Hi Deborah,
Thanks for bringing this forward. I’ve been trying to do this at UVic and didn’t have much
luck. We use Banner which is what KPU uses. I talked to Rajiv about how this can be done
and it is not very difficult, but we would need to get buy in Registrar’s and definitely
the Learning and Teaching Centre. In my initial query, I had buy in from Registrars and
not the LTC. And later the Registrars removed that acceptance for the project on advice
from the LTC.
Recently, I heard that the university is interested to know about how much students spend
on textbooks across campus. The project was tasked to two Senate committees.
Unfortunately, I’ve not heard back from either on starting this project yet.
A year ago, I started a
project<https://onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca/openedresources/uvic/etextbooks/>
documenting the number of textbook titles listed in the Bookstore catalogue and looked to
see if we had the titles in the Library. We’ve renewed the project this
year<https://onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca/openedresources/uvic/e-textbooks-2022-2023/>.
Here’s a
summary<https://onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca/scholarlycommunications/2022/03/15/maximizing-library-eresources-for-students/>
of the year 1 of the project.
“In conducting the project we identified 327 total titles used in 270 courses during the
fall and spring terms. We searched the University Bookstore’s textbook
catalog<https://www.uvicbookstore.ca/text/> and titles adopted through the Libraries
Course Reserves<http://coursematerials.library.uvic.ca/ares/> service to identify
titles adopted by instructors. In adopting the Libraries licensed resources for their
courses, we believe instructors saved UVic students a total of $625,521.91 and in doing so
created high impact for students’ access and affordability to a quality education.”
More than you asked for, but thought you might be interested.
Regards
Inba

Subject: [Bcoel] Question about identifying no textbook cost at the point of
registration
Hello,
Please excuse the cross posting but I want to reach out to those who are not on the
canadaoer listserv.
The BC Open Education Librarians group is planning an event for Open Education
Week<https://oeweek.oeglobal.org/> March 6 – 10, 2023 We are planning a session on
how courses can be marked as having no textbook cost in their registration system. We know
from Marking Open and Affordable
Courses<https://uta.pressbooks.pub/markingopenandaffordablecourses/> that KPU does
but we would like to know from others in B.C. if they are doing the same or even in the
planning process. It would also be useful to know what registration system you use.
Thank you - your input and time is much appreciated.
Best,
Debra.
