Hi there fellow Open Educators,
Attached is an infographic that you can use/modify if you are using an OpenTextbook in your class. There was a discussion on the CanadaOer group about the importance of students knowing that they are using an open textbook and why it is important. Then Christina from Montana State U Library created and shared this infographic which they use to "educate" their students.
I thought I would share :)
Cheers,
Rosario

Subject: RE: Practical "How to use this OER" info for students with new textbook?
I agree with Jessica, that it is important for students to know the difference. I also found that the more they know, the bigger advocates for OER outreach to faculty they become. I started putting this infographic up in all of my class shells as well as in the syllabus packet. It has sparked some great conversations with students over the years.

Hello fellow open educators,
Open Education Week wrapped up this past Friday and over the week there were many events in the Lower Mainland that highlighted the work that many institutions are doing in the open in BC. I hope some of you managed to take the time to attend at least 1 or 2 events. BCIT kicked off the week with an "OER for the Trades" discussion with the participation of Amanda Coolidge from BCcampus, Bonnie Johnston from the Learning and Teaching Centre, Tim Carson, from Piping Trades, Chad Flinn from Electrical Trades and a guest visitor from Vancouver Island University, Sally Vinden. There were some great points that were addressed and many lessons learned that were shared.
As the week was underway, the Open Education Working Group released the BCIT Open Education Report which you can see attached. It looks at the Open Initiatives and projects that happened at BCIT over the last year. It was a busy year with lots of activity in Open Education and we hope the momentum carries on into 2019!
Have a great weekend everyone! and thanks to all of you who choose to work in the "Open"!
Rosario
Hi there fellow Open Educators at BCIT!
As some of you may already know... Open Education Week<https://www.openeducationweek.org/> is coming up at the beginning of March: March 4 to 8, and there are lots of events going on at most of the post-secondary institutions in the Lower Mainland to generate awareness, promote engagement and collaboration. In fact, BCIT is co-hosting an all day event on March 6, at KPU in Richmond titled Open in Action<https://www.openeducationweek.org/events/open-in-action-2019>. (registration is free)
To kick start the celebrations around Open Education Week, BCIT is also hosting a Round Table discussion on March 4, at the Library, Burnaby campus, titled OER for the Trades (see attached poster with information) Promises to be a very engaging discussion, with participation from BCcampus, BCIT and VIU. So, come hear from your fellow instructors, as well as from other institutions, about perspectives on Open Education Resources for the Trades. This Roundtable also features the participation of the LTC's own Bonnie Johnston, who will be speaking about her experiences with the Trades Harmonization project.
Hope to see some of you there! And please promote this event widely through your own networks.
Have a great long weekend.
