Apply for the Certificate in Open Pedagogy (formerly Open Educational Practices) through the Open Education Network
The Open Education Network is accepting applications for faculty and faculty partners (librarians, instructional designers, etc.) to receive a certification in open pedagogy. Applicants should be higher education faculty, librarians, instructional designers, and others who have a lesson, unit, or other educational experience that they wish to transform through the use of open pedagogy. Participants will pilot their transformed curriculum in the spring of 2025. The Certificate in Open Pedagogy offers formal training in open pedagogy as grounded in the principles of social justice, a community of peers, and expert instructors in order to transform learning to be more accessible and inclusive. Participants who successfully complete the full program will receive a Certificate in Open Pedagogy from the Open Education Network (University of Minnesota) and 60 Credit Hour Units (CEU's). While we prefer applicants who apply as a team (faculty + partner), we will do our best to pair individuals who do not have someone with whom to partner.
About the Certificate in Open Pedagogy
The Certificate in Open Pedagogy is a professional development program that will create actionable pathways for faculty and librarians to implement open education for the transformation of learning.
Faculty and partners (librarians, instructional designers, etc.) will complete a nine-week long, asynchronous course in the spring of 2025 about the range of open educational practices with modules on the hallmarks of open education, copyright and Creative Commons licensing, the hallmarks of open pedagogy, the benefits and limitations of OEP, accessibility, and student empowerment and agency. Together, the faculty and faculty partner pairs will create an Action Plan to be implemented the following spring that seeks to transform learning through the power of open education.
In addition, the cohort will benefit from close engagement with program faculty—open education leaders who have gained expertise through experience, professional development, and participation in various national initiatives.
The integrated components of the certification program include online content, instructor-led cohorts, and action plan support and assessment.
In order to assure we can offer personalized attention to participants throughout the program, the cohort will be limited to 20 teams (5 teams per instructor) or 50 participants total.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
1. Gain fluency in open pedagogy, including core benefits, challenges, and potential;
2. Identify the synergy between the principles of social justice and open education;
3. Create a personalized action plan that will provide the building blocks for an educational experience (module, lesson, unit, etc.) to be transformed through the use of open pedagogy;
4. Consider best practices of accessibility when designing the action plan
5. Center the needs of students and consider their empowerment and agency while designing and implementing the action plan;
6. Develop strategies for assessing the effectiveness of the action plan;
7. Connect and collaborate with a cohort of higher ed. professionals dedicated to developing open education in order to create more accessible, inclusive learning.
Selection Criteria
Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. A CV demonstrating your responsibilities as a faculty member or librarian;
2. A completed questionnaire that provides information about you and your institution;
3. A clearly articulated interest in open education and desire to make learning more equitable and inclusive through the power of open education;
4. A desire to revise curriculum or support the revision of curriculum through open pedagogy and the demonstrated agency to do so.
Certificate Calendar
January 5 - March 9, 2025: Participants will participate in asynchronous online instruction, including readings and discussions with their cohorts.
April 9 & 10: Project Symposium for participants to share the OEP Action Plan they developed and refined throughout the online course. Online course assessment will be shared.
Fall 2025: Participants will implement their OEP projects. One or more synchronous calls with cohorts will be planned for participants to share questions, reflections, and encouragement as they implement their action plans with their librarian partner while receiving instructional support.
End of fall 2025: Program assessment by participants is planned.

