Hello all,
At Wednesday’s meeting, I mentioned that my colleague Jennifer Weldon developed a search box widget for the BCcampus Open Textbook Collection (as seen on Langara’s Open Education site<https://langara.libguides.com/open-education/find-open-resources-by-subject>).
It’s essentially a short piece of code, which can embedded in LibGuides and webpages generally for ‘one stop shopping’. Jennifer is happy to share it with whomever is interested. She is planning on including the code in a Word document with instructions for embedding. If you have other suggestions for how to share this, please send them my way! In the meantime, let me know if you’d like the code and I will pass it along.
Best,
Lindsay

Good morning Librarians!
I have a "weird" request - something I am having trouble finding and I am hoping you might be able to give me a hand.
In 2008 Obama credits his presidential win to winning the Iowa Caucus. His presidential strategist was key to reminding everyone that getting to the presidency mean winning Iowa.
Can anyone find me evidence of this? Details of how they won Iowa as a result of sticking to a single goal?
Thanks
Amanda

Hello all,
I just recently got involved with BCOEL, so I hope that's all right that I'm requesting input already!
I'm in the midst of creating an initial proposal to implement some form of OER at my institution as we currently do not use any open resources. I'm looking for some figures for the typical honorarium/stipend given to faculty who choose to adopt or adapt an open textbook to add to my report. If anyone is comfortable sharing the amount that is standard at your own institution or if you've come across good sources (preferably Canadian) that include dollar amounts that you can direct me to, I would be very grateful! We're in a very 'baby steps' stage, but I'm hoping to make a strong case to get started with open textbooks in the next term or two.
Thanks so much,

Open educational resources (OER)<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/research-assistance/format-type/oer> are gaining momentum in higher education as a means of making learning more affordable and accessible for students and creating new opportunities for instructors to adapt and customize resources for their teaching practice and subject area.
OER include any teaching and learning materials that have been made freely available and are openly licensed with legal permissions to use, adapt, and share their content. Hi everyone,
Just in case you didn't see this on the ACRL Update, I'm sending it along to all of you:
Call for Curriculum Designers/Presenters Open Educational Resources and Affordability RoadShow
ACRL is accepting applications from prospective curriculum designers/presenters to create and deliver a new ACRL RoadShow to support librarians in finding, using, and developing open educational resources (OERs). This introductory level, day-long workshop will be intended for academic librarians and library staff integrating OERs into their institutions and developing OER initiatives. The curriculum designers will plan and develop learning experiences for face-to-face and online learning intended to build librarians' knowledge and use of open education practices. The in-person workshops will be offered upon request on a licensed basis, as with the existing ACRL RoadShows<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT04NDQwNTI3JnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MzE3OTYmbGk9Nj…>. In-person workshops may also be offered at ALA and/or ACRL Conferences. Additional online offerings on open education would be part of ACRL's regular e-Learning program and could include a multi-week asynchronous course and one or more topical webcasts of 60-90 minutes each in an interactive online classroom.
The application deadline is May 1, 2019. A selection committee with representatives from the ACRL New Roles and Changing Landscapes Committee and ACRL staff will consider applications and conduct telephone interviews. Applicants will be notified by June 1, 2019. Complete information is available on ACRL Insider<http://ala.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT04NDQwNTI3JnA9MSZ1PTEwMDc0MzE3OTYmbGk9Nj…>.
Sounds like an interesting opportunity.

Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-athon
Date/Time: March 4, 1-4 pm
Location: First Nations Longhouse, UBC-Vancouver Campus
Cost : Free! There will be author readings, refreshments, and door prizes
Register: http://bit.ly/2X2mV0m <https://t.co/C5HVFb3vx4>
In December 2015 Daniel Heath Justice<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Heath_Justice> (author of “Why Indigenous Literature Matters<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Heath_Justice#Why_Indigenous_Literat…>") began a Twitter campaign to share the names of Indigenous writers. The reason for his efforts was to “...push back against the frequent assumptions that our literary history is any less complex, robust, or diverse than that of other peoples.”[1]<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Vancouver/Indigenous_Liter…>
So why a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon?
Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia based on a model of open community generated knowledge. The community driven nature of Wikipedia is meant to support Wikipedia’s goal of providing “…every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.”[2]<https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Vancouver/Indigenous_Liter…> However, well documented systematic bias including, information gaps, exclusions, diversity of articles and editors, and assumptions about neutrality and notability greatly impacts the information that can be found in an information source with millions of views per day.
The Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is seeking to improve the coverage of Indigenous writers on Wikipedia and to encourage diverse community editors to actively work to dissuade assumptions about Indigenous literature by raising their profile in this increasingly influential information source.

