Join us for the Cascadia Open Education Summit, formerly known as the BC Open Textbook Summit, in beautiful Vancouver, B.C. on April 17 & 18, 2019 at SFU Harbour Centre. This event is co-hosted with our regional friends; Lumen Learning, Open Oregon Educational Resources, and the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.
This event is for new and experienced OER advocates offering the opportunity to learn and share effective practices in awareness building, implementation, collaboration, strategy, and research.
Theme: Scaling New Heights with Open Education.
Example topics include:
* What are the current challenges and opportunities for open education? Do you have creative solutions for how to take them on?
* How is the ecosystem around OER evolving, and what are the implications for this evolution?
* As OER enters mainstream curriculum, what are the implications for institutions? Faculty? Libraries? Students? Other stakeholders?
Event details:
* Day 1 will include 2 keynotes and conference proceedings with presentations, panel presentations, and table talks.
* Day 2 is our Day of Action Focused OER Workshops. A series of workshops will be presented (2 hours each) and is intended for people looking for support in achieving the next step in their OER work or initiative.

The application form is brief and the turnaround time for a decision rapid. As you may know, KPU has offered small OER grants for the past two years to those interested in creating, adapting, and adopting OERs. These grants are jointly funded by BCcampus and the Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic and thus far have been used to support OER projects in Academic & Career Preparation, Languages & Cultures, Sociology, Asian Studies, English Language Studies, and the Learning Centres.
I am writing to inform you that the Open Education Working Group has recently revised the application process for these grants from rolling applications to 1 application deadline per semester (May 1, September 1, and January 15). BCcampus is looking for instructors to review existing open textbooks in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/>.
An honorarium of $250 will be paid to eligible and qualified individuals who complete, submit, and permit the open publication of their review for a textbook in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/>. All reviews must be approved by BCcampus Open Education before they are posted and payment is made to the reviewer.
Answers provided in completed reviews must be accurate, comprehensive, constructive, and concise; this is required so that the review is useful to those evaluating the targeted open textbook. (See “Completed Review: Approval and Payment” below.)
Each approved and completed review will be published by the reviewed textbook in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/> under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence<https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/>. The copyright for each review is owned by the reviewer.

Review and Selection Process
* Faculty who would like to review a textbook should be teaching in the subject area for the selected text.
* Reviewers should be teaching at a post-secondary institution in either British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, or the Yukon.
* Reviewers are willing to consider the adoption of the reviewed open textbook, providing its quality and contents are appropriate for their course.
Please note that in order to encourage a diversity of voices in the reviews, BCcampus limits the number of reviews per person to one.

Earlier this year, we organized KPU's first interdisciplinary Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on Open Pedagogy<https://www.kpu.ca/open/pedagogy>. Meeting over the Spring semester, the group explored a variety of open educational practices that go far beyond open textbooks and critically examined ways in which students and faculty can use open resources, open licensing, and open tools to work together to design powerful and authentic learning experiences.
This Fall will mark the launch of our second FLC cohort. The group will read a single article and meet for a virtual discussion twice a month on Fridays from 9-10am (beginning on September 21). The schedule of meetings and topics is as follows:
