This time, in addition to our Introduction session, we will also be offering an Intermediate 1 session focusing on how to import certain files into Pressbooks and exporting a variety of file types. For faculty and staff who do not have experience using Pressbooks, it is strongly recommended that they take the Introduction webinar before the Intermediate. These two webinars are conveniently scheduled so they can be taken on the same day.

Open Choice invites Canadian faculty to review OER for their upcoming database
Choice, a publishing unit at the Association of College and Research Libraries, plans to release a new online database of open educational resource (OER) reviews called Open Choice. The new service will feature a significant collection of critical reviews of OER targeted to teaching faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and university staff charged with acquiring digital tools for instruction (IT, instructional technologies, etc.).
We are looking for active teaching faculty who be interested in reviewing open educational materials for Open Choice. The reviews are more substantive, averaging 2,000-2,500 words, and use a structured review rubric. The rubric provides consistency in reviews and makes them easier to write. All reviews go through a formal copyediting process. We are able to provide a honorarium of $200 for each review.

Open educational resources (OER)<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/research-assistance/format-type/oer> are gaining momentum in higher education as a means of making learning more affordable and accessible for students and creating new opportunities for instructors to adapt and customize resources for their teaching practice and subject area.
OER include any teaching and learning materials that have been made freely available and are openly licensed with legal permissions to use, adapt, and share their content. Examples include open textbooks, videos, lesson plans, learning modules, full-length courses ... and more!
Are you interested in the potential of OER to enhance teaching and learning, but not sure how to get started? Join us on Thursday, May 24 from 10:00am to 3:00pm in Room 2020 at W.A.C. I've register for the fall session for the CC Certificate course because it is priced reasonably at $300.00 while the Leadership Program is very expensive, especially after converting it to CDN dollars.

Here are two scenarios that I need you help with:
1. We are building content for an open module. Can we paraphrase and cite copyrighted material, such as studies?
2. Online videos have been created with some ideas based on a book, which is referenced in the videos. Can we cc license these videos?
My take is that copyrighted work is constantly cited in journal articles and other matter and then that new material is copyrighted to the new author or journal or whatever, so the above scenarios should be acceptable as long as the materials are not directly copied.

Great news! Pressbooks has been making changes to the interface and functionality based on your feedback. The major release for the BCcampus Open Education Pressbooks instances is scheduled for later this month. Here’s a heads up of the changes that are on the way.
Most of the improvements are under the hood. However, there are a few big changes we would like to call to your attention.
First, a new look and feel is available for the network home page and catalog. The new standalone catalog page is sortable and filterable, for improved discovery.
Pressbooks has also given the webbook a much-needed makeover, with some added functionality. A wider book layout, better scrolling and navigation are just some of the enhancements. We have also updated the Open Textbook theme at BCcampus. A big thanks to Ryerson University for supporting the development of these changes.
The Luther theme will be retiring on the same day as the new release. In their place, Pressbooks is releasing two new themes, McLuhan and Jacobs. These two themes both offer expanded theme options, and both are designed with textbooks in mind. Their development has been generously funded by [ https://www.ecampusontario.ca/ | eCampus Ontario ] . We will be continuing to use the Open Textbooks as our default theme and the theme for the BCcampus open textbook collection.
We are thoroughly testing the updated Pressbooks prior to the release and these improvements should not cause any issues with your existing books. But, if anything does come up, let us know right away at [ mailto:helpdesk@bccampus.ca | helpdesk(a)bccampus.ca ]
Other changes include:

Save Button: Pressbooks heard your pleas for a clearer way to save your chapters. It’s here! (In the past, the “save” button was named Update, Publish, or other variations based on the status of your post.) Note that when you create a new chapter, front or back matter section, you will first see a “Create” button, but subsequent changes can be saved by clicking on the new “Save” button.

