I am writing to let you know about online office hours offered by BCcampus to educators in need of support shifting from face-to-face to online instruction. We are offering three sessions this week, the details of which are included below.
Working Together, Learning Together
Invitation: To educators and anyone doing the work of “pivoting online” who would like to drop in with questions, and/or to hear others’ challenges and solutions.
Who is hosting: BCcampus — a passionate group of instructional designers, learning technologists, administrators, and more!
And why… We feel the enormous challenge you are facing today and in the weeks to come. We want to offer support, particularly to institutions and educators without access to a large teaching and learning support team.

Expectation setting: We cannot offer or replace institution-specific supports, but we CAN talk through challenges like:
* I have an in-class final exam worth 30% – what could I do instead?

* I want to do a live online session but I’ve never done that before – what can I do?
* I have this assignment … I’m not sure how to do it online – do you have ideas?

I am delighted to inform you that our inaugural Open Education Research Institute on May 14 is now full, with participants from across 15 institutions registered for the event, which will be held at our Civic Plaza campus. A waitlist is available.
As a reminder, the Open Education Research Institute (OERI) is an opportunity for new and emerging researchers interested in open educational practices to deepen their knowledge and sharpen their skill set while connecting with other researchers and joining a Provincial mentorship network. The one-day institute will begin with an overview of existing research on open educational practices, including a special focus on research conducted in or by researchers in British Columbia. Participants will learn about different theoretical and methodological frameworks for research in open education and receive guidance on practical issues such as preparing applications for ethical review of their research projects and publishing their work in open access journals or repositories. Participants will work in affinity groups to draft and revise their research questions and be paired with an experienced researcher, who will serve as their mentor for the following year.

Following the success of last year’s cohort, I am delighted to share this call for applications for the 2020 Open Pedagogy Fellowship<https://www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship> that will once again focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<https://en.unesco.org/sdgs> (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of 17 goals that address a wide range of social issues, such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and peace and justice. This year, in addition to continuing to partner with faculty at Montgomery College (Maryland, USA), the fellowship is expanding to include faculty from Maricopa Community Colleges (Arizona, USA).
This fellowship program is designed to assist faculty with creating assignments to help students become agents of change in their own communities. Each fellowship team (which will include at least one faculty member from KPU and one faculty member from either Montgomery College or Maricopa Community Colleges) will design three “renewable assignments” during Summer 2020. A minimum of two assignments will be deployed in the classes of each fellowship team during the subsequent academic year. Faculty are expected to present to the KPU community at appropriate venues (e.g., Teaching, Learning, Scholarship, & Research Symposium) on their work. A student showcase will take place during the Spring 2021 semester (tentatively planned for Tuesday, February 23, 2021).
It is anticipated that up to 10 teams will be selected per year for the UN SDG Open Pedagogy Fellowship, which includes training and support from the Office of Open Education. Open Pedagogy Fellows will be required to attend a kick-off meeting and three additional meetings throughout the summer:
* Tuesday, May 26, 10:00am-1:00pm (Kick-off Meeting)
* Wednesday, June 10, 10:00am-1:00pm
* Wednesday, June 24, 10:00am-1:00pm
* Wednesday, August 12, 10:00am-1:00pm
KPU faculty interested in becoming a UN SDG Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellow should discuss their interest with the Rajiv Jhangiani<mailto:rajiv.jhangiani@kpu.ca>, Associate Vice Provost, Open Education. There will be priority consideration for applications for teams, including interdisciplinary teams. Communications with Montgomery College/Maricopa Community Colleges faculty and students can be done entirely through web conferencing and/or email. Completed applications must be endorsed by the Dean of your Faculty/School and submitted to open(a)kpu.ca<mailto:open@kpu.ca> by midnight on March 30, 2020. Applications will be adjudicated by the Open Education Working Group<http://www.kpu.ca/open/oewg>. Faculty will be notified of acceptance into the fellowship the week of April 6, 2020.
