The following are open pedagogy workshops that will be offered during the Spring 2020
semester:
Virtual Open Pedagogy Learning Community (Spring 2020)
In partnership with Keene State College<https://www.keene.edu/> in Keene, New
Hampshire, we are once again offering an inter-institutional and virtual set of
discussions focused on different aspects of Open Pedagogy. The OPLC will meet biweekly
during the Spring 2020 semester on Wednesdays from 10-11am Pacific Time (1-2pm Eastern
Time) on the following dates: January 29, February 12, February 26, March 11, March 25,
and April 8. The OPLC will be co-facilitated by Karen Cangialosi (Professor of Biology,
Open Education Faculty Fellow, Keene State College) and Rajiv Jhangiani and will be
limited to 10 participants from each institution. Participants are expected to attend all
of the sessions.

Introduction to Open Pedagogy
Open Pedagogy may be understood as an access-oriented commitment to learner-driven
education and as a process of designing architectures and using tools for learning that
enable students to shape the public knowledge commons of which they are a part. In
practice, open pedagogy can involve creating, adapting, or updating open educational
resources with students, building course policies, outcomes, assignments, rubrics, and
schedules of work collaboratively with students, or facilitating student-created and
student-controlled learning environments. This session (co-facilitated with Arley Cruthers
and Andrea Niosi) will introduce principles of open pedagogy, showcase examples of
innovative applications at KPU, and equip you with resources and mentorship to support
further experimentation.

The Power of Collaborative Digital Annotation: Using Hypothes.is for Teaching &
Learning
Hypothes.is (https://hypothes.is/) is an open source plugin for your browser that makes it
possible to easily annotate any webpage, online document, or open textbook. This hands-on
workshop will introduce you to this powerful tool, showcase examples of its use in higher
education, and equip you to effectively use Hypothes.is for teaching and learning, such as
by having your students annotate assigned readings.

UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship: Student Showcase
During the summer of 2019, six KPU faculty worked with colleagues at Montgomery
College<https://www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship> (Maryland, USA) to
collaboratively design renewable assignments that focus on the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals. This showcase will feature the efforts of students (from both
institutions) who have completed some of these assignments. KPU's open pedagogy
faculty fellows will also speak to their motivations and experiences. This showcase offers
an excellent opportunity for those considering applying for the 2020 open pedagogy
fellowship program to learn more.

Blogging, Portfolios, and more! Getting Started with Wordpress
Wordpress is an open-source platform that powers a quarter of all websites. It is
especially popular as a platform for blogging, including by students as part of their
coursework. This workshop (co-facilitated with Robin Leung) will introduce you to
Wordpress and its potential applications within education, with a particular focus on its
use for student blogging assignments and e-portfolios. You will learn how to set up and
customize a course blogging site powered by Wordpress. You will also learn about SPLOTs,
privacy-conscious tools which makes student blogging within Wordpress easy and accessible;

In addition to these workshops, there will be a special event on Wednesday, March 4 at KPU
