I’m thrilled to announce the launch of InclusiveAccess.org<https://www.inclusiveaccess.org/>: a community-driven initiative to raise awareness of the facts about automatic textbook billing.
Little known five years ago, Inclusive Access has taken off as a sales model that automatically adds the cost of digital textbooks into students’ tuition and fees. While this model is intended to address some of the challenges with high textbook costs, it is also creating new challenges for students and faculty.
How exactly does Inclusive Access work? Does it really save students money? What about this kind of program is “inclusive”? Straightforward answers to these questions aren’t always easy to find.
InclusiveAccess.org is a one-stop-shop for information, tools, and other resources to help administrators, faculty, students, and policymakers make informed decisions about Inclusive Access and its implications for the campus community.

Call for Expressions of Interest – CARL Visiting Program Officer for Open Education

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/> is the national voice of Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries and two federal institutions. A bilingual not-for-profit organization, CARL coordinates national initiatives across its member institutions and promotes their causes to achieve excellence in research and higher education.
CARL invites applications for a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) focused in the area of open education (OE). The position will entail working for CARL for the equivalent of one day per week, and is expected to start in October 2021, for a period of one year. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 10, 2021.
Visiting Program Officer positions are an arrangement between CARL and the individual’s home institution, normally for a minimum period of one year at 20% of their time. There is no salary remuneration from CARL associated with this position; the home institution continues to pay the Visiting Program Officer’s salary. Benefits arising from this experience for the incumbent and the home institution include broadened experience and knowledge gained from working on national initiative; while for CARL and its members, the position helps advance a common priority.
In 2018, CARL identified OE leadership as an important area for capacity building within its institutions. CARL has since formed an Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/advancing-research/scholarly-communication/open-ed…> and led activities and programs designed to bolster practice and support the development of national leadership in this area. CARL has also initiated engagement with other post-secondary stakeholder groups in considering strategies for increasing the momentum of open education in Canada. The VPO for OE will guide CARL’s evolving program of open education initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITY:
In collaboration with Joy Kirchner, chair of CARL’s Open Education Working Group (OEWG), and with Lise Brin, CARL’s full-time Program Officer supporting the Advancing Research Committee’s initiatives, the VPO will take a leading role in planning and delivering CARL’s OE efforts, working closely with the CARL Open Education Working Group to shape its slate of OE-related activities and communications plan and deliver these activities, including but not limited to “OeLE Light,” a workshop-in-a-box version of the Open Education Leadership Essentials workshop offered by the OEWG in 2020, and CARL’s communication activities related to OER.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be based at a Canadian post-secondary institution;
* Must have obtained library director’s agreement for the arrangement with CARL as described;
* Possesses excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
* Has proven group facilitation skills or will have successfully delivered training programs to peers, and demonstrates the ability to ensure diverse experiences and perspectives are treated respectfully;
* Has project management experience;
* Has significant experience and expertise in the areas of open education and open educational resources;
* The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in French and English will be deemed an asset.
If there are multiple candidates who fulfil the criteria above, selection will be based on demonstrated leadership, prior involvement, and level of institutional support; and may involve an interview.

BCcampus is offering five scholarships of $200 each to five faculty or staff to participate in the Regional Leaders of Open Education (RLOE) Network<https://www.cccoer.org/rloe/>. This amount would cover the entire cost of the program, which will be held online.
This scholarship opportunity<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/scholarship-opportunity-to-p…> provides the chance for faculty and staff at B.C. public post-secondary institutions to learn about how open educational resources and practices can help their students and to receive valuable mentorship from open education leaders on how to implement an institutional open education strategy.
The program requires a commitment of 12 synchronous hours and 12 asynchronous hours. The program will run for three cohorts, each of which will be in session during one of these date ranges:
* October 25 to November 12, 2021
* January 24 to February 11, 2022
* May 23 to June 10, 2022
The deadline to apply for the first cohort is Tuesday, September 10.

I am writing to let you know about a BCcampus expression of interest request regarding the development of open courses<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/expression-of-interest-devel…>.
In summer 2020, BCcampus began creating a collection of open courses<https://collection.bccampus.ca/> to assist instructors and course developers in creating and updating their courses, particularly while transitioning from in-person teaching to online. The collection currently contains nine full courses that are openly licensed and ready for use.
We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/> to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook.
Up to $8000 is available per grant, depending on how much work is required.
Deadline for submissions is September 20, 2021.

I would like to pass on information about the inaugural Conference for Antiracist Teaching, Language, and Assessment, called ATLA 2021<https://www.atlaconf.com/>. Their website describes the event as, "An opportunity for instructors across a variety of disciplines to meet, share ideas, and build antiracist approaches to teaching and learning."
This free digital conference will be held via Zoom in the Pacific time zone on Friday, September 17, and Friday, October 1. Between conference days, there will also be asynchronous activities "focused on taking actionable steps towards enacting antiracist teaching in our lives and classrooms."

Open Education Policy Forum is coming back on September 15-16 for the sixth time (and online, too). We are looking forward to seeing you at the end of the summer to discuss the “Universe of Openness,” but today, we are excited to announce an Open Call for two key events that will be held during the Forum:
* Lightning talks – presentation of the most inspiring Open Education initiatives from the time of the pandemic [September 15]. In the tradition of exchanging the best practices from Open Education, we’re seeking inspiring initiatives. Have you completed a project or started an inspirational initiative within OE Policy in the past year and are you willing to share it with the Open Education community? If so, we’re looking for you! You’ll have up to 7 minutes to present your project to the world.
* Workshops for policy makers and OE activists [September 16]. In small groups of up to 15 participants, where every person can be heard and bring their unique perspective and experience, we want to talk about the future of Open Education. Our goal is to create realistic and achievable guidelines for the OE community in three areas:

About the Forum. Open Education Policy Forum is an international conference organised by Centrum Cyfrowe Foundation in cooperation with Communia Association, Hewlett Foundation, Intellectual Property Institute, OEGlobal, Otwarte Zasoby and SPARC Europe. Once a year, we bring together stakeholders (activists, researchers, teachers, policy makers) from around the world to exchange good practices and discuss challenges and opportunities faced by the Open Education community. We want to provide an opportunity for networking, exchange of knowledge and future collaborations.
“The Universe of Openness” – about the upcoming edition of the Forum. Open Education initiatives have been expanding extraordinarily since 2020. Resources, institutions and infrastructure built on the OE model provide resilience to educational systems at the beginning of remote education. The pandemic time has redefined “openness” in education. Now, with so many various projects in progress, we want to ask the following: how can the OE community maintain this growth? And how can we expand, explore and improve it in the upcoming future?
The conference will open with the premiere of a new pan-European study “Remote education during the pandemic: teachers perspective” conducted by Centrum Cyfrowe Foundation and Communia Association.

BCcampus Research Fellows 2021 - 2023
We invite research proposals from B.C. post-secondary students who are committed to exploring and improving student learning and eager to conduct and share research with others. For this call, only projects with student lead researchers will be considered. The deadline for proposals is October 31, 2021.
