Wicked Problems and Open Remedies: A student centered approach

In planning and policy, a wicked problem is one that is difficult or impossible to solve due to incomplete, contradictory, interconnected, and/or changing factors. A problem that requires a major change in practice, belief, or behaviour
for many people is often a wicked problem. Drawing on this idea, we turn our attention to the wicked problem in higher education of empowering students in the classroom, and centre student voices in exploring the challenges and potential solutions for tackling
this problem.
This event is organized by the BC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL) group with sponsorship from BCcampus, Capilano University, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Langara College, and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan campus.

Open Education Research: Tips and advice

Faculty across BC have access to tremendous support and opportunities to engage in open education. If you’re curious about open education research, this session is for you. In this session, you’ll hear from one instructor who is completing
a research study on the perceptions of faculty and students towards open pedagogy. Learn more about her project and gain tips and advice to help launch your own research project.

Indigenous Resources for Virtual Classrooms
Facilitated by Rachel Chong
This workshop provides support towards KPU's Vision 2023 goal to "embrace all cultures and promote a renewed, authentic approach to Indigenization". This session will cover how to integrate asynchronous video instruction on the respectful
use of Indigenous information with the Indigenous Information Literacy video playlist, add special topic support through the Indigenous Studies guide for areas such as Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous literature, and more. There will be ample time for
discussion to help generate ideas for optimal classroom use.

Open Pedagogy in Practice: Students as content creators
Facilitated by Andrea Niosi
No textbook? No problem! In this session you will learn how one faculty member designed a 4th year capstone course so students could become content creators for the course. In 13 weeks, 34 KPU students designed and published an OER that
now serves other educators, students, and a broader audience of users. Hear how to structure such an ambitious project (online!) and from the students themselves who participated in the course and co-authored the OER.
