Subject: [Canadaoer] Criminology - Call for Authors
CAUTION: This email originated from outside of BCIT. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe.
Dear all,
I’m writing on behalf of faculty member Shereen Hassan at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia. Dr. Hassan is looking for a contributor to author a chapter in a much-anticipated, Canada-focused, Introduction to Criminology openly-licensed textbook. The chapter that requires an author is:
1. Media and Crime
2.
Please see Dr. Hassan’s letter below and circulate this Call for Authors widely. This is a paid opportunity and would come with a $500 honorarium.
If interested, or you would like more please reach out to Dr. Shereen Hassan at shereen.hassan(a)kpu.ca<mailto:shereen.hassan@kpu.ca> by Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
--
I hope that this email finds you well. My name is Dr. Shereen Hassan and I am an SFU criminology alumni. I completed my PhD under the supervision of Dr. Simon Verdun-Jones in 2010. I am now a faculty member at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in the Criminology department and have been here for almost 17 years.
I am reaching out about an opportunity to contribute to an Open Education Resource for the Introduction to Criminology course. This text will be the first of its kind in Canadian Criminology and is unique as it seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history and content in a way that Criminology texts to date have failed to do. There are authors from several universities, including Simon Fraser University, the University of the Fraser Valley, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, the University of Winnipeg, as well as other institutions in B.C. and elsewhere, so it's quite a collaborative effort!
I am still looking for authors in the area of Media and Crime.
We are flexible on deadlines, and we are hoping to have a draft by the end of summer. This text is an introductory text, so the idea here is to provide a brief overview, but to also address how theories and principles in this area of research relate to Indigenous principles, Indigenous peoples, and/or Indigenous issues in some way, wherever possible. We have asked authors to keep the chapters short (approximately 4000 words) or as close to that as possible.
It would be a wonderful honour to have you contribute to this important project.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
All the best,
Shereen Hassan, PhD

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus recently received notice of an opportunity to collaborate with Wiki Education in the Fall 2021 term. Below is the modified text from a message that we received about this opportunity.
The deadline to run a Wikipedia assignment in Fall 2021 is rapidly approaching! To run a Wikipedia assignment this Fall, submit your application by June 20. Wiki Education's support is fully funded, and there are no fees to run a Wikipedia assignment.
The reasons to run a Wikipedia assignment are myriad, but here are some reflections that capture the essence of the project:
"Although many students admitted they had first felt intimidated by the thought of their work being ‘out there’ on the internet, they all commented on the huge sense of achievement they felt seeing their articles published on Wikipedia at the end of semester and how contributing to global knowledge was incredibly fulfilling."
—Professor Victoria Austin, University of Winnipeg
"One of the things I loved about this project was the idea of being able to improve something on a public platform and offer substantive research that could be helpful to someone who might not have access to the same resources we are so lucky to have as students at the University of Michigan."
—Aja Brandmeier, Student, University of Michigan
To apply for a spot in the program, follow these steps:
1. Create an account at dashboard.wikiedu.org<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdashboard…>.
2. Go through Wiki Education's Orientation for New Instructors<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdashboard…>. You'll be prompted to do this once you create an account.
3. After you complete the orientation, you'll be asked to launch the Assignment Design Wizard. Go through the wizard to create your course page. Your course page will be the central hub for your Wikipedia assignment, and it's how you receive support from Wiki Education. When you're ready, submit the course page, and your application will be complete!
We will notify you by July 16 if we are able to offer you a spot for the Fall 2021 term. Applications submitted after June 20 will only be considered if space allows.
For more information, contact Helaine Blumenthal at helaine(a)wikiedu.org<mailto:helaine@wikiedu.org>.