Contributor Management: Pressbooks added a centralized contributor management tool where you can add contributors who can then be reused throughout your book as authors, editors, translators, reviewers, illustrators, and generic contributors.
*
Organize Page Improvements: Pressbooks revamped the Organize page, improving the display on mobile devices, and improving accessibility for keyboard navigation and screen reader users.
*
Chapter Importing: Now, you can import individual chapters from public, openly licensed Pressbooks webbooks using the Import tool. All you need to drop is drop in the URL to a book, begin the import process, then select the chapters you wish to add to your book. (Content that is private, All Rights Reserved or that carries any of the Creative Commons Non-Derivative licenses cannot be imported.)

Content Visibility: Pressbooks has made it more intuitive to manage the visibility of your content across web and exports. Now you can simply designate content visibility in web and exports on both the Organize page and the edit screen for individual front matter, chapters and back matter.

Import Files from URL: You can now import supported file formats hosted on remote (web based) sources via URL. If you have files hosted elsewhere (with the right permissions), you no longer need to download and upload files, but can import them directly with just the URL.

Ebook Start Point: Pressbooks has moved the ebook start point setting to the ebook Theme Options page to ensure that only one front matter, chapter, or back matter can be set as the ebook start point. (Note that Pressbooks tries to enforce the ebook start point you select. However, ereader devices may still override the start point you designate.)

Language Support Changes: Pressbooks has renamed the Language Support section in Theme Options to Language & Script Support to better reflect its functionality; we’ve also re-labelled Hindi support to Devanagari, to clarify that the Devanagari script supports Hindi, Sanskrit, and over 120 other languages.

Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellowship - for 2018
BCcampus Open Education is taking applications for 2018 Open Education Advocacy and Research Fellowships. Post-secondary faculty in British Columbia are eligible to apply for one of three 1-year positions. Successful candidates will help raise awareness of open educational practices through advocacy and will conduct, present, and publish research on open educational practices at B.C. institutions.

Hi Everyone,
Our Open Ed group has a question about the legality of embedding resources that are copyrighted with "all rights reserved" into an open textbook, or other OER. This would be done without obtaining permission from the creator of the resource.
It is our understanding that [ http://www.michaelgeist.ca/2012/06/warman-v-fournier-copyright/ | linking to a "restricted" resource ] within an open textbook is permissible (and frequently practiced). However, does anyone know if embedding a a restricted video is also legally allowed?

Today, Jan. 22nd, the Open Education community is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the publication of the Cape Town Open Education Declaration, a global call to action that has helped inspire thousands of open education advocates across the world.
Last March, a group of open education activists met in Cape Town and came up with recommendations which highlight 10 directions to move open education forward. Check those out at http://www.capetowndeclaration.org/cpt10/ and sign the Declaration while you're there.

This new textbook, published by the Rebus Community, is designed for students in graduate-level nursing and education programs. Its intent is to recognize the significant role the literature review plays in the research process and to prepare students for the work that goes into writing one.

This collection of original source readings by philosophers who originated many of the issues we discuss today was written by TRU faculty member Jeff McLaughlin and was produced with funds from a BCcampus Open Education OER Grant. Major areas of philosophy covered are Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Socio-Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics.

This unique open course which is the result of a collaboration between seven colleges and BCcampus Open Education, and funded in part by an OER Grant. Authored by Mary Shier and Allison Schubert from College of the Rockies, it is at the provincial ABE level (grade 12 equivalent) and can be used as an elective course towards the BC Adult Grad Diploma. Three file formats are provided (D2L, Moodle, Common Cartridge) so the course can be downloaded into a learning management system.

The team at Babson Survey Research Group is out today with a report on the use of OER in higher education. The study is based on responses of over 2,700 faculty and there are a number of helpful findings. Key Findings Include:
* Faculty awareness of OER has increased, with 29 percent of faculty reporting that they were “Aware” or “Very Aware” of open educational resources, up from 25 percent last year and 20 percent the year before.

Large enrollment introductory undergraduate courses have adopted openly licensed OpenStax College textbooks at a rate (16.5 percent) equivalent to that of commercial publication adoption.

