Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to send a quick note letting you know that we are currently running an open educational resources (OER) working group here at Cap. We are actively looking for new members, so I have included many folks that have used OER in the past. Please feel free to share this email with any others. At this point the group is small, but we are planning to meet monthly to continue to promote OER and advocate for support for instructors interested in incorporating OER.
From now on, Tae Aoyagi <taeaoyagi(a)capilanou.ca> from the CTE will be the main point of communication for the group. If you are willing to attend a monthly meeting, or even just stay on the mailing list, please let Tae know.
Thank you for your time, and have a great semester.

Subject: OER Working Group Welcome Back Meeting
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for your interest in Open Educational Resources at Capilano University. As the interim chair of the OER Working Group, I would like to host our first meeting of the semester on Thursday September 6th 11:30-1:00 in LB 309.
Please feel free to share this invite with anyone on campus that is currently using Open Educational Resources, or is interested. Hopefully at this meeting next week, we will be able to redefine the scope and objectives of the working group. At the last meeting we created the following:
The advantages of using open educational resources (OERs) include:
* Expanded access to learning: Students anywhere in the world can access OERs at any time.
* Scalability: OERs are easy to distribute widely with little or no cost.
* Augmentation of class materials: OERs can supplement commercial textbooks where deficiencies in information are evident.
* Less expense for students: The use of OERs instead of commercial textbooks can substantially reduce the cost of course materials for students.
* Showcasing of innovation and talent: A wide audience may learn of faculty expertise. Potential students and donors may be impressed, and student and faculty recruitment efforts may be enhanced.
* Ties for alumni: OERs provide an excellent way for alumni to stay connected to the institution and continue with a program of lifelong learning.
* Quick circulation and continually improved resources: OERs can be improved and disseminated quickly. Instructors can take an existing OER, adapt it for a class, and make the modified OER available for others to use.
These advantages contribute to the University’s strategic priorities: more students on campus and building our capacity.
The OER Working Group recommends that:
1. The Manager of the Centre for Teaching Excellence be given the responsibility and resources to raise awareness and encourage OER adoption through collaboration with faculty, students, administration, IT and the Library.
2. As part of the new faculty orientation process, new faculty receive an introduction to open educational practices, including OER.
3. New curriculum and program initiatives be encouraged to incorporate open educational practices, such as OER, in collaboration with Academic Initiatives and Planning.
4. Financial incentives be created for faculty to adopt, adapt or create OER. Examples from other institutions:
a. Matching funds (e.g., BCcampus grants)
b. Section release
c. PD funds
See you next week,
Blake

Good Morning Everyone,
I look forward to seeing many of you today. Please note a slight change in the meeting location and time. We will now be meeting at 12:00-1:00 in BR126.
The reason for this change is the president’s BBQ. I would hate to keep anyone from free food, so we will start our meeting a little later in order to give you time to grab some food. Please feel free to bring your lunch to the meeting today. It will be a quick and informal meeting to set a plan for the year.
I look forward to seeing you at noon today.

Dear Faculty and Staff,
BCcampus Open Education is reaching out to all faculty members and staff involved in the teaching and support of anatomy and healthcare post-secondary curricula in B.C. in response to a request from the [ http://www.oeconsortium.org/ | Open Education Consortium ] to identify individuals interested in collaborating on a project that would involve the co-creation of an open anatomical atlas of anatomy images.
Background
Anatomy is a basic discipline for all medical and paramedical fields around the world. Anatomical illustrations are essential for the teaching and learning of anatomy and are universally relevant in all countries. Good quality artist-created anatomical drawings are available in anatomical atlases and textbooks but are mostly copyrighted. There are very few good quality anatomical images available under an open license.
If you think this is a good idea and want to participate in the creation and implementation of an open anatomical atlas, please respond to this email by July 15. A response to this email does not commit you to anything, it merely indicates an interest in this project.
On behalf of all interested parties that reply to this email, and as a member of the Open Education Consortium, BCcampus Open Education will submit a form expressing interest.
Regards,
The BCcampus OpenEd team

Hello Everyone,
We have just published the date (April 16, 2018) for the next two [ https://open.bccampus.ca/pressbooks-training-webinar/ | Pressbooks Training webinars ] . These sessions are open to all B.C. faculty and staff.
In addition to the Introduction session, we will also be offering: Intermediate 1: How to import and export files, and make textbook copies for open textbooks created or revised in Pressbooks. The intermediate session will include Pressbooks updates such as the new cloning feature.
For faculty and staff who do not have experience using Pressbooks, it is strongly recommended that they take the Introduction webinar before the Intermediate. These two webinars are conveniently scheduled so they can be taken on the same day.

Hello Everyone,
See the below opportunity for all Canadian post-secondary faculty.
Open Choice invites Canadian faculty to review OER for their upcoming database
Choice, a publishing unit at the Association of College and Research Libraries, plans to release a new online database of open educational resource (OER) reviews called Open Choice. The new service will feature a significant collection of critical reviews of OER targeted to teaching faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and university staff charged with acquiring digital tools for instruction (IT, instructional technologies, etc.).
We are looking for active teaching faculty who be interested in reviewing open educational materials for Open Choice. The reviews are more substantive, averaging 2,000-2,500 words, and use a structured review rubric. The rubric provides consistency in reviews and makes them easier to write. All reviews go through a formal copyediting process. We are able to provide a honorarium of $200 for each review.
If you are interested in reviewing, or have questions about Open Choice or the reviewing process, please email Melissa Karp at [ mailto:mkarp@ala-choice.org | mkarp(a)ala-choice.org ] .
Regards,
Lauri