This text will be the first of its kind in Canadian Criminology and is unique as it seeks to incorporate Indigenous knowledge, history and content in a way that Criminology texts to date have failed to do. Dr. Gail Anderson has contributed in the area of biological explanations of crime, and Dr. Zachary Rowan and Michaela McGuire have co-authored a chapter on learning theories. There are authors from several other universities in B.C. and elsewhere, so it's quite a collaborative effort!
I am still looking for authors in the area of (1) Environmental Criminology and (2) Measuring Crime and Methods. For environmental Criminology, we were hoping this chapter could begin with a discussion of the classical school and from that, stem into rational choice/choice theories to include also routine activities and other theories falling under this umbrella. The methods chapter should cover UCR, GSS and self-report surveys. It will also be necessary to introduce the idea of statistics, surveys, etc., as one method of measuring crime, but also talk about how qualitative inquiry is important for measuring things like perceptions of crime, severity, etc. A basic introduction to the various methods that criminologists use could be weaved into this chapter. Key methods concepts briefly defined here would include: empirical, qualitative and quantitative, sampling, reliability, validity, deductive and inductive, correlation, case studies and experiments. A detailed discussion of Indigenous methodologies, including but not limited to oral history, would be instrumental, as well as a contextual background for students to better understand the statistics which demonstrate the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in crime statistics.
We are flexible on deadlines, and we are hoping to have a draft by the end of summer. This text is an introductory text, so the idea here is to provide a brief overview, but to also address this theoretical framework's application to Indigenous principles, Indigenous peoples, Indigenous issues in some way, wherever possible. We have asked authors to keep the chapters short (approximately 4000 words) or as close to that as possible.
It would be a wonderful honour to have you contribute to this important project.

Hello Rosario,
I realize this is a short notice, but want to share that educators from Trent University and eCampusOntario will be our Hypothes.is "Liquid Margins" tomorrow!
And, you are invited to this free show as we will be discussing how they've been making student reading active, visible, and social using collaborative annotation. The show starts at 12 Noon EST/9AM PST.
If you are interested here is a link to RSVP<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhypothes-…>. Please share with your colleagues!
Also, here is a quick background, Hypothes.is<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhypothes-…> is a tool for social annotation that's easy to add to any learning management system.
· Teachers can enable social annotation on specific readings
· Students do not need to install anything, or sign up for or log in to separate accounts
· Teachers can grade annotations with gradebook integration
Please join the show and learn more.
Kind regards,
Tim

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus, in partnership with Vretta<https://www.vretta.com/ordering.html> and the Manitoba Open Textbook Initiative<https://openedmb.ca/>, is surveying Canadian post-secondary institutions about their knowledge about/adoption of/suggested improvements to the distribution of OpenStax’s hardbound books in Canada<https://bccampus.ca/2021/02/23/hard-back-openstax-books-come-to-canada/>, and the usage of and need for printed open textbooks in general. Faculty, librarians, bookstore staff, and students are invited to participate in the Canadian Distribution of OpenStax hardcover textbooks<https://sfu-bccampus.cmail20.com/t/d-l-qcjdty-ehldhkki-jl/> survey. All responses are anonymous. Final results will be shared out later this year.

Dear colleagues,
Registration for the KPU Open Education Research Institute 2021 is now open. See below and the attached PDF for more information about this exciting opportunity for new and emerging open education researchers.
Dates: Monday, May 3 | Wednesday, May 5 | Friday, May 7
Time: 9am – 12pm (PST)
Program Description: As open education initiatives mature, it is imperative to investigate their impacts whether it be to advocate for institutional support or to iterate, innovate and further advance the goal of equitable access. For this reason, open education research is becoming an important facet within a healthy and thriving open ecosystem. This three-day Open Education Research Institute (OERI) provides an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skillset while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will
* receive an overview of existing research on open educational practices, including a special focus on research conducted in or by researchers in British Columbia.
* learn about different theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in open education
* receive guidance on practical issues such as preparing applications for ethical review of their research projects and publishing their work in open access journals or repositories
* work in affinity groups to draft and revise their research questions and be paired with an experienced researcher, who will serve as their mentor for the following year.
The OERI is jointly funded by KPU's Office of Open Education and BCcampus. While there will be no cost to register for the event, registration is required for planning and logistics.
To maintain a fruitful experience for participants, registration is limited. To cultivate a research community here is BC, priority will be given to registrants at BC institutions.
For more information and to register, please visit: https://www.kpu.ca/open/oeri
The full program will be published in April 2021.
For questions, please contact Rajiv Jhangiani and Urooj Nizami at open(a)kpu.ca.
