The Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg>, in collaboration with the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA)<https://kusa.ca/>, has established an OER adoption grant to support faculty who wish to adopt OER in place of commercial textbooks and to recognize the efforts involved in implementing this change.
Individuals or teams teaching multi-section courses may apply for the grant. Successful individual applicants are eligible to receive up to a $500 towards the professional development activity of their choosing. Teams may receive up to $1,500 towards a group event, project or activity. Annual funding for the OER adoption grant fund is $10,000.
Ultimately, the purpose of the OER adoption grant is to reduce the cost of education to students while maximizing access to, and use of, textbooks and other learning resources, by all students--regardless of their financial circumstances.
Note: It is recognized that for pedagogical and practical reasons it may not be possible to adopt OER in every course/discipline.
Application guidelines
• Applicants must be regular faculty members.
• Faculty members or teams may only submit one application per course.
• The open textbook/OER must be a required resource for the course, replacing a commercial textbook or resource.
• The adoption of the OER must reduce the cost to students and increase their use of a learning resource.
• The number of course sections offered per year will be considered when adjudicating applications.
• The grant will be awarded to faculty or teams following their successful adoption of an open textbook or other OER.
• The OEWG will put out a call for applications each semester.
• The OEWG will review applications until the available funding has been allocated.
Note: The application form is attached to this email.

Open Education for a Better World (OE4BW) is an international online mentoring program, supporting the development and implementation of open educational resources that include and address at least one of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/>. This Call follows the first two cohorts of the OE4BW program where 49 Open Educational Resources (OER) projects were developed by 49 participants under the supervision of 67 mentors, coming from 25 countries from all over the globe. This included KPU’s own Christina Page (The Learning Centres) who served as a mentor and Andrea Niosi (Marketing) who was a participant.
So far, the developers and mentors were regionally coordinated by Hub leaders in the following three Regional Hubs:
* Africa and Europe Hub,
* Asia and South Pacific Hub,
* North and South America Hub.
In this year’s OE4BW Call, a new, topic-oriented SDG7 Hub (i.e. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all) is added.

The Festival of Learning is B.C.’s largest celebration of teaching and learning in higher education and will take place from May 11-13, 2020. Held every two years and welcoming about 500 attendees from all over B.C. and beyond, the Festival is a great opportunity for faculty, students, leaders, librarians, learning designers, educational technologists and accessibility/ disability educators and professionals to network and learn together.
This year’s theme is disruption and transformation in post-secondary education. The deadline for proposals is November 15, 2019.
We welcome your proposals from all areas of higher education as we grapple with key questions, such as:
* How are open educational practices (OEP) transforming teaching and learning? How do OEP disrupt traditional power structures and narratives in education? How are the open education and open access movements challenging the status quo? Where are they falling short?
* How are you “disrupting” teaching and learning practices, policies, and processes? What disruptions call for creative adaptation and change?
* How are you engaging in reconciliation, Indigenous pedagogy, decolonization, or Indigenization in your teaching and learning practices?
* Technology is often seen as a disruptor and catalyst for transformation. How can we effectively and creatively use educational technologies to support learning?
* What transformations are needed to make post-secondary institutions and learning environments inclusive and accessible to support every student?
* As educators, how do we respond skillfully to the global climate crisis? What is our role and responsibility to the planet at this critical time?

The Open Education Working Group is pleased to announce expanded support for the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open textbooks and other open educational resources (OER). Three types of grants<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants> are now available:
1. OER Adoption Grant
With the generous support of the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA)<https://kusa.ca/>, OER Adoption Grants are now available to support faculty who wish to adopt OER in place of commercial textbooks and aimed at recognizing the effort involved in implementing this change.
Applications will be adjudicated by the Open Education Working Group<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg> on a rolling basis until funds are spent.
2. OER Adaptation Grant
OER Adaptation projects may include proposals to adapt existing open textbooks by updating or localizing them, making them interactive by incorporating H5P applications<https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications>, or developing ancillary resources (such a question banks) to support existing open textbooks, including in collaboration with students (via open pedagogy) or with other faculty collaborators.
OER Adaptation Grants are funded by the Office of Open Education and adjudicated by the Open Education Working Group. Grant recipients receive funding up to $2000, which may be used to hire student assistants, pay honoraria to external collaborators, and more. In-kind assistance is also offered through Open Education, the Library, and Teaching & Learning Commons. Applications are reviewed three times a year (May 1, September 1, and January 15) until the available funding has been allocated.
3. OER Creation Grant
OER Creation projects may include proposals to author new open textbooks in areas of need. In addition to project funding up to $2000 and in-kind assistance from Open Education, the Library, and Teaching & Learning Commons, successful applicants for OER Creation Grants will also receive up to $2000 towards any professional development activity of their choosing.
The eligibility, eligible expenses, expectations, in-kind contributions, evaluation criteria, and application process for OER Creation grants are identical to OER Adaptation Grants.

Good morning everyone,
I am delighted to share the Teaching & Learning Commons’ call for applications for a Teaching Fellow in Open Education. Teaching Fellows provide an educational development leadership opportunity for KPU faculty members. They are seconded from their respective faculty appointments through partial time releases. There are two Teaching Fellow positions posted at the moment, one focused on Interculturalization & Internationalization, and the other on Open Education.
The responsibilities of the Open Education Teaching Fellow will include:
1. Supporting the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources (OER) within their program area, with an eventual goal of developing and launching a new Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program.
2. Providing hands-on support for faculty, including for discovering relevant OER, Pressbooks training, and other support as needed.
3. Creating or adapting OER as needed to support the ZTC program development, following the principles outlined in the BC Open Textbook Accessibility Toolkit.
4. Participating actively in open education events at KPU.
5. Communicating and share work with the KPU community.
For more details and the application process, please see: https://www.kpu.ca/teaching-and-learning/teaching-fellow-applications
Submit your application to tlcommons(a)kpu.ca<mailto:tlcommons@kpu.ca> by 8 AM, Friday, October 11, 2019. Applications will be reviewed by the Selection Committee and short-listed applicants will be invited to interview by month’s end.
