Hello all,
Our next meeting is scheduled for February 22 at 1pm via Zoom<https://langara.zoom.us/j/66440098209?pwd=ZlhDZzV4aHNHRTIxdkt1NXVXZXkxUT09> (full invite below). I'll circulate the agenda shortly thereafter.
I've also attached the draft minutes from our January 18 meeting for you to review. As always, thanks to Donna for recording!

For the past several years UBC Library, the First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program, and event sponsors (see below) have organized the Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters>. This edit-a-thon event, inspired by Daniel Heath Justice’s<https://fnis.arts.ubc.ca/persons/daniel-justice/> Twitter campaign of the same name, seeks to bring community editors together to work on editing Wikipedia entries for Indigenous authors in an attempt to tackle the systemic bias of Wikipedia while also trying to raise the profile of Indigenous writers.
Instead of the annual in-person event this year the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and Wikipedia-related activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2021. The events include:
* Author readings <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> by Smokii Sumac, Richard Van Camp, Tenille Campbell, Marilyn Dumont and more
* Self-paced Weekly Wikipedia Challenges <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/activities> with prize draws
* Wikipedia training and drop-in Zoom sessions<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events>
* <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> A panel discussion<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> from the UBC Vancouver Public Humanities Hub on Wikipedia as public scholarship
* And a social media campaign on Twitter<https://twitter.com/HIW_Wiki>
These events and activities are free and open to anyone to participate. Please join us at our kickoff event and reading with Smokii Sumac on February 24th at 7:00pm PST, and learn more about the other events we have planned! You can also read more at the HIW home page<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/>, and at the HIW Wikipedia Meetup Page<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters/U…>.
We would also appreciate your support of the event by helping to promote it through your listservs, social media accounts, and other spaces to help raise awareness of Indigenous literature and engage in open community knowledge creation.
The event team has developed a number of social media assets in a variety of sizes for ease of sharing. The assets can be downloaded here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JjUP3kuTsogRBLXv4HF7c281MXLu0x_y?us…
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and thank you in advance for any support you can give in making this event a success. Thank you to event sponsors, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies<https://cis.arts.ubc.ca/>, Iron Dog Books<https://irondogbooks.com/>, BCcampus<https://bccampus.ca/>, and the UBC Bookstore<https://bookstore.ubc.ca/>.

Hello all,
In follow up to the discussion regarding copyright advocacy at our last meeting, I'm attaching the letter (in French and English) authored by CFLA-FCAB and CARL-ABRC. Annette DeFaveri circulated it on the BCLA listserv on Dec 1, 2020 on behalf of Rebecca Raven, Executive Director CFLA-FCAB, with the following note:
"The Copyright Committee of CFLA-FCAB has been busy advocating with our federal government to modernize and improve access to government information. A recent letter regarding Crown Copyright shared with Cabinet Ministers and MPs (attached) has had a positive response and we are encouraged by the number of follow up conversations we had scheduled as a result of the communique. We wanted to give you a heads up that next steps for the Committee include communication with provincial governments to inform and gain support. Member associations will be copied on the relevant letters for their jurisdictions."
I'll keep you posted on future correspondence with CPSLD about this.
Thanks,
Lindsay

Good morning all,
At our last BCOEL steering committee meeting, I briefly shared about a new project I'll be working on to develop a strategy for SFU Library to increase support for OER adoptions and advance open education more broadly on campus.
As part of this project work, I've been tasked with checking in with other institutions (locally and perhaps more broadly) for examples of open education strategy in action. So I would be very grateful indeed for any examples you might be able to share of publicly available documents that articulate plans, goals, visions, statements and/or policies that guide open education strategy at your Library and campus. I do know that Kwantlen has an exemplary "Open Education Strategic Plan 2018-2023<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/openeducation/>" -- and Caroline and Karen, I would love to chat with you further about this sometime if you're willing and able :-)
As I think this may be a topic of interest to others here as well, feel free to reply to our list here with any examples -- or to share with me directly if you feel more comfortable that way. I'm also happy to answer questions about this SFU Library project work any time!
Thanks so much, Hope

Hello again all,
Thanks to everyone who was able to pop onto our call today! Thanks also to Urooj for prompting us to start thinking about a 2021 Open Education Week event - March will be here before we know it.
Mia kindly reiterated her willingness to serve as the team lead for the event. I looked back at the BCOEL 2020/21 Priority Sign-Up Sheet<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_CzR2moJJRJNIP7SRpeK5945S4ExVnlW5rdvM5H…> and a number of people put their name forward to assist. However, I realize that people's capacity may have changed since signing up, so feel free to delete or add your name to the Open Ed Week Event section of the Google Doc before end-of-day on November 27. After which, Mia, could I ask you to arrange a planning team meeting? (I think this could be in early January if it proves too difficult to connect in December.)
Many thanks,
Lindsay
