Hello all,
Wow, talk about going out with a bang - for some reason, I thought our next BCOEL meeting was scheduled for next week, but I just checked my Outlook calendar and it's today at 1pm(!) Hence the absence of a call for agenda items. My sincere apologies for the oversight.
If you're able to join us at 1pm, here is the link to the Zoom meeting<https://langara.zoom.us/j/67255132006?pwd=Q2w2cDRxS0syZzExL2NCZm1SVjBrZz09>.
I've attached the draft agenda. Please feel free to add any additional items at the start of the meeting or incorporate them into the roundtable discussion.
Please also find the minutes for our May meeting attached for your review. As always, thanks to Donna for recording these!
Hope to see you all soon,
Lindsay

Dear BCOEL Steering Committee,
Yesterday, the bcoel.ca website was moved to a new server as part of a larger network migration at SFU. (BCcampus websites are hosted by SFU.) Initial testing shows that the BCOEL website is working as expected.
If you or any of your members or users have a problem with the website, please report it to BCcampus IT Support at support(a)bccampus.ca.
Thanks,
Lauri

Hi all,
Our next meeting is scheduled for next Monday (May 17) from 1pm-2pm via Zoom<https://langara.zoom.us/j/67266292613?pwd=RTBPL2FzWExIYlhua0ZpZkxSck45UT09>. Please feel free to send me agenda items by noon on Friday, May 14th.
I've attached the draft minutes from our April meeting for you to review. Thank you for preparing these, Donna!
Also, just a quick reminder to email me off list (ltripp(a)langara.ca) if you're interested in taking on the Chair Elect role next year (term commencing September 2021). Darcye has put her name forward (thanks, Darcye!), but we can hold an election if more than one person expresses interest.
All the best,
Lindsay

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone had advice on transition mathematical graphs/images from JPGs/PNGS to accessible formats in Pressbooks. For example here: https://www.ohio.edu/mechanical/thermo/Intro/Chapt.1_6/Chapter3a.html
Is there a program integration you use for these complex images?
Best,
Erin

Dear BCOEL community,
Please join us on Thursday, May 27 from 11am-12pm for a conversation about how B.C. colleges and universities are supporting Pressbooks. Speakers from three post-secondary institutions (BCIT, Kwantlen, and UBC) will share some of the successes and challenges they've experienced. We'll leave ample time for Q&A/casual discussion.
Pressbooks is an open source book production platform based on WordPress. Our open education partner, BCcampus, hosts an instance of Pressbooks and offers staff and educators from post-secondary institutions in B.C. and the Yukon a free account<https://pressbooks.bccampus.ca/>.
This is an informal session for information sharing and no registration is required (Zoom details provided below). We hope to see many of you there!
Many thanks,
Lindsay Tripp

Hi everyone,
I have a some quick question about PD. Please don’t spend too much time on your responses – I just want to know what you do and think about professional development around open education
What do you do for your PD?
What would you recommend for PD (and would it be broken down to “new comers” vs. librarians who have been working in this field for a number of years)?
Where, if any, is the line between PD and your job in open education?
I will appreciate all responses, no matter how brief.
Thanks,
Debra
P.S. See you virtually at Cascadia

Hi all,
A colleague put me in touch yesterday with a CAUT representative seeking an interview for a short feature article about "open access and open educational resources, and in particular how the pandemic and remote learning have impacted the debate around these and related issues, including academic freedom." I'm wondering if anyone else from our BCOEL steering committee might be interested and available to join me for this brief interview (20-30 min. via Zoom) this week, or possibly early next week? If so, let me know - and thanks for considering!
Much appreciated, Hope

Hello all,
Nice to see many of you at today's meeting 🙂 As I mentioned, Darcye has expressed interest in the Chair-Elect position. (Thanks, Darcye!) I welcome any other expressions of interest between now and our May 17th meeting (please email me off-list at ltripp(a)langara.ca.) If more than one person is interested, I can arrange a vote. If not, Darcye will be appointed by acclamation.
The Chair-Elect position is a two-year commitment (one year as Chair-Elect and one year as Chair). The term follows the academic year (September 1 to August 31). The Chair-Elect's primary duties are recording minutes and running meetings in the Chair's absence -- as Donna had to do today when I joined our call late (THANK YOU!) 😮
Thanks!