Registration Open - Open in Action 2019
Open Education Week is a global celebration of free and open sharing in education. On March 6th, join BCcampus and post-secondary partners at KPU-Richmond for a day of hands-on learning to mark the occasion. Gather with faculty, librarians, instructional designers, educational technologists and other education stakeholders for a program that aims to connect ideas with action. Participants will discuss the theoretical foundations and application of open licenses, how to find and use open education content, and much more. The event will also highlight resources and projects from B.C. campuses and beyond that demonstrate open education in practice. Participants will leave with practical ideas for opening their day-to-day work and deeper connection to the local open education community. This is a free event open to all, but registration is requested.

Hello all,
BCcampus Open Education is looking for feedback and advice on revising the taxonomy of the [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/ | B.C. Open Textbook Collection ] in order to make textbooks easier to find. Right now, the collection has 11 categories and multiple subcategories. However, the current taxonomy has a lot of flaws and no longer meets the needs of our growing textbook collection. I know that everyone is probably slowing down over the holiday season, but if any of you have the time and ability to send feedback, it would be great if that could be submitted by January 11, 2019 .
Background
As some of you may remember, Lauri reached out a while ago looking for resources to help guide the development of categories for the collection. We received a number of great resources, but because of the characteristics of our collection (it's focused on textbooks, it's quite small, and the categories must be few enough to click through), nothing really worked as-is. For the most part, I worked from the [ https://media2.proquest.com/documents/subject-categories-academic.pdf | ProQuest Categories ] , but I have made significant changes to fit the needs of the open textbook collection.
Taxonomy
The revised taxonomy will still function the same (e.g., categories can be expanded to display the subcategories, see [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/ | the collection ] for an example), but the aim is to make it easier to find books by making the categories and subcategories more comprehensive, accurate, and intuitive. Note that this taxonomy was designed under the assumption that books that fit in multiple categories (e.g. Business and communication) can be cross-posted in both.
Here is the link to where you can see and comment on the [ https://docs.google.com/document/d/10ONcYRdViFVqD3DROmxVjrcg8que67j1qD8qiL0… | draft version of Taxonomy [GoogleDocs] ] .
Questions
Feel free to send whatever kind of feedback that you have, especially if you think we're way off the mark. You can comment directly on the document or email your comments. Here are some general questions that I have:
* Do the top-level categories make sense? Should any of them be split, combined, or renamed?
* Do the subcategories make sense? Should any of them be split, combined, or renamed?
* Are there any top-level categories missing?
* Are there any sub-categories miscategorized? (note that there are probably a lot of subcategories missing, but we can add them in the future as new textbooks are identified)
Here are some specific questions that we have:
* Does English Language Learning (e.g. ESL) deserve its own top-level category? Or does it make sense to put it under the Language Learning category as I have done.
* Does Economics better belong under Social Sciences or Business?
Let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
Josie

Dear open colleagues in libraries,
Of possible interest:
Colleagues at OCLC Research, as part of their [ http://www.oclc.org/blog/main/an-open-discussion/ | work on open content ] , have a [ http://www.marketingbackupsurveys.com/OCLC/2018OCLCOA.htm | survey open on library investment in open content ] - creating it, making it discoverable, and preserving it. The survey was sponsored by the OCLC global council, and it's meant to gather data from a wide range of international libraries. It's a fairly simple survey instrument, but if it gets enough uptake, it might yield some interesting data about library publishing (among other things). It's open until mid-January. Robin DeRosa is a professor and an internationally-known advocate for Open Education. Her research and activism focus on increasing public access to knowledge, critically rethinking the profit motive in education, and piloting new architectures for programs and institutions that empower and center learners in their design. Robin is Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Plymouth State University, part of the University System of New Hampshire. She is also an editor for Hybrid Pedagogy, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that combines the strands of critical pedagogy and digital pedagogy to arrive at the best social and civil uses for technology and new media in education, and she has taught courses for the Digital Humanities Summer Institute and Digital Pedagogy Lab. A leader in the movement to develop a social justice orientation for pedagogies and practices related to Open Educational Resources (OER) and Connected Learning, Robin’s work interrogates and inspires, and offers possibilities for a commons-oriented approach to educational innovation.

