Festival of Learning and Open Education: Call for Proposals now open

Open Access Week: October 23 - 29, 2017

Hi there folks, Open Access Week is coming up next week, and I would like to encourage you to participate in as many events as possible. Open Access Week is a global event that celebrates and generates awareness about open access: "Open Access Week, a global event now entering its eighth year, is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access, to share what they've learned with colleagues, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research.<http://www.openaccessweek.org/page/about> There are many events happening around the world<http://www.openaccessweek.org/events> to celebrate Open Access, and there are also a number of local events happening here in Vancouver. Generally, these events are free and open to everyone. You can see a list of the local events on the BCcampus calendar<https://bccampus.ca/calendar/>. This year, BCIT is proud to partner with UBC and SFU to celebrate Open Access. Together, BCIT, SFU and UBC are bringing to you a conversation about tensions and risks in open scholarship. An option to purchase print-on-demand copies through SFU's Document Solutions for Canadian faculty and students is available for all textbooks. Textbooks and supplementary resources that were created in B.C. are labelled as "Made in British Columbia". Other Canadian based materials are also marked. Published by the Justice Institute of BC and written by Rod Gehl (JIBC) and Darryl Plecas (University of the Fraser Valley), t he goal of this textbook is to assist the reader in forming their own structured mental map of investigative thinking practices. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates. Open Scholarship Day and Open Science Framework (OSF) workshop in UBC Vancouver - September 29, 2017

Hello everyone, I thought some of you might be interested in this event coming up next week: Open practices are empowering faculty, staff and students in Canada to transform the way they create, manage and share their research and educational efforts. Join us on September 29, 2017 for a full day of hands-on workshops<http://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/open-scholarship-in-practice/> exploring the practice of open scholarship including an afternoon session hosted by the Center for Open Science about the many simple actions researchers can take to increase the efficiency and reproducibility of their work with the Open Science Framework platform<https://osf.io/>. The Open Science Framework (OSF) is an open source web application that supports the research workflow, enabling scientists to collaborate and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their research by making it much easier (in fact, virtually automatic) for researchers to keep track of what they've done, and why. This framework, which does not require any specialized knowledge of programming, was used to work on an important study<https://www.nature.com/news/over-half-of-psychology-studies-fail-reproducib…> of the reproducibility of psychology research. Additional workshops will explore topics ranging from new tools for open data analysis and scientific computation to innovative pedagogies that become possible when students and faculty members become co-creators engaged in meaningful, generative knowledge creation.
