Community ] is looking for contributors to a new open textbook on Introduction to Philosophy.
The book is targeted at 100-level college courses, and is being put together by Christina Hendricks of the University of British Columbia, with the support of The Rebus Community, a non-profit initiative, developing new collaborative models for publishing free/open textbooks and other academic works.
We are seeking faculty interested in contributing to the book. Particularly, we are looking for:

We are looking for people with a PhD in philosophy, ideally with teaching experience at the first-year level. PhD students in philosophy may also be considered as authors, or can contribute in other ways to the book.
Interested faculty or PhD students can sign-up using the links above . Each chapter will be around 3000 words. Alternatively, if you would like to write about a section that is not listed, we can discuss the possibility of additions.

The Rebus Community is looking for forward-thinking academics, students, and citizens to come help us reimagine publishing and its impacts on education.
We are currently working towards releasing the first few parts of the textbook, which will cover core concepts in Western philosophy and other traditions, with faculty joining us from institutions across North America, Africa, and Europe. The book will be freely available to students and faculty and openly licensed to enable reuse.

We encourage all of our open education and other higher ed colleagues from everywhere to submit a proposal. There will be three topic areas: Open Education , Educational Technology, and Teaching & Learning. (This event is offered in place of the Open Textbook Summit for 2018.)
Festival of Learning 2018 will take place May 28-20, 2018 in beautiful downtown Vancouver. Registration opens on February 1. Join 500 participants in an inclusive space designed to enable cross-pollination between educators and administration, thought leaders and faculty. No matter your role in post-secondary education, we want you to feel comfortable sharing your own experiences – successes as well as challenges.

CRIMINOLOGY

Published by the Justice Institute of BC and written by Rod Gehl (JIBC) and Darryl Plecas (University of the Fraser Valley), t he goal of this textbook is to assist the reader in forming their own structured mental map of investigative thinking practices.
GEOGRAPHY

This recent addition, by Caitlin Finlayson from the University of Mary Washington, was evaluated by subject matter experts in B.C.
MATH - Calculus

O ften calculus is taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas devoid of its connection to applications. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.
A two-volume set for an introductory calculus course has also been added, written by faculty authors at the Grand Valley State University in Michigan

Two new textbooks on Spanish literature (and written in Spanish) are now available.

The focus is on canonical authors with an attempt to include voices that have been marginalized. Julie Ward, assistant professor of 20th and 21st-century Latin American literature at the University of Oklahoma, is the editor.

This textbook is by Robert Sanders, from Portland State University, who specializes in nineteenth and twentieth-century peninsular Spanish literature.

These open textbooks, by the late Peter Smith, were produced by the University of Victoria and funded, in part, from a BCcampus OER Grant.

Open practices are empowering faculty, staff and students in Canada to transform the way they create, manage and share their research and educational efforts. Join us on September 29, 2017 for a full day of hands-on workshops<http://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/open-scholarship-in-practice/> exploring the practice of open scholarship including an afternoon session hosted by the Center for Open Science about the many simple actions researchers can take to increase the efficiency and reproducibility of their work with the Open Science Framework platform<https://osf.io/>.
The Open Science Framework (OSF) is an open source web application that supports the research workflow, enabling scientists to collaborate and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their research by making it much easier (in fact, virtually automatic) for researchers to keep track of what they've done, and why. This framework, which does not require any specialized knowledge of programming, was used to work on an important study<https://www.nature.com/news/over-half-of-psychology-studies-fail-reproducib…> of the reproducibility of psychology research.
Additional workshops will explore topics ranging from new tools for open data analysis and scientific computation to innovative pedagogies that become possible when students and faculty members become co-creators engaged in meaningful, generative knowledge creation.
