The below message is sent on behalf of the primary investigator, Deirdre Maultsaid,
School of Business.
Dear Colleagues:
Recall that I am the KPU Open Education Research Fellow, 2021 and am doing a research
project on care and open pedagogy, at Douglas, KPU, Langara and TRU, Ethics ID:
H21-01455.
We are still recruiting students for another 2 -3 weeks (not a fixed date; early
November). You have helped so much. Can you please re-disseminate the attached invitations
to students (via the same channels) to participate in the research focus groups. I
provide an email version, a short paragraph version and two social media post versions,
depending upon the channels you wish to use. I have also attached the KPU Logo, which I
request you include with the text if possible. Please only disseminate the message to
students via email, not by posting it into your Learning Management System as using your
LMS is not approved by ethics boards, for lots of good reasons.
You were using your Open Education listservs, your staff channels such as the library, or
Accessibility Services, or Learning Centre tutors or research groupings, or your
Indigenous Services Facebook page, your International Student Office channels and so on
and even select Twitter accounts. Whatever you can do again would be so appreciated. We
are so grateful.
I wish I could write to you all personally, but I am running midterms for my own students
right now. Sorry and thanks.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Will you please confirm that you
have disseminated the messages so that I can track research communications. Thank you so
much for your help.

Subject: [Openkpu] Invitation for Students to Participate in Research Study
The below message is sent on behalf of the primary investigator, Deirdre Maultsaid,
School of Business.
Dear Colleagues:
I am Deirdre Maultsaid, the KPU Open Education Research Fellow, 2021 and am doing a
research project on care and open pedagogy, at the following four British Columbia
institutions: Douglas, KPU, Langara and TRU (Ethics ID: H21-01455).
I am recruiting students and hope that you can make an announcement to your students at
the above four institutions. Can you please disseminate the attached invitation or
embedded invitation to students to participate in the research focus groups. Please only
disseminate the message to students via email, not by posting it into your Learning
Management System as using your LMS is not approved by ethics boards, for lots of good
reasons.
You do not have to promote or advocate for this research; you can simply send the approved
invitation. Not to worry, when students go to the link, there is a full consent process
before they participate.
Any questions, Deirdre.maultsaid@kpu.ca<mailto:Deirdre.maultsaid@kpu.ca>
Thank you so much for helping to disseminate this invitation.
*MESSAGE TO STUDENTS:*
[cidimage005.jpg(a)01D7AFC1.106DCFE0]
Students: Please help us find out if creating open pedagogy inspires you to care more.
Please join a voluntary focus group with students from Douglas, KPU, Langara, and TRU in
order to help create free and open learning materials. You will attend two to three group
sessions of 2.5 hours each, to create cases for class discussions. Your initial
questionnaire, focus group and reflections on the process will be analyzed to see if the
process of students creating learning materials encourages you to care more for yourself,
other students, teachers and the postsecondary community. You could be acknowledged by
name as a co-author of the open resource/book, which will be used in BC and beyond. You
will have helped to create caring, relevant, ethical study materials. Also, you will
receive a $30 gift card. Please click the link below to provide your contact information,
to answer a few questions in order to create your profile and to give your consent to the
research project.
