I'm just the messenger, but this may be of interest to some folks on this
listserv. OE4BW is an annual “programme that enrolls mentees from all over
the world to, under a guidance of internationally recognized mentors,
develop and implement OERs based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals”.
They are very open to the size, scope, and level of projects and are
accepting proposals through November 20. Details and links below.

Hi Virginia:
Not to worry, your review of open research the other day was invaluable, the quant and the qual.
You are right that I could get into some rich inquiry, but it could be complicated. That is a weakness. Hm…have to think about this.

Hello Deirdre,
Based on what you described, the answers are yes and yes. You are applying UDL (a good thing), but you will have three research instruments. It sounds like you'll be doing more of a qualitative approach though, so I think the richness of that inquiry would work with variable research methods (we quant folks tend to be more rigid). I would recommend being clear about this approach and its strengths/weaknesses.
That said, if you really want to make comparisons (as opposed to descriptions), having students choose different modes of expression is complicated.
I hope this helps!
Virginia

Subject: [OERI 2021] multiple modes of expression OR research instruments
Hello Colleagues:
I am grateful for all the past research, the presentations, the resources and the chats at OERI2021 so far.
I was speaking with our mentor Michelle Harrison and my other affinity group member Maya Hey about ways for students to express thoughts and feelings about their own processes during a research project involving them. I want to complement the student focus groups I am organizing (not yet REB approved).
I would like students to document their own process. I would provide students a choice on how to document, for example, in a written diary, and audio diary, or concept map. Am I simply and justly applying Universal Design for Learning principles, encouraging multiple means of expression as I would in class?
Or, and this is the question, because each of those mediums and activities is different—writing, speaking, drawing—am I creating three research instruments? Thoughts?
Michelle and Maya can add here to further represent our conversation.

Hi Deirdre
Well, you are offering options which follows Universal Design Principles but because you are using the information submitted for data gathering and research purposes then you are using 3 research instruments.
In my understanding it is the purpose and use of the things you gather that determine how they are viewed. The options are not being used for learning but for data gathering.
My 2 cents