A majority of faculty classify cost as "Very important" for their selection of required course materials. * OER can be as successful as commercial alternatives.
* Faculty report equal levels of satisfaction with OER OpenStax materials and traditional textbooks.

Business math is the study of mathematics required by the field of business. This textbook covers taxes, gross earnings, product prices, and currency exchange; loans, lines of credit, mortgages, leases, savings bonds, and other financial tools. It also discusses how to execute smart monetary decisions both personally and for their business.
There are two versions for this book: The "Basic Edition" and the "Premium Edition." While they cover the same content, the Premium Edition includes additional features such as Excel integration, Excel templates, Excel screenshots, along with lots of extra visuals and graphics to help student wrap their heads around the numbers, procedures, and concepts that they work with. The Basic Edition does not include Excel and those extra visuals and graphics in order to streamline the book.

The OpenEd team at BCcampus had a discussion this morning about possibly using an "Open Textbook" logo to help faculty learn more about or find open textbooks. One idea is that the logo would be hyperlinked to the [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/ | B.C. Open Textbook Collection ] . (This tactic was used for ApplyBC a few years ago and worked well as a visual identifier for students wanting to applying for admission online.)
As far as where the logo would be placed, this could be up to each institution and something that can be discussed further.

O ften calculus is taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas devoid of its connection to applications. In this textbook, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.
A two-volume set for an introductory calculus course has also been added, written by faculty authors at the Grand Valley State University in Michigan

We use “open” as though it is free of ideology, ignoring how much “openness,” particularly as it’s used by technologists, is closely intertwined with “meritocracy” — this notion, a false one, that “open” wipes away inequalities, institutions, biases, history, that “open” “levels the playing field. ” -Audrey Waters, From Open to Justice
Spurred by the need to make research and education accessible to all, the open movement has gained ground as the Internet evolved to enable easy sharing of different forms of media and scholarship. Open practices are enabling faculty, staff and students at educational institutions in British Columbia and beyond to reduce barriers to research and education by opening their classrooms, incorporating new resources and perspectives, broadly sharing their data, and contributing to public knowledge. But the adoption of open scholarship cannot be assumed to free of biases and conflicts, and the impacts of open practices can differ depending on the context of those practices. Unaddressed tensions caused by “openness” can lead scholars, students, and community members to feel alienated, exploited, or unheard. Unexamined risks can lead to unintended outcomes for any open endeavours.
Within these intersections lies an opportunity for open scholarship: to directly examine and acknowledge the tensions and risks inherent in openness, and to thereby create a space in which dialogue is generated and understanding of openness is deepened.
Please join BCcampus, BCIT, SFU and UBC in celebrating [ http://www.openaccessweek.org/ | International Open Access Week ] for a panel that examines the threads running through different tensions in the open movements, including:
* Indigenous & Traditional Knowledge: Open scholarship may not be respectful of community authority, ownership, and norms of knowledge sharing.
* Ethics and Privacy: Open scholarship may complicate the impacts of human participants in research, retrospective digitization, and students’ right to privacy.
* Student-faculty relationships: Affordability conversations around open educational resources may lead to tensions around faculty motivation to provide the best learning resources. Open pedagogies can create risks for students: are they supported and what rights do they have in terms of their privacy, copyright, and consent?
* Accessibility and inclusivity: Open practices may lead to digital redlining for individuals and communities and may not be truly accessible for everyone.
* Instructor-Institution relationships: Open practices may allow the appropriation of instructors’ and adjuncts’ work putting their value at risk.

I am wondering if any of you would be interested in participating in a webinar (hosted by BCcampus) to discuss the background, implications, ruling of the following Access Copyright vs. York case. For background: York University opted out of the Access Copyright agreement a few years ago and decided to try to police it on their own within their university and push the new fair use clause of the Canadian Copyright act. Access Copyright sued them and appears they have won the case.
