Dear colleagues,
BCcampus has recently opened two different calls for proposals that are closing in July.
The first call for proposals is for the Identification, Evaluation, and Development of Open Online Courses and Open Education Resources<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/call-for-proposals-identific…>, which closes July 15, 2020. Proposals will be reviewed as they are received, rather than once the call closes, as the deliverables deadline is August 15.
From the call: "This call for proposals is to identify qualified institutions, departments, or individual educators to work with BCcampus on the identification, evaluation, and development of open online courses (OOCs) and other OERs."
Up to $10,000 will be awarded for the development of each course. Teams of applicants must include B.C. educators. For more information about the call and how to apply for funding, see the link to the call.
The second is the call for proposals for the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) Grant for Marketing Programs<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/zero-textbook-cost-ztc-grant…>, which closes July 24, 2020.
From the call: "BCcampus will award one grant (maximum $60,000) to a B.C. institution committed to the development of a Zero Cost Textbook (ZTC) Program (Diploma or Degree) in Marketing."
See the link to the call for more information about the grant and how to apply.

Hi Amanda,
Thank you so much for participating in our webinar series last week! Our webinar session on May 15th is titled “Copyright in the U.S. and Canada compared – why taking advance of fair use for education doesn’t cause cross-border incompatibility”. We were wondering who you think would be the best person to discuss U.S./Canada collaboration projects during this webinar. We would be happy to have you on the panel, or if you have someone else in mind you could recommend to us we would greatly appreciate that as well! Thank you in advance.

Dear colleagues,
I am writing to let you know about online office hours offered by BCcampus to educators in need of support shifting from face-to-face to online instruction. We are offering three sessions this week, the details of which are included below.
Working Together, Learning Together
Invitation: To educators and anyone doing the work of “pivoting online” who would like to drop in with questions, and/or to hear others’ challenges and solutions.
Who is hosting: BCcampus — a passionate group of instructional designers, learning technologists, administrators, and more!
And why… We feel the enormous challenge you are facing today and in the weeks to come. We want to offer support, particularly to institutions and educators without access to a large teaching and learning support team.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
* Human Support/Communications
* Exams Online
* Experiential Learning Online
Expectation setting: We cannot offer or replace institution-specific supports, but we CAN talk through challenges like:
* I have an in-class final exam worth 30% – what could I do instead?
* My students are freaking out and I can’t keep up with the messages – what can I try?
* I want to do a live online session but I’ve never done that before – what can I do?
* I have this assignment … I’m not sure how to do it online – do you have ideas?
Join us for one or both sessions:
* March 24, 2020 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm<https://urls.bccampus.ca/6rg>
* March 27, 2020 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am<https://urls.bccampus.ca/6rh>
Starting at ground zero?
Join us for the super-duper basics of online learning AKA no dumb questions session.This drop-in is for folx who are completely new to the online teaching world. There are no dumb questions. We will try and cover the basics of online learning while giving you the space to ask your questions. March 25, 2020 @ 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm<https://urls.bccampus.ca/6ri>

Hi,
This just popped up in my Twitter feed and I haven't seen it advertised elsewhere but the GoC is holding cross country consultations on open government:
"This is your chance to help shape the future of open government in Canada! Our goal is to hear what Canadians coast to coast to coast want to see in our next plan. Tell us your ideas, experiences, insights and stories on what open government means to you; what is or isn't working well so far and where you think open government needs to go."

This event will feature a series of brief talks by practitioners about innovative and open projects underway at a range of local institutions.
Program:
8:30am-9:00am: Arrivals & Refreshments
9:00am-9:25am: Welcome & Introductions
* Speaker: Elder Rose Nahanee
9:25am-10:25am: Speaker Sessions
* Using Scrum to Support Student Learning in an Open Ed course at Capilano
Speaker: Laurie Prange-Martin (Instructor, School of Business)
Description: One of the biggest challenges for faculty making the switch to Open Ed resources is the loss of the time-saving devices available from publishers, especially test banks and slide decks. Supporting the switch to Open Ed also requires the preparation of assessments, usually project-based, and active in-class learning. Learn to make project-based learning and in-class activities work using the Scrum project management method.
* Open Pedagogy in Trades Classroom Teaching at BCIT
Speaker: Chad Flinn (Instructor, Electrical Trades and Entrepreneurship for the Trades. Author: The Electric Academy)
Description: Chad shares how he uses Open educational practices and Open educational resources in his own teaching as a vocational instructor at BCIT. Throughout the past two years, Chad has experienced a shift in mindset that involves bringing the students into the process of co-creation of resources and shares how it has transformed his teaching practice.
* Kwantlen Psychology Student Journal
Speaker: Arleigh Reichl (Instructor, Department of Psychology)
Description: This talk will cover two open education projects promoting student (and faculty) learning. The first is a student-faculty collaboration to create an open access, online journal publishing the work of KPU Psychology students. The second is the inclusion of an international video competition as a course assignment – with some amazing results.
10:25am-10:45am: Break & Refreshments
10:45am-11:45am: Speaker Sessions
* From Adopting to Adapting: the Role of Pressbooks at Langara College
Speaker: Julian Prior (Chair of Educational Technology and Open Langara)
Description: Langara is one of the largest adopters of open textbooks in BC post-secondary education. Recently we are seeing more interest from instructors in adapting and creating open textbooks. This talk will discuss the role that the online authoring and publishing platform Pressbooks has played in this transition.
* Using OJS for SFU Course Journal Projects
Speaker: Kate Shuttleworth (Community Scholars Librarian and Librarian, Digital Publishing)
Description: Kate will share some examples of course journal projects at SFU Library which feature student work and involve students in the production of online, open access journals using Open Journal Systems. Students participate in the scholarly publishing workflow, work together to design and develop the journal, and showcase their written and multimedia assignments.
* Practice Makes Perfect: Developing for and Using WeBWorK Open Online Homework in Engineering at UBC
Speakers: Agnes d’Entremont (Senior Instructor, Mechanical Engineering) with students Warren Chan, Wan Fong and Tyler Leonizio
Description: Practicing problem-solving is an essential part of learning in many engineering courses. WeBWorK is an open online homework system, primarily used in mathematics, which provides instant feedback on practice problems. Over three years, instructors at UBC have developed and deployed over 1000 WeBWorK problems across seven engineering departments. We will share what worked (and what didn’t) from multiple perspectives: instructor, developer, coder, tech support, and student user.
11:45am-12:00pm: Closing & Acknowledgements
* Speaker: Tim Carson (Trades Open Education Representative, BCcampus)
Organized by the BC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL)<https://bcoel.ca/> group with support from BCcampus, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Capilano University, Langara College, Simon Fraser University, University Canada West and the University of British Columbia.

