Call for Expressions of Interest – CARL Visiting Program Officer for Open Education

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/> is the national voice of Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries and two federal institutions. A bilingual not-for-profit organization, CARL coordinates national initiatives across its member institutions and promotes their causes to achieve excellence in research and higher education.
CARL invites applications for a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) focused in the area of open education (OE). The position will entail working for CARL for the equivalent of one day per week, and is expected to start in October 2021, for a period of one year. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 10, 2021.
Visiting Program Officer positions are an arrangement between CARL and the individual’s home institution, normally for a minimum period of one year at 20% of their time. There is no salary remuneration from CARL associated with this position; the home institution continues to pay the Visiting Program Officer’s salary. Benefits arising from this experience for the incumbent and the home institution include broadened experience and knowledge gained from working on national initiative; while for CARL and its members, the position helps advance a common priority.
In 2018, CARL identified OE leadership as an important area for capacity building within its institutions. CARL has since formed an Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/advancing-research/scholarly-communication/open-ed…> and led activities and programs designed to bolster practice and support the development of national leadership in this area. CARL has also initiated engagement with other post-secondary stakeholder groups in considering strategies for increasing the momentum of open education in Canada. The VPO for OE will guide CARL’s evolving program of open education initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITY:
In collaboration with Joy Kirchner, chair of CARL’s Open Education Working Group (OEWG), and with Lise Brin, CARL’s full-time Program Officer supporting the Advancing Research Committee’s initiatives, the VPO will take a leading role in planning and delivering CARL’s OE efforts, working closely with the CARL Open Education Working Group to shape its slate of OE-related activities and communications plan and deliver these activities, including but not limited to “OeLE Light,” a workshop-in-a-box version of the Open Education Leadership Essentials workshop offered by the OEWG in 2020, and CARL’s communication activities related to OER.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be based at a Canadian post-secondary institution;
* Must have obtained library director’s agreement for the arrangement with CARL as described;
* Possesses excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
* Has proven group facilitation skills or will have successfully delivered training programs to peers, and demonstrates the ability to ensure diverse experiences and perspectives are treated respectfully;
* Has project management experience;
* Has significant experience and expertise in the areas of open education and open educational resources;
* The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in French and English will be deemed an asset.
If there are multiple candidates who fulfil the criteria above, selection will be based on demonstrated leadership, prior involvement, and level of institutional support; and may involve an interview.

L’Association des bibliothèques de recherche du Canada (ABRC)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/fr/> représente les vingt-neuf plus grandes bibliothèques de recherche universitaires au pays et deux établissements fédéraux. À titre d’organisme bilingue sans but lucratif, l’ABRC coordonne les initiatives nationales de ses établissements membres et fait progresser leurs causes afin d’atteindre l’excellence dans la recherche et l’enseignement supérieur.
L’ABRC invite les personnes intéressées à présenter leur candidature pour le poste d’agente ou d’agent de programme invité(e) (API) pour l’éducation ouverte (ÉO). Le poste nécessitera au moins un jour de travail par semaine pour l’ABRC et devrait commencer en octobre 2021 pour une durée d’un an. La date limite pour présenter une demande est le vendredi 10 septembre 2021.
Le poste d’API consiste en une entente entre l’ABRC et l’établissement d’attache de la personne, normalement pour une période minimale d’un an à 20 % de son temps de travail. La rémunération de ce poste n’est pas assurée par l’ABRC, mais par l’établissement d’attache qui devra continuer à payer le salaire de la personne. Grâce à ce poste, le ou la titulaire et son établissement d’attache élargiront leur expérience et leurs connaissances liées à des initiatives nationales, alors que l’ABRC et ses membres feront progresser une priorité commune.
En 2018, l’ABRC a reconnu l’importance du leadership en éducation ouverte pour contribuer à renforcer les capacités de ses établissements membres. L’API pour l’éducation ouverte orientera le programme en pleine évolution d’initiatives d’ÉO de l’ABRC.
RESPONSIBILITÉS
En collaboration avec Joy Kirchner, présidente du Comité sur l’éducation ouverte de l’ABRC et Lise Brin, agente de programme à temps plein à l’ABRC qui appuie les initiatives du Comité sur l’avancement de la recherche, l’API jouera un rôle de premier plan dans la planification et l’exécution des activités de l’ABRC relatives à l'éducation ouverte. Il/elle travaillera en étroite collaboration avec le GTÉO pour établir la liste des activités et des plans de communication et pour exécuter ces activités, y compris, mais sans s’y limiter, « OeLE Light », une version d’atelier en boîte s’inspirant de « Open Education Leadership Essentials (OeLE)» [Atelier sur les principes fondamentaux de leadership en éducation ouverte], un atelier offert par le GTÉO en 2020, ainsi que les activités de communication de l’ABRC liées aux REL.
COMPÉTENCES REQUISES
* Être en poste dans un établissement d’enseignement postsecondaire au Canada;
* Avoir obtenu l’accord de sa direction de bibliothèque pour l’entente avec l’ABRC, telle que décrite ci-dessus;
* Posséder d’excellentes aptitudes en communication verbale et écrite;
* Posséder des compétences éprouvées en animation de groupe ou avoir offert avec succès des programmes de formation à des pairs et démontrer une capacité à traiter diverses expériences et perspectives avec respect;
* Avoir de l’expérience en gestion de projet;
* Posséder une expérience et une expertise importantes dans les domaines de l’éducation libre et les ressources éducatives libres;
* La capacité de communiquer efficacement tant à l’oral qu’à l’écrit en français et en anglais sera considérée comme un atout.
Si plusieurs candidatures répondent aux critères ci-dessus, la sélection sera fondée sur le leadership démontré, l’engagement préalable dans des initiatives d’envergure nationale et le niveau de soutien institutionnel. Une entrevue pourrait être exigée.

BCcampus is offering five scholarships of $200 each to five faculty or staff to participate in the Regional Leaders of Open Education (RLOE) Network<https://www.cccoer.org/rloe/>. This amount would cover the entire cost of the program, which will be held online.
This scholarship opportunity<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/scholarship-opportunity-to-p…> provides the chance for faculty and staff at B.C. public post-secondary institutions to learn about how open educational resources and practices can help their students and to receive valuable mentorship from open education leaders on how to implement an institutional open education strategy.
The program requires a commitment of 12 synchronous hours and 12 asynchronous hours. The program will run for three cohorts, each of which will be in session during one of these date ranges:
* October 25 to November 12, 2021
* January 24 to February 11, 2022
* May 23 to June 10, 2022
The deadline to apply for the first cohort is Tuesday, September 10.

I am writing to let you know about a BCcampus expression of interest request regarding the development of open courses<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/expression-of-interest-devel…>.
In summer 2020, BCcampus began creating a collection of open courses<https://collection.bccampus.ca/> to assist instructors and course developers in creating and updating their courses, particularly while transitioning from in-person teaching to online. The collection currently contains nine full courses that are openly licensed and ready for use.
We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/> to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook.
Up to $8000 is available per grant, depending on how much work is required.
Deadline for submissions is September 20, 2021.
