Incident Resolved: BCcampus Cybersecurity Event (Pressbooks)
by BC Open 27 Feb '26

27 Feb '26
Dear Pressbooks users, We are pleased to advise you that the cybersecurity incident affecting BCcampus Pressbooks site, which was first identified on February 24, has been fully resolved. What Happened: The incident involved an overwhelming amount of traffic to pressbooks.bccampus.ca and opentextbc.ca causing intermittent access to the sites. Our response team worked swiftly to deal with the issue. Resolution Actions Taken: * Identified the root cause of the incident * Conducted thorough security assessments and improved resilience of Pressbooks services to such traffic spikes * Restored viewing and editing access to pressbooks.bccampus.ca and opentextbc.ca Next Steps: We recommend that you download offline copies of books from opentextbc.ca and pressbooks.bccampus.ca in case access is ever suspended. If you are a Pressbooks author, we recommended making export files available for download so your users don't lose access during an outage. We also encourage you to take virtual snapshots of books you are interested in by using web.archive.org<https://web.archive.org/>. For ongoing updates and resources, please visit this page: Pressbooks Cybersecurity Incident<https://bccampus.ca/2026/02/26/pressbooks-cybersecurity-incident/>. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued trust throughout this process. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at support(a)bccampus.ca<mailto:support@bccampus.ca>. by BC Open 26 Feb '26

26 Feb '26
Dear BC Open Pressbooks users, The BCcampus team continues to work diligently to restore all affected systems as quickly and safely as possible. As of February 26 at 8:00 p.m., key services including opentextbc.ca, and pressbooks.bccampus.ca are intermittently available to read. We are still restricting the editing of books to prevent any work from being lost. BCcampus IT Support and our web host continue to monitor the situation. What We Have Learned: * Our investigation has determined there is no evidence that customer data has been misused * Our web host is working to improve security measures to protect from future outages What You Need to Do: When the sites are working, we advise you to download offline copies of books from opentextbc.ca and pressbooks.bccampus.ca in case the sites go down again. We also encourage you to take virtual snapshots of books you are interested in by using web.archive.org<https://web.archive.org/>. Next Steps: We remain committed to transparency. We will share another update tomorrow, or sooner if important information becomes available. This page will continue to be updated: Pressbooks Cybersecurity Incident<https://bccampus.ca/2026/02/26/pressbooks-cybersecurity-incident/>. Important Notice: BCcampus Cybersecurity Incident
by BC Open 26 Feb '26

26 Feb '26
Dear colleagues, BCcampus recently identified a cybersecurity incident affecting the servers for pressbooks.bccampus.ca and opentextbc.ca. As soon as we became aware, we activated our incident response protocols and began investigating the situation. At this time, Pressbooks may be temporarily unavailable as we work to contain and assess the scope of the incident. Protecting your information and restoring full services is our highest priority. As such, we have locked all users out of editing pressbooks.bccampus.ca. This means that you cannot edit your books at this time. This is in an effort to prevent any work from being lost. What you should know: * We are investigating the nature and extent of the incident. * There is no evidence that your user data has been misused. If we discover specific information has been compromised, we will notify those affected directly. * Our team has implemented additional safeguards and monitoring to protect our network during this period. We understand the importance of transparency and will provide updated information as our investigation progresses. In the meantime, we encourage you to use downloaded copies of books from pressbooks.bccampus.ca and opentextbc.ca or check web.archive.org<https://web.archive.org/> to see if a virtual snapshot has been made of the book you are trying to access. If the book you are trying to access is hosted in the B.C. Open Collection<https://collection.bccampus.ca/>, contact open(a)bccampus.ca for a PDF. Thank you for your understanding and trust. These digital badges would be earned by submitting evidence of existing open education work to be evaluated against a competency framework. This kind of initiative is known as prior learning and assessment recognition (PLAR). Badges would be available for open educators, open librarians, and open instructional designers. The goal of these badges would be to formally recognize the expertise of open education practitioners without requiring them to complete further professional development. The results will be shared with an external contractor who will analyze the responses and provide recommendations to BCcampus. This survey is anonymous unless you share your contact information in the survey. Any questions or concerns about this survey can be directed to Josie Gray, Interim Director, Open Education (jgray(a)bccampus.ca<mailto:jgray@bccampus.ca>). You can complete the survey here: Survey: BCcampus Open Education Digital Badges – Fill out form<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=Wj14YBrwB0mlW1wDaIb5ww-…> Survey responses will be accepted until February 20.
