Dear colleagues,
Open Education Week is fast approaching! To celebrate, BCcampus is hosting an Open Education Challenge Series<https://oechallenge.opened.ca/about-the-open-education-challenge-series/> for educators interested in learning more about open education practices (OEP). From March 1 to March 5, we will release two challenges a day. A challenge is a micro activity that you can do in 10 minutes or less that will introduce a small aspect of open education.
Everyone is welcome to participate, but the challenges are designed for educators who are new to open education. Topics to explore include open licences, open textbooks, and perhaps even open pedagogy! This isn’t a bootcamp or crash course in open education: it’s more of a tasting buffet of appetizers, designed to allow even the most time-constrained educators to participate.
Please share this event with your departments and networks, especially those who are new to open education. Invite your colleagues to participate with you! Wicked Problems and Open Remedies: A student centered approach

Panelists: Kristen Morgan (UBC Okanagan), Sophia Nguyen (SFU), Caitlin Spreeuw (Douglas College)
In planning and policy, a wicked problem is one that is difficult or impossible to solve due to incomplete, contradictory, interconnected, and/or changing factors. A problem that requires a major change in practice, belief, or behaviour for many people is often a wicked problem. Drawing on this idea, we turn our attention to the wicked problem in higher education of empowering students in the classroom, and centre student voices in exploring the challenges and potential solutions for tackling this problem.

Indigenous Resources for Virtual Classrooms

This workshop provides support towards KPU's Vision 2023 goal to "embrace all cultures and promote a renewed, authentic approach to Indigenization". This session will cover how to integrate asynchronous video instruction on the respectful use of Indigenous information with the Indigenous Information Literacy video playlist, add special topic support through the Indigenous Studies guide for areas such as Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous literature, and more. There will be ample time for discussion to help generate ideas for optimal classroom use.

No textbook? No problem! In this session you will learn how one faculty member designed a 4th year capstone course so students could become content creators for the course. In 13 weeks, 34 KPU students designed and published an OER that now serves other educators, students, and a broader audience of users. Hear how to structure such an ambitious project (online!) and from the students themselves who participated in the course and co-authored the OER.

Description: Are you interested in what ArtxHistory.org founder Natalie Coletta describes as "rejecting the dominant language and scholarship that create a climate of elitism and exclusivity" in art history? Are you curious about using open educational resources (OERs) to do so? Join us for an afternoon of talks with three art historians leading the development of open access teaching materials that seek to challenge traditional textbook conventions. Leah Clark will share how Open Arts Objects, an open access platform providing free films inspires diverse audiences to understand art and visual culture while leading change in museum educational programmes and professional practice and increasing public awareness about a global approach to art history. Natalie Coletta founded the ArtxHistory portal as a means to decolonize academia, while serving students and teachers and addressing challenging topics in the areas of artistic practice, history, and critique of 20th and 21st century art. Smarthistory's Dean of Content and Strategy, Lauren Kilroy-Ewbank will speak to how the resource's free, award-winning digital content unlocks the expertise of hundreds of leading scholars making the history of art accessible and engaging to more people around the world.

Request for Proposals: COVID-19, Online Instruction, and Open Educational Resources
KULA: Knowledge Creation, Dissemination, and Preservation Studies is requesting proposals for a forum on the shift to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. We seek commentaries and teaching reflections (especially contributions that openly share syllabi and teaching materials with the broader community) from faculty members, librarians, and other staff working at post-secondary institutions who have transitioned to and developed pedagogical materials, especially Open Educational Resources (OERs), for online instruction in the last year. How has your teaching evolved? What are the demands and challenges of the digital environment? What has worked, and what has not? How have students responded?
As a multidisciplinary journal, we encourage submissions from scholars and practitioners across disciplines, and we are interested in experiences with both synchronous and asynchronous teaching. We also welcome submissions with student collaborators.

Educational Leave Recipient
The Office of Open Education would like to extend its congratulations to Pamela Ip (School of Business) on receiving an Educational Leave to create an open educational resource (OER) and ancillary resources for MRKT 1199: Introduction to Marketing. This project is estimated to save KPU business students roughly $300,000 a year. Pamela’s project is the first step toward establishing an open online course in Marketing in the hope of further reducing barriers.
About Open Educational Resources (OER) Grants
The Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant program provides funding and staff support to regular KPU faculty members interested in creating, adapting, and adopting OER. Faculty can apply for up to $4000 in funding to create OER or up to $2000 to adapt existing OER! The application deadline for OER Creation and Adaption grant for Summer 2021 is May 1. Apply anytime for an OER Adoption Grant.