Dear BCOEL colleagues,
I wanted to share an invitation to the following event<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/publish/scholarly-publishing/33758> hosted during International Open Access Week<http://openaccessweek.org/>:
Event Title: Open but not Free: Invisible Labour in Open Scholarship<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/publish/scholarly-publishing/33758>
Date: Wednesday, October 24 - 5pm-8pm
Location: SFU Vancouver (Harbour Centre), Rm 7000
Registration: Register online here<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/publish/scholarly-publishing/33758>
“When we think about ‘open’ and labor, who do we imagine doing the work? What is the work we imagine being done? Who pays? Who benefits? (And how?)” - Audrey Watters<http://hackeducation.com/2018/05/04/cuny-labor-open>
In recent years, the open scholarship movement has gained momentum by aiming to fundamentally transform how knowledge is created and shared. Making open access, open data, and open education the default in higher education promises to remove barriers to learning and make knowledge as broadly accessible as possible. In practice, though, the rise of open scholarship has resulted in new challenges for practitioners and stakeholders working within a system in transition.
To what extent do the adoption of open practices and policies in higher education currently rely on invisible labour? And what may be the impact on the sustainability of the movement? Who is able to participate? Who may be excluded? How can open practitioners and stakeholders work together to ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are prioritized in the design of new and sustainable systems for scholarly research and teaching?
Please join SFU, BCIT, KPU, Langara, UFV and UBC and the BC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL)<https://bcoel.ca/> group for this Open Access Week <http://openaccessweek.org/> panel event<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/publish/scholarly-publishing/33758> on the topic of invisible labour in open scholarship.
Event schedule:
5pm-6pm: Reception with light refreshments served
6pm-8pm: Panel discussion and questions
Featured speakers include:
Melissa Ashman (KPU)
Sanjaya Mishra (Commonwealth of Learning)
Bruce Muir (Nun wa dee Stewardship Society)
Carol Munoz Nieves (SFU)
Juliet O’Brien (UBC)
Bronwyn Sprout - facilitator (UBC)
We hope to see many of you there! And please feel free to share this event information<https://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/publish/scholarly-publishing/33758> with others you think may be interested as well.
Thanks, Hope

Hello CanadaOER,
I’ve been lurking here for the past few weeks, and wanted to mention that I’ve entered the fray of this discussion list. I’ve posted below a news item we published today, and I wanted to thank once again the librarians who joined us for an exciting one-day discussion to identify opportunities for action within research libraries.

