report identifies five dimensions of open education and culturally responsive teaching: * Study agency and ownership, or the extent to which the course and positions students as leaders of their learning * Inclusive content, or how the instructor brings in diverse perspectives and tailors the content to students’ backgrounds * Collaborative knowledge generation, or how students apply/develop new theories or contribute to “renewable” or generative assignments. * Critical consciousness, or how the instructor provides students with real-world assignments, decolonizes the curriculum, and addresses power imbalances * Classroom culture, or how the instructor cultivates strong relationships and an inclusive environment The study is based on interviews with faculty and administrators, student focus groups, and course observations at eight community colleges, and is a careful examination of teaching practice among committed OER users and technology-oriented faculty members.
