Hello,
FYI - the following book looks very interesting:
The Rebus Community<http://rebus.community/> has developed a new resource to support those interested in running an open textbook project in their classroom. The new collaboratively-created Guide to Making Open Textbooks With Students<https://press.rebus.community/makingopentextbookswithstudents/> contains project ideas, case studies, resources, sample assignments and more. You can learn more about the project here<https://about.rebus.community/2017/08/new-resource-from-the-rebus-community…>.

Greetings Open Education Colleagues:
In early 2017, the Creative Commons Global Network (CCGN) completed a consultation process of renewing and reorganizing itself to support a strong and growing global movement. The year-long process resulted in the CCGN [ https://creativecommons.org/about/global-affiliate-network/network-strategy/ | Global Network Strategy ] . Part of the new strategy is to establish defined areas of focus, or “platforms,” which will drive CC’s global activities. Hi BCOEL!
I am wondering if any of you would be interested in participating in a webinar (hosted by BCcampus) to discuss the background, implications, ruling of the following Access Copyright vs. York case. For background: York University opted out of the Access Copyright agreement a few years ago and decided to try to police it on their own within their university and push the new fair use clause of the Canadian Copyright act. Access Copyright sued them and appears they have won the case.

Let me know if you are interested and available and we can set something up for next week or the week after.
I think this important for us to talk about to our community.
Thanks
Amanda

The Failure of Access: Rethinking Open Education
March 28 2017, 5:30pm-8:30pm
Room 1430, Harbour Centre (SFU Vancouver)
515 W Hastings St, Vancouver
This special event is presented in collaboration with SFU Library, UBC Library, BCcampus, and the Public Knowledge Project as part of Open Education Week 2017
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. To register visit: [ http://www.lib.sfu.ca/about/branches-depts/rc/32099 | http://www.lib.sfu.ca/about/branches-depts/rc/32099 ]
The use of open re-use licenses and Internet technologies have long promised to reduce barriers to education by making it more distributed, equitable, and open. Indeed, the promise of open education can trace its roots to the the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations 1948, which states “everyone has a right to education.” There is little formal evidence, however, that open education has an impact on increasing access to learning or making education more equitable.
This event will explore the goals, failures, and successes of open education. Join us in exploring such questions as: is open education succeeding in being a transformative movement that makes learning more accessible? What are the criteria and successes that should be used to measure if the open education movement is a success? What more needs to be done?
Our discussion will be led by keynote speaker Dr. Ishan Abeywardena (Advisor - Open Education Resources) from the [ https://www.col.org/ | Commonwealth of Learning ] and panelists from [ https://www.sfu.ca/ | SFU ] , [ https://www.ubc.ca/ | UBC ] , [ http://caperbc.ca/ | CAPER-BC ] , and [ https://sparcopen.org/ | SPARC ] .

Hi Friends
We have decided to wait a couple of weeks on doing the webinar as we are curious to see how other universities and institutions also react to the case. As well we are aware that there may be implications to your institutions/universities should you speak out about this now, vs. at a later date.
I do really want to do this webinar, so will be in touch in a couple of weeks as more information trickles in re: Access and York, etc.
Thanks for the understanding
Amanda
