Hi everyone,

Have you seen this announcement? I have say I was disappointed when I saw the price. Douglas College is not a SPARC member so with the exchange rate, the cost for me would be around $5,360 - plus going to the Open Ed Conference would probably be at least another $2,000. I get $600 a year for my PD.

Hope, I know you were part of the beta group. Would you give us a sense of how much work it involved and what you got out of the experience? They indicate the hours per week on the announcement but is 8 hours a week accurate?

Thanks,

Debra

Subject: [LibOER] Announcing SPARC Open Education Leadership Program for 2018-2019

Dear SPARC members,

SPARC is pleased to share that we are officially launching our Open Education Leadership Program this fall, building our successful pilot. The program is open to U.S. and Canadian academic and research library professionals who want to take their work on open education to the next level, whether that's starting a new initiative or building on an existing one. We will begin accepting applications to enroll in the 2018-2019 cohort starting the week of April 23, and SPARC member institutions will receive priority enrollment and a discounted tuition rate.

Read on for more, or view our full announcement here.

SPARC launched our Open Education Leadership Program pilot last fall to answer the growing demand among our membership for professional development to equip library staff as open education leaders. Our intensive two-semester program blends online, peer-to-peer, and project-based learning to build a comprehensive understanding of the open education space coupled with practical know-how to take action on campus and beyond. The program also fosters a community of practice among each cohort, which pilot fellows say has forged connections and collaborations that will provide critical support for their work into the future.

SPARC will open applications for the 2018-2019 cohort starting the week of April 23. Click here to sign up to be notified when applications open. In the meantime, we wanted to share some details about the program for planning purposes:
  • Tuition: The SPARC member tuition rate is $2,500 covering both semesters, which reflects a grant-funded subsidy available for the 2018-2019 cohort. A limited number of additional discounts are available based on institutional need. The unsubsidized non-member rate is $4,250.
  • Travel: Fellows are required to attend the Open Education Conference on October 10-12, 2018 in Niagara Falls, NY as a mandatory part of the program. Funding and arrangements are the responsibility of each institution.
  • Time Commitment: The program runs September 24 through May 2018 with a one-month winter break. Time commitment is 8 hours per week to complete an online course during the fall, and an average of 5 hours per week to complete a capstone project during the spring.
  • Eligibility: Library professionals employed at academic or research libraries in the U.S. or Canada are eligible to apply. The program is geared toward those with open education responsibilities in their job description, regardless of the type of role within the library or experience level.
  • Notification Timeline: SPARC will open applications for the 2018-2019 cohort during the week of April 23rd. Applications received by May 11th will be reviewed and notified by June 1st. After May 11th, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as space is available. Click here to be notified when applications open.
SPARC will be posting additional details on our website over the coming weeks, and also spotlighting some of the incredible work that our pilot cohort has achieved through their capstone projects. We are thrilled to bring this exciting opportunity to SPARC members, and look forward to engaging a new cohort of leaders come fall.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions!

Cheers,
Nicole
