Next Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant Application Deadline: Wednesday, January 15

Happy new year everyone! As a reminder, KPU now provides 3 levels of grants to support faculty and staff working with Open Educational Resources (OER): OER Adoption Grants support faculty who wish to adopt OER in place of commercial textbooks and recognize the efforts involved in implementing this change. Successful individual applicants are eligible to receive up to a $500 towards the professional development activity of their choosing. Teams of faculty may receive up to $1,500 towards a group event, project or activity. OER Adaptation Grants support the adaptation (customization/localization/update/remix) of existing open textbooks or other kinds of OER. Projects receive funding up to $2000 (which may be used to hire student assistants or provide honoraria to external collaborators) and in-kind assistance from the Library's Open Publishing Suite (OPUS)<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS>. OER Creation Grants support the creation of new open textbooks or other kinds of OER. Publication of a new open textbook at KPU: Student Engagement Activities for Business Communications

This book, Student Engagement Activities for Business Communications<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/businesscomms/> is co-authored by Melissa Ashman, Arley Cruthers, Sarah Duncan, Karen Inkster Vance, and Panteli Tritchew, all colleagues in our Applied Communications program. The book is a compilation resource for instructors of workplace writing and oral presentations. The activities in this book can add value and energy to the classroom by engaging students in activities that support their learning. Congratulations to Betty Cunnin, Michelle Nakano, and Anita Sangha!

Dear colleagues, I have two wonderful developments to share: First, Betty Cunnin and Michelle Nakano have just received a grant from BCcampus for OER development for the Trades. Their project will focus on the development of an open textbook for students studying a keystone subject for the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship: Identify plants and plant requirements. The newly harmonized Red Seal Occupational Standard establishes skills and knowledge to identify plants and plant requirements across all four program levels, however the proposed OER will focus on Learning Competency F2 for Level 1 and Level 2. And second, Anita Sangha has just been appointed to the Provincial Business Programs Advisory Committee for Open Education at BCcampus. Kudos to Betty, Michelle, and Anita! Congratulations to Melissa Ashman, KPU's 2020 Open Education Research Fellow

Dear colleagues, On behalf of the Open Education Working Group, I am delighted to announce that Melissa Ashman (Applied Communications) has been selected as KPU’s inaugural Open Education Research Fellow. As an author and adapter of open textbooks and early adopter of open pedagogy, Melissa brings a wealth of experience to her new role along with a deep commitment to equitable access to education. The Open Education Research Fellowship will run from January 1-December 31 each year and provides mentorship and support to design and conduct scholarly research on open educational practices. Spring 2020 workshops on Open Pedagogy

Dear colleagues, The following are open pedagogy workshops that will be offered during the Spring 2020 semester: Virtual Open Pedagogy Learning Community (Spring 2020) In partnership with Keene State College<https://www.keene.edu/> in Keene, New Hampshire, we are once again offering an inter-institutional and virtual set of discussions focused on different aspects of Open Pedagogy. The OPLC will meet biweekly during the Spring 2020 semester on Wednesdays from 10-11am Pacific Time (1-2pm Eastern Time) on the following dates: January 29, February 12, February 26, March 11, March 25, and April 8. The OPLC will be co-facilitated by Karen Cangialosi (Professor of Biology, Open Education Faculty Fellow, Keene State College) and Rajiv Jhangiani and will be limited to 10 participants from each institution. Participants are expected to attend all of the sessions. This showcase will feature the efforts of students (from both institutions) who have completed some of these assignments. You will learn how to set up and customize a course blogging site powered by Wordpress. Arley Cruthers joins the Open Education team

New at KPU: Open Education Research Fellowship

Dear colleagues, I am pleased to announce the creation of an Open Education Research Fellowship: https://www.kpu.ca/open/research-fellowship This annual fellowship will run from January 1 to December 31 and is aimed at supporting scholarly research on open educational practices by regular faculty at KPU. This may include investigations into the cost savings, perceptions, outcomes, and use of open educational resources (see the Open Education Group’s COUP framework<https://openedgroup.org/coup>) as well as research on the perceptions and impact of renewable assignments and other forms of open pedagogy. The research approach may be qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods and may require approval by KPU’s Research Ethics Board<https://www.kpu.ca/research/research-ethics>. It is expected that at least one research project will be designed and conducted by the Open Education Research Fellow over the one-year term of the fellowship and that the results of this research will be presented at relevant conferences and prepared for publication. Open access publication is required, whether in open access journals or in an open repository (e.g., pre-print or post-print). The Open Education Research Fellowship is jointly funded by Open Education and the Office of Research Services. KPU launches first zero textbook cost Bachelor's degree in North America

Dear colleagues, Yesterday at an Open Access Week event<https://www.kpu.ca/library/Open_Access> at our Richmond campus (co-hosted with UBC, SFU, BCIT, and Langara) we announced the launch of our seventh Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program<https://www.kpu.ca/news/2019/10/22/kpu-launches-first-zero-textbook-cost-de…> in the form of the Bachelor of Arts Degree in General Studies. This is the first four-year ZTC program in North America and builds on more than 700 unique courses that are now offered as ZTC. As of this semester we have saved KPU students more than $3.1 million in textbook costs. The new program means that an individual student could save more than $5000 over the course of their B.A. There is, of course, an enormous amount of work that goes into developing a large program like this and I am especially grateful to our colleagues in the Library, members of our Open Education Working Group<https://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg>, the Bookstore print-on-demand team, the Office of the Registrar’s Scheduling team, Office of Planning & Accountability staff, and of course the more than 300 faculty across every Faculty and School at the institution who are actively participating in this initiative.