CARL Brings Together OER Librarian Leaders to Identify Priorities for Action (http://www.carl-abrc.ca/news/carl-brings-together-oer-librarian-leaders-to-…)
September 10, 2018. – On August 22, 2018, a group of librarians committed to advancing open educational resources (OER) came together at York University for a full day of discussion towards enhancing Canadian library and librarian involvement in post-secondary OER.
The Canadian Association of Research Libraries has been monitoring the development of OER for several years, and in 2014 carried out a survey of its members regarding their involvement in OER, subsequently producing a working paper, Open Textbooks: Opportunities for Research Libraries<http://www.carl-abrc.ca/doc/open_educational_resources.pdf>.
Four years later, it is clear that library involvement in OER (and open textbooks specifically) has increased substantially. Provincial funding programs and individual projects have been developed across Canada aimed at lowering the cost of student learning materials while also offering instructors accessible content that they can tailor and develop to suit their evolving pedagogical practices. In 2012 BCcampus launched Canada’s first publicly funded open textbook development project, followed by initiatives in Alberta, Manitoba, and most recently through Ontario’s eCampusOntario. Individual OER projects aimed at supporting a specific course or area of study have also cropped up at post-secondary educational institutions throughout Canada, often the result of collaborations involving faculty, librarians, and centres for teaching and learning. Internationally, SPARC has taken a leading role in OER and open education advocacy and training, offering in 2017-2018 a first instance of its in-depth Open Education Leadership Program<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/> for librarians (a second offering is set to launch this month).
To identify needs at the national level related to OER involvement by research libraries, CARL invited ten emerging and established library leaders in OER to a one-day working meeting.
The meeting was hosted by York University Libraries and led by York’s Dean of Libraries, Joy Kirchner, who also sits on CARL’s Advancing Research Committee. Also representing CARL was Lise Brin, Program Officer working primarily in open scholarship. The invited participants were:
* Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education, SPARC
* Dianne Cmor, Associate University Librarian, Teaching & Learning, Concordia University
* Inba Kehoe, Copyright Officer and Scholarly Communications Librarian, University of Victoria
* Maude Laplante-Dubé, Bibliothécaire-conseil - Diffusion de la recherche, Université Laval
* Ann Ludbrook, Copyright and Scholarly Engagement Librarian, Ryerson University
* Hope Power, Teaching & Learning Librarian, Simon Fraser University
* Stephanie Quail, Business Librarian, York University
* Lillian Rigling, Program Coordinator, eCampus Ontario
* Ali Versluis, Open Education Librarian, University of Guelph
* Amanda Wakaruk, Copyright Librarian, University of Alberta
Some of the ideas arising from this day of discussion included: creating a “bootcamp” for librarian leaders in OER based on a train-the-trainer philosophy, implementing a distributed regional network for increasing capacity for OER advocacy and creation within libraries, forging stronger relationships with other OER stakeholder groups, and creating a statement that articulates the case for library involvement in OER. These ideas will be brought to CARL’s Advancing Research Committee and Strengthening Capacity Committee for consideration in the next weeks with a view to confirming next steps into advancing the library involvement in the OER movement in Canada.
– 30 –
CARL members include Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries as well as two national libraries. Enhancing research and higher education are at the heart of its mission. CARL develops the capacity to support this mission, promotes effective and sustainable scholarly communication, and public policy that enables broad access to scholarly information.

* Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education, SPARC
* Dianne Cmor, Associate University Librarian, Teaching & Learning, Concordia University
* Inba Kehoe, Copyright Officer and Scholarly Communications Librarian, University of Victoria

Good morning!
Came across this amazing digital literacy resource [ https://www.23things.ed.ac.uk/ | https://www.23things.ed.ac.uk/ ]
While it is mainly focused on U. of Edinburgh students, with a CC BY license, you can easily adapt the content for your Institution.

Hi Everyone,
I'm conducting researching on what subject categories (and sub-categories) should be used to catalogue textbooks in, for example, an open textbook collection and was wondering if anyone can direct me to written material on the subject. I'm looking for a few respected references that librarians use when doing this sort of work.
Thanks,
Lauri

Dear Faculty and Staff,
BCcampus Open Education is reaching out to all faculty members and staff involved in the teaching and support of anatomy and healthcare post-secondary curricula in B.C. in response to a request from the [ http://www.oeconsortium.org/ | Open Education Consortium ] to identify individuals interested in collaborating on a project that would involve the co-creation of an open anatomical atlas of anatomy images.
Background
Anatomy is a basic discipline for all medical and paramedical fields around the world. Anatomical illustrations are essential for the teaching and learning of anatomy and are universally relevant in all countries. Good quality artist-created anatomical drawings are available in anatomical atlases and textbooks but are mostly copyrighted. There are very few good quality anatomical images available under an open license.
If you think this is a good idea and want to participate in the creation and implementation of an open anatomical atlas, please respond to this email by July 15. A response to this email does not commit you to anything, it merely indicates an interest in this project.
On behalf of all interested parties that reply to this email, and as a member of the Open Education Consortium, BCcampus Open Education will submit a form expressing interest.
Regards,
The BCcampus OpenEd team