Study participants. This study explores the experiences of KPU faculty who teach online classes using open pedagogy to support social justice. Therefore, to participate, you:
* must be currently employed as a faculty member in any discipline at KPU
* may be employed at KPU part-time or full-time
* may be employed at KPU with a short-term contract (non-regular type 1), a long-term contract (non-regular type 2), or may have permanent status (regularized)
* must be currently teaching one or more online classes in which you use open pedagogy to support social justice, and/or may have taught in one or more online classes in the past where you used open pedagogy to support social justice, and/or may be scheduled to teach in one or more online classes in an upcoming semester where you will use open pedagogy to support social justice
For the purposes of this study:
* Online courses can include courses that are synchronous, asynchronous, blended, or that are otherwise mediated through an internet connection.
* Open pedagogy can include (but is not limited to) students creating or co-creating open resources, open content, H5P resources, or open textbooks; creating resources for a community or client; creating teachable content or resources for students; blogging; podcasting; or creating or co-creating a rubric.
Study description. Participating in this study will involve being interviewed twice by the principal investigator. The interviews will be private/one-on-one and will be held virtually through MS Teams. Each interview is anticipated to require a time commitment of 60-90 minutes (2-3 hours total), and each interview will be recorded and then transcribed. The interviews will collect information about your experiences using open pedagogy in online courses to support social justice. The principal investigator will work with each study participant to determine the interview days/times.
Voluntary participation. Your participation in this research project is completely voluntary. Refusal to participate in this study will not impact our relationship as colleagues.
Full withdrawal of consent. If you choose to withdraw from an interview in full, any information you have shared in that interview will be deleted and will not used in the analysis of the data. You can inform the researcher of your full withdrawal either verbally or by sending an email. You can fully withdraw consent for the first interview at any time until you have reviewed the first interview transcript. This will be scheduled to take place at the beginning of the second interview. However, should you wish to not participate in a second interview or are otherwise unavailable to participate in a second interview, you will have one week from the date the researcher provides you with a digital copy of your first interview transcript to withdraw your full consent. No response to a request to review your first interview transcript will be assumed to indicate consent remains intact and in full. Full withdrawal from the second interview is possible only until one week from the date the researcher provides you with a digital copy of your second interview transcript for review. No response to a request to review your second interview transcript will be assumed to indicate consent remains intact and in full.
Partial withdrawal of consent. After each interview, you will have an opportunity to review the transcript to see if there are any portions you withdraw consent from being included. If you choose to withdraw one or more portions of your interviews, any information that is being withdrawn will be deleted and will not used in the analysis of the data. You can inform the researcher which portions you withdraw either verbally or by sending an email. Risks. There are no known physical risks to participating in this research project. However, because the study is collecting data pertaining to your lived experience, it is possible that sensitive topics could be discussed, potentially resulting in emotional distress. Benefits. KPU faculty members who participate in the study will have the opportunity to share their experiences in using open pedagogy to support social justice in their online classes, and this information could then potentially be used by university administrators to improve support for open pedagogy and social justice. Additionally, participants may have a better understanding of their own teaching practices and positionality, which can potentially help facilitate their own further reflection and professional development as a post-secondary educator.
Compensation. No compensation is provided for participating in this study.
Confidentiality, data retention, and data security. Your privacy and confidentiality will be protected throughout this study. You are encouraged to use headphones and a private space when you are being interviewed. Electronic data collected by the principal investigator will be stored on secure servers located in Canada at Athabasca University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Information you provide will be de-identified, anonymous, and kept confidential. During the analysis of the data, pseudonyms will be assigned to the participants, and names of courses, course codes, or other information that could directly or indirectly be used to identify participants will be anonymized and de-identified. The study results will be used, presented, and published by the principal investigator in partial fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Education at Athabasca University. As well, the anonymized results of this research may be presented at workshops, conferences, and/or in publications.
Data collected in support of this research project will be retained for a period of five years following the completion of the study (anticipated completion: December 2025).

It draws on the fields of marketing, business, communications, media studies, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. The book invites readers to examine the internal forces that shape consumer decision making, such as perceptions, motivations, personality, and attitudes as well as the external ones, such as social and situational influences, culture, and subcultures. This text centres the lived experiences of today’s consumers, specifically, undergraduate students. The author has also made efforts to decentre whiteness and dominant culture perspectives wherever possible to ensure a broader and more accurate representation of diverse consumers.

The OEN has heard our community ask for more help understanding and using open pedagogy, so we’ve created a collaborative, resource-rich learning environment over the course of seven synchronous, one-hour sessions this spring. Join our virtual, facilitated Learning Circle to share, learn, discuss, and create open pedagogy! There is no cost for participation. We are looking for a total of 12 participants from OEN member institutions for this offering of Open Pedagogy Learning Circles. We try to vary the enrollment, so we are hoping for a combination of instructors/faculty, and librarians, instructional designers or other roles that directly support faculty in pedagogy-related concerns.

