CAUL-CBUA Strategic Plan: Goal 6.1 Foster excellence and innovation across the region by supporting the work of the CAUL-CBUA committees, to develop emerging initiatives - Open Educational Resources (OER)

Hello Everyone,

The Council of Atlantic University Libraries (CAUL-CBUA) is please to announce the first recipients of the newly launched AtlanticOER Development Grants (@AtlanticOER).  AtlanticOER Development Grants are intended to encourage and support educators in the Atlantic Region in the adaptation, adoption, creation, and curation of open educational resources (OER), and to increase access to course materials for students.  Each grant is for up to $2,000 and is awarded to individuals, departments, groups, or institutions in the Atlantic Provinces to help achieve the following objectives:

• Support the creation or adaptation of open textbooks and ancillary materials, such as PowerPoint slides, quiz banks, images, and other digital study or interactive aids;
• Create a variety of OERs developed for use by educators and students in credit-bearing courses;
• Etablish supportive events for the development of content for OERs, such as sprints (a collaborative in-person or virtual event to create or adapt an open textbook or ancillary resources); or
• Distribute funds to maximize direct benefit to a wide range of student learners and inquiry across a diversity of disciplines

The 2021 AtlanticOER Development Grant recipients are:

Dr. Erin Mazerolle, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, St. Francis Xavier University

Project: This project will focus on the development of an open electronic textbook and companion lab manual, “Answering Questions with Data”.

Course: PSYC 292: Introductory Statistics for Psychology Research

Dr. Heather Green, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Saint Mary’s University

Project: This project aims to raise awareness of Northern issues and experiences by incorporating them into post-secondary course curriculum and creating an online teaching module on environmental histories of borders in the North (North American Arctic and subarctic).  A second goal of this project is to incorporate First Nations traditional knowledge and oral history from the North into course material.

Course: HIST 2833: Environmental History of North America

Dr. Jules Fauteux, Faculty Member, School of Business and Creative Industries, Nova Scotia Community College

Project: This project will adapt four textbooks which have been part of an Open Education Resource (OER) pilot in the School of Business and Creative Industries at Nova Scotia Community College.  The project will facilitate more widespread use of the OER once adapted.  In the 2021/2022 academic year students using these OER textbooks will have consistent access to quality learning resource at no cost to them which will make learning more accessible.  Under the supervision of an instructor, a NSCC student will be engaged to review and suggest improvements to the OER’s so that they are optimized from the student perspective.  The success of this initiative may also encourage other faculty to adopt and adapt more OERs.

Project: This project is focused on the development of an open textbook that extends existing open textbooks with customized content aimed at an Atlantic Canadian audience; the textbook will reflect the concerns of underrepresented groups and will feature examples drawn from student workplace experiences.

Course: COMM 1715: Business Communications

Dr. Paul De Decker, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Project: “The Science of Stuttering” (TSS) is a web-based module for use in an existing university or college level course in phonetics, sociolinguistics, or clinical phonetics. It is also suitable for standalone individual use. TSS is created through collaboration with people who stutter (PWS), their families, friends and caregivers and speech language pathologists. This open education resource will introduce learners to issues in stuttering research and help develop skills that will be useful for students considering graduate study in speech language pathology. It is meant to challenge everyone to better understand the lived experiences of PWS and SLPs in the clinical treatment of stuttering.

Bonjour à tous,

Le Conseil des bibliothèques universitaires de l'Atlantique (CAUL-CBUA) est heureux d'annoncer les premiers récipiendaires des nouvelles subventions de développement RELAtlantique. Les subventions de développement AtlanticOER visent à encourager et à soutenir les éducateurs de la région de l'Atlantique dans l'adaptation, l'adoption, la création et la conservation de ressources éducatives libres (REL), et à accroître l'accès au matériel de cours pour les étudiants. Chaque subvention est d'un montant maximal de 2000 $ et est accordée à des particuliers, des ministères, des groupes ou des institutions des provinces de l'Atlantique pour aider à atteindre les objectifs suivants:

• Soutenir la création ou l'adaptation de manuels libres d’accès et de matériels auxiliaires, tels que des diapositives PowerPoint, des banques de quiz, des images ainsi que d'autres études numériques ou aides interactives;
• Créer une variété de REL qui pourront être utilisées par les éducateurs et les étudiants dans des cours crédités;
• Établir des événements de soutien pour le développement de contenu des REL, tels que des « sprints » (un événement collaboratif en personne ou virtuel pour créer ou adapter un manuel libre ou des ressources auxiliaires); ou alors

Projet: Ce projet vise à sensibiliser aux problèmes et aux expériences du Nord en les intégrant au programme d'études postsecondaires et en créant un module d'enseignement en ligne sur les histoires environnementales des frontières du Nord (Arctique et subarctique nord-américains).  Un deuxième objectif de ce projet est d'intégrer les connaissances traditionnelles des Premières Nations et l'histoire orale du Nord dans le matériel de cours.

Projet: Ce projet adaptera quatre manuels qui ont fait partie d'un projet pilote de ressources éducatives ouvertes (REL) à la School of Business and Creative Industries du Nova Scotia Community College.  Le projet facilitera une utilisation plus généralisée des REL une fois adaptées.  Au cours de l'année universitaire 2021/2022, les étudiants utilisant ces manuels REL auront un accès constant à des ressources d'apprentissage de qualité sans frais pour eux, ce qui rendra l'apprentissage plus accessible.  Sous la supervision d'un instructeur, un étudiant du NSCC sera engagé pour examiner et suggérer des améliorations aux REL afin qu'elles soient optimisées du point de vue de l'étudiant.  Le succès de cette initiative peut également encourager d'autres facultés à adopter et à adapter davantage de REL.

Projet: « The Science of Stuttering » (TSS) est un module en ligne destiné à être utilisé dans un cours existant de niveau universitaire ou collégial en phonétique, sociolinguistique ou phonétique clinique. Il convient également à une utilisation individuelle autonome.  Le TSS est créé grâce à la collaboration avec les personnes qui bégaient (PWS), leurs familles, amis et soignants et orthophonistes.  Cette ressource éducative ouverte présentera aux apprenants les problèmes de la recherche sur le bégaiement et aidera à développer des compétences qui seront utiles aux étudiants envisageant des études supérieures en orthophonie.  Il vise à inciter chacun à mieux comprendre les expériences vécues des PWS et des SLP dans le traitement clinique du bégaiement.
