We have just published the date (April 16, 2018) for the next two [ https://open.bccampus.ca/pressbooks-training-webinar/ | Pressbooks Training webinars ] . These sessions are open to all B.C. faculty and staff.
In addition to the Introduction session, we will also be offering: Intermediate 1: How to import and export files, and make textbook copies for open textbooks created or revised in Pressbooks. The intermediate session will include Pressbooks updates such as the new cloning feature.
For faculty and staff who do not have experience using Pressbooks, it is strongly recommended that they take the Introduction webinar before the Intermediate. These two webinars are conveniently scheduled so they can be taken on the same day.

Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellowship - for 2018
BCcampus Open Education is taking applications for 2018 Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellowships. Post-secondary faculty in British Columbia are eligible to apply for one of three 1-year positions. Successful candidates will help raise awareness of open educational practices through advocacy and will conduct, present, and publish research on open educational practices at B.C. institutions.

Designing Open Resources, Strategies, and Approaches

Students are advocates and supporters of open education, creating, adapting and sharing resources, using open technologies and getting involved in projects to build awareness among their peers. In this webinar, we will be bringing together students from across the BC Post Secondary System who are supporting open education projects and together we’ll explore what we can learn as contributors to these projects. We’ll also explore varied practices and approaches for creating well-designed, accessible and open content.

Hi Grant,
I haven’t heard from TH directly about this but have been following this development (along with others, like OpenNow and Knewton). Lots of people seeking to engage in #openwrapping wherein they add services/functions on top of OER. If you can’t beat ‘em, co-opt ‘em, I guess.
I didn’t see anything in the TH publishing terms/agreement about open licensing—only language about the worldwide rights of TH to any instructor-created content. So really just a self-publishing platform, which I suppose one could use Pressbooks.com for, even if you did not want to publish under an open license. As Phil notes, TH Marketplace is also unknown and new and does not have the reputation, visibility, and endorsement that, for example, the open.bccampus.ca repository does. Seems like a bit of a scheme to encourage vanity publishing as a way of generating content for free for TH while tying authoring faculty into their product ecosystem (or perhaps there is real value that I am missing, beyond the functionality of their interface?).
Separately, it amuses me that this company markets itself with the tag line “Make every lecture like a TED talk” (which to me reveals little understanding of pedagogy).

Volunteer opportunities:
* Registration Desk/Wayfinder : Welcome people, distribute name tags, direct people, and answer questions. This position is suited to those who enjoy dealing with details and people, and don’t mind sitting/staying in one spot. Registration desk volunteers can expect intense, fast-paced periods followed by stretches of quieter time.
* Audio Visual/Room Checker: Ensure rooms, equipment, and presenters are technically ready to go before the sessions start. You MUST be tech-savvy and able to quickly troubleshoot audio/visual issues with presenters using a variety of devices and platforms (Mac, PC, laptops, mobile devices, etc.)
* Social Events: Help with set-ups, teardowns, and other logistics during the event. Timeslots include early afternoons and late evenings. This role is good for folks who love high-energy, fast-paced settings and can perform physical tasks (moving tables and chairs, carrying boxes, etc.)
* Conference Add-Ons: Supervisors for self-care features of the festival (e.g., yoga/meditation room and gratitude/letter writing station). Be available for questions, triage, and keep areas organized and well-stocked. Timeslots are available all day, every day. This position is suitable for folks with calm demeanours who thrive in quieter environments.
* Fit-Break Leader: Be the pace-setter for brief walks outside the hotel. This job is ideal for high energy folks who can’t stop moving and love engaging with participants.

This new textbook, published by the Rebus Community, is designed for students in graduate-level nursing and education programs. Its intent is to recognize the significant role the literature review plays in the research process and to prepare students for the work that goes into writing one.

This collection of original source readings by philosophers who originated many of the issues we discuss today was written by TRU faculty member Jeff McLaughlin and was produced with funds from a BCcampus Open Education OER Grant. Major areas of philosophy covered are Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Socio-Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics.

This unique open course which is the result of a collaboration between seven colleges and BCcampus Open Education, and funded in part by an OER Grant. Authored by Mary Shier and Allison Schubert from College of the Rockies, it is at the provincial ABE level (grade 12 equivalent) and can be used as an elective course towards the BC Adult Grad Diploma. Three file formats are provided (D2L, Moodle, Common Cartridge) so the course can be downloaded into a learning management system.