* Build a foundational understanding of open pedagogy to be expanded upon through activities that allow for a collaborative definition of open pedagogy.
* Discover what open pedagogy does as well as and how it can be incorporated in the classroom through exposure to a variety of engaging open pedagogy assignments.
* Gain hands-on experience with open pedagogy through creation of a renewable assignment or digital learning object.
Facilitator
The Learning Circle on Open Pedagogy will be facilitated by OEN Open Educational Practices Specialist, Jamie Witman, who will also be available for consultations outside of the synchronous sessions to assist you with your questions related to open pedagogy.

We are now accepting applications for 12 participants from OEN member institutions who are interested in learning more about open pedagogy. Applicants should be faculty (Adjuncts/instructors are welcome!) or higher ed. practitioners who directly support faculty (librarians, instructional designers, etc.).

Participants will be selected based on the following:
1. Desire to learn more about open pedagogy
2. Commitment to the creation of a renewable assignment/digital learning object
3. Ability to attend and engage in all seven sessions
4. Willingness to give feedback about the Learning Circle experience

In February, we requested your participation in our research study “Assessing the Authorship of Open Education Resources: A Study of Demographics, Expectations, and Experiences.” We are excited to share that we had a tremendous response to our request! Though we are happy with the response, we are still seeking more participants for our study. If you have not completed the survey, please do so before the end of next week, as we will begin analyzing the data and moving forward with the project soon. Please do not fill out the survey again if you have already responded.
As a reminder, this project aims to explore OER (Open Education Resources) textbook authorship. Research in OERs is relatively new, and some questions have yet to be explored empirically. It is currently unknown what demographic groups tend to author OERs or from what institutions OERs tend to emanate. Therefore, our study is an attempt to describe the typical OER author to encourage a diverse pool of OER authors in the future. Using publicly and privately available data, we will assess OER authorship. In the first phase of the study, we will gather the title, subject area, year of publication, author(s)’ name, and author(s)’ email address of each OER textbook in the OER Commons’ Open Textbooks hub (https://oercommons.org/hubs/open-textbooks). Then, we will recruit participants to complete a survey, in which we will assess demographic information about OER authors, current position, current institution, and other demographic information. Finally, we will conduct interviews with a sample of survey participants to understand the experience of an OER author.
We have identified you as an author of an OER textbook in the OER Commons’ Open Textbooks hub (https://oercommons.org/hubs/open-textbooks). If you recieve multiple email invitation, it is because you authored multiple texts in the OER Commons database. Please only reply to one of these invitations. We would appreciate your participation in this study by completing a brief study on your demographic information and motivation for writing an OER textbook. Participation is complete optional. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey you will be asked if you are interested in participating in a follow-up interview about your experiences. This aspect of the study is also optional and is not required for participation in the survey.

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has created the Indigenous Education Stock Photos collection<https://indigenouseducationstockphotos.trubox.ca/> due to a lack of open-source photos of Indigenous students for use in OER. The spirit of the photo collection is to allow educators to represent Indigenous peoples in their OER so that Indigenous students can see themselves reflected in their learning materials.
This project was funded jointly by BCcampus and the TRU OER Development Grant and developed in consultation with the TRU Office of Indigenous Education and a TRU community stakeholder session. TRU production and media teams and the TRU Open Press assisted in producing the content.

If anyone is interested in learning more about H5P (usable in Moodle, Pressbooks, and Wordpress), UBC is hosting an H5P Symposium on February 21st and 22nd<https://blogs.ubc.ca/h5psymposium/>. In this multi-day online symposium, they aim to further explore how interactivity and opportunities for formative assessment can be embedded into passive learning materials with a special focus on creating interactive videos.
The 2024 H5P Symposium will also explore evidence-based best practices for (a) creating good formative assessment questions, (b) providing timely feedback, and (c) how (and when) to create branching interactive videos that respond and adapt to student feedback. The Symposium will highlight H5P’s strengths and limitations, and highlight successful examples of implementation and course integration for various content types. We will also offer studio time with the support of experienced content creators to introduce you to the authoring platform and help you brainstorm how it could be used in your context.
