The team at Babson Survey Research Group is out today with a report on the use of OER in higher education. The study is based on responses of over 2,700 faculty and there are a number of helpful findings. Key Findings Include:
* Faculty awareness of OER has increased, with 29 percent of faculty reporting that they were “Aware” or “Very Aware” of open educational resources, up from 25 percent last year and 20 percent the year before.

Large enrollment introductory undergraduate courses have adopted openly licensed OpenStax College textbooks at a rate (16.5 percent) equivalent to that of commercial publication adoption.

Business math is the study of mathematics required by the field of business. This textbook covers taxes, gross earnings, product prices, and currency exchange; loans, lines of credit, mortgages, leases, savings bonds, and other financial tools. It also discusses how to execute smart monetary decisions both personally and for their business.
There are two versions for this book: The "Basic Edition" and the "Premium Edition." While they cover the same content, the Premium Edition includes additional features such as Excel integration, Excel templates, Excel screenshots, along with lots of extra visuals and graphics to help student wrap their heads around the numbers, procedures, and concepts that they work with. The Basic Edition does not include Excel and those extra visuals and graphics in order to streamline the book.

KPU unveils sweet suite of courses with no-cost textbooks
Metro Vancouver, B.C. – Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) are about to save thousands of dollars on their education, thanks to dozens of courses that don’t require expensive, commercial textbooks.
Launched Nov. 1, the courses are part of KPU’s Zed Cred program, which is the first of its kind in Canada. The "Z" in Zed Cred refers to zero textbook costs and the “Cred” refers to an entire degree program, in this case KPU’s certificate of arts credential.
“Even a single textbook can cost well over $100, which means a student can spend thousands of dollars on textbooks on top of the cost of tuition during their post-secondary career,” said Dr. Rajiv Jhangiani, a university teaching fellow in open studies and psychology instructor.
KPU has launched close to 50 courses in the Faculty of Arts that use either free open textbooks or free library materials that are available online.
Third-year KPU psychology student Bethany Borkowski is already planning to take three Zed Cred courses in counselling psychology, sociology, and journalism. Borkowski estimates she’s spent about $700 on textbooks to date, despite buying mostly old and used editions.
“The high cost of textbooks limits university learning to those who have accessibility and the financial resources available to cover additional costs,” says Borkowski. “I know many people who do not buy textbooks because of the cost, and they miss out on valuable information for a course.”
In fact, Jhangiani recently published his research showing that 54 per cent of BC post-secondary students do not purchase at least one of their required course textbooks because of cost.
The introduction of Zed Cred means Borkowski will no longer have to guess what page an instructor is referring to due to differences in their respective textbook editions, she’ll have access to her materials anywhere, and she won’t have to carry any heavy tomes around with her.
Borkowski says open educational resources also make courses much more engaging.
“Instead of just reading from a textbook, we had access to more resources online through hyperlinks in the text and suggested readings from the instructor.”
KPU’s Zed Cred was made possible thanks to a $35,000 grant from BCcampus to adopt and adapt pre-existing free online open education resources as well as create new ones.
KPU also received an Open Education Resource Grant, which matches BCcampus funding with KPU funding for creating new open textbooks, redesigning existing resources, and providing workshops, training and other support services.
KPU is already the leading institutional adopter of open textbooks in B.C.

O ften calculus is taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas devoid of its connection to applications. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.
A two-volume set for an introductory calculus course has also been added, written by faculty authors at the Grand Valley State University in Michigan

Coast Capital Savings Library at KPU is excited to celebrate Open Access Week by hosting a series of workshops that enables participants to engage with the resources and tools open research has to offer.
We've lined up 4 workshops, some offered at 3 different time slots, in hopes that you can partake. Registration is now open!!!
1. CREATE AND ADAPT: Make Web Ready Books Using Pressbooks:
A popular web platform that is used to create or adapt open textbooks. Learn how to use the BCcampus hosted version to transform your documents into web ready books! Computers are provided for KPU employees, but you should have access to an online document that you are interested in converting to a web based book. 2. PUBLISH AND EDUCATE: Publish your own journal using Open Journal System (OJS):

The 10th annual Open Access Week takes place internationally October 23-29. Open Access Week is "a global, community-driven week of action to open up access to research" and invites participants to focus on what open access enables (OAW website<http://www.openaccessweek.org/>).
