BCcampus Open Education has just posted a NEW grant opportunity: the Open Education Sustainability Grant for Institutions<https://open.bccampus.ca/call-for-proposals/open-education-sustainability-g…>.
This call for proposals is for institutional open education working groups in British Columbia to provide small open educational grants, funded by BCcampus and matched by the institution, in order to improve the sustainability of open education. The Open Education Resource Sustainability Grant for Institutions may also be used for, but is not limited to, workshops, training, and institutional support for OER and open education infrastructure. The proposal deadline is August 22nd.

Many of you are familiar with Creative Commons licenses<https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/licensing-types-examples/>, which provide the legal mechanism for creating and sharing open educational resources. Two years ago Creative Commons launched an open education platform, which brings together people from around the world interested in open education in order to stay abreast of new developments, explore opportunities to collaborate, and contribute to global perspectives on open education to strengthen advocacy worldwide.

The US-based Open Education Group (http://openedgroup.org/) is an interdisciplinary research group that supports and conducts original, rigorous, empirical research on the impact of OER adoption on a range of educational outcomes. Both Farhad Dastur and I have benefited from terms as OER Research Fellows and I would be happy to discuss this opportunity with you and serve as a reference.
More information about the program:
Successful candidates will publish papers relating to the educational outcomes that take place when OER and/or open pedagogy are substituted for traditional learning materials and approaches. OER Research Fellows will receive funding to attend two conferences, one of which will be the Open Education Conference in Phoenix, AZ, October 30 - Nov. 1, 2019. The second conference will be the 2020 OpenEd conference (date and place to be determined). In addition, Fellows will receive mentoring in OER research and guidance in identifying, researching, and writing specific OER projects. Small stipends will be made available to OER Research Fellows who successfully complete the program; the overall funding support for Fellows will be approximately $5,000 (including conference costs and stipend).

Libretexts<https://libretexts.org/index.html> is a wiki-based alternative to open textbooks. Founded by Dr. Delmar Larsen, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of California at Davis, this non-profit project originated in Chemistry (when it was called ChemWiki) but has since grown (with the help of US federal funding) to encompass a variety of STEM, Social Science, and other disciplines. Libretexts is a hyperlibrary that has imported all of the available open textbooks (including the OpenStax open textbooks currently used in Math and Physics). Unlike Wikipedia, not anyone can edit Libretexts (there is faculty oversight), which is why institutions such as the U of Michigan, U of Kansas, California State U and others use Libretextsas a customized open textbook for many of their Science courses.
Beyond text, Libretexts embeds multimedia (e.g., video), dynamic figures, Jupyter notebooks, Hypothes.is<http://Hypothes.is> annotations, and supports print on demand. (See: https://libretexts.org/advanced.html). Instructors who use Libretexts for their required course readings can also avail of learning analytics that can shed insight a range of interesting behaviours, such as the percentage of your students who have accessed the required readings for the first time only 24 hours prior to the exam (i.e. cramming).
Delmar has kindly offered to provide a webinar for our faculty who are interested in learning more about this approach to OER (note that there is no fee associated with using Libretexts for either students or KPU). The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday June 11 at 10-11am. For those unable to make that time, the webinar will be recorded and made available online.

I am absolutely thrilled to share the news that our wonderful colleague Arley Cruthers is the latest recipient of the BCcampus Award for Excellence in Open Education!
From the press release:
“Arley is an innovative leader in the open movement at KPU and an early adopter of open pedagogy at the university, having attended the Digital Pedagogy Lab in Vancouver in 2017. In 2019, Arley published an open textbook on business writing and received grant funding to work with external collaborators to include more diverse voices in the book and to incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing and Arley uses an open-pedagogical approach to curriculum development in all courses.
Recently Arley led two classes (50 primary and secondary students total) to collaboratively research and write a report on the impact of textbook costs on students. Students then needed to remix the report into a different format for a different audience. One of the remix projects was a game to help instructors develop empathy towards students in relation to textbook costs. At the Cascadia Open Education Summit in 2019 Arley and three students presented the game and the research to an audience of educators from B.C., Washington, Oregon, and beyond. The presentation was very well-received and many took to Twitter to share that it was one of the best sessions at the conference.
Arley has inspired numerous others in the School of Business to embrace open pedagogy and open education resources, and is incredibly well-deserving of an Award for Excellence in Open Education. Arley will be presenting on the results of the research at the 2019 KPU Symposium<http://www.kpu.ca/teaching-and-learning/tlr-symposium>.”