Open data user stories
We often hear “Is open data really useful? Who uses open data? What value does it bring to citizens?” We often talk about open data and its potential but it can be difficult to see the real tangible impacts and how it powers innovations. This is why we’re pleased to announce the launch of our Open data user stories! Within this new section of open.canada.ca<https://open.canada.ca/en> you’ll find eight used cases ranging from organizations using open data to start and grow their business, to students completing their thesis work, to journalists creating valuable data visualizations to inform Canadians and more.
Check out this section<https://open.canada.ca/en/stories> and be sure to come back often as more stories will be released throughout the year.
Have you used open data? Know someone who’s used open data?
We’d love to hear your stories of how open data has helped power your projects. You can contact us at open-ouvert(a)tbs-sct.gc.ca<mailto:open-ouvert@tbs-sct.gc.ca> to tell us all about it!

Hello All,
The First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program and UBC Library will be hosting an Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters/U…> on March 2nd from 1-4pm at the Sty-Wet-Tan Hall in the First Nations Longhouse at UBC Vancouver campus.
Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia based on a model of open community-generated knowledge. Attendees will pick authors from a list of Indigenous authors who have approved their inclusion in this event and edit/create their Wikipedia articles.
The event is free, catered, and features guest speakers who will share their experiences as Indigenous authors. Please bring your own laptop.

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus has identified gaps in available open educational resources (OER) for marketing programs in British Columbia. BCcampus will distribute grants to B.C. institutions or their representatives (e.g., faculty members, articulation committees, teaching and learning centres, libraries, and OER working groups) in B.C. and the Yukon for the development of open educational resources in marketing that will contribute to the development of B.C.’s first Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program in marketing. The OER Creation for Marketing grant may be used for, but is not limited to, the creation of open textbooks/ancillaries/open educational resources in the following subject areas:
* Research methods for marketing
* Consumer behaviour
* Strategic marketing management
* Integrated marketing communication
* E-marketing/digital marketing

Hello BCOEL,
BCcampus is looking at retiring its MediaWiki website (https://mediawiki.bccampus.ca<https://mediawiki.bccampus.ca/index.php/Category:BCOER>) due to its aging software. In the past BCOEL/BCOER has posted information on this site: https://mediawiki.bccampus.ca/index.php/Category:BCOER. Before BCcampus makes a final decision, we want to give BCOEL a chance to retrieve its information.
Please let me know if you need to do this. If so, how long do you need.
Thanks

Hi Linda and Sunni,
As you might know, a couple of months ago BCcampus retired its biweekly open education email updates which we'd agreed would be the means by which I inform you about new books. New open textbook additions to the BC Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/> will continue to be listed in the now weekly BCcampus newsletter. However, to ensure that you receive this information without having to hunt through our newsletter, I will email you directly when new books are added to the collection.

Hi Everyone,
I have an external academic council member who has expressed interest in learning more about Open Pedagogy and OERs (YAY!!). He has asked me for books and sites to learn more and while I have tons, I'm fighting the impulse to deluge him with information.
I'm curious, is there a book, article or website constitutes as good place to start exploring Open? If not, what would the rest of you recommend to start him at?
Thanks,
Ali

November 14, 2019 – The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) has released a statement on open education.
CARL believes that the mission of universities is to create and disseminate knowledge, and that an open scholarship system that is accessible to all readers offers the surest path towards positively impacting human life on all parts of the globe. CARL further believes that opening all forms of scholarship to wide scrutiny enhances quality, increases accountability and promotes collaboration – thus leading to higher visibility and impact. Open education practices align well with these principles, as they reduce barriers to education, leverage technology to improve teaching and learning, and can result in high quality learning experiences.

Hi All,
I'm looking for 2 open texts and was wonder if anyone has recommendations . Both are for first year undergrad intro courses. The first is for International Business and then Canadian Business Environment (think intro to business Canadian style). The request is for textbooks but any type of OERs would be welcome.
I'm in a bit of time crunch with other projects so I'd be extremely grateful for any help.
Thanks in advance,
Ali

Hi all,
I have been asked to have a table to promote open education on behalf of our campus Open Education Working Group at our upcoming campus open house for prospective students and their parents. I have been told that I can have a stand up banner and other small promotional material created for it. Does anyone have any suggestions re: what kind of information I should include on it so that it can be used multiple times? Suggested images? Pictures of what you use at your campus to give me ideas? Places to look at existing "displays"? Other stuff that I haven't mentioned, but you think might be applicable?
Thanks,
Brenda

CARL’s Open Education Working Group wants to share this opportunity for you to engage with the following professional development opportunity around Open Education. Further webinars will be announced very soon.
How to Create Inclusive and Accessible OER
http://www.carl-abrc.ca/news/free-webinar-inclusive-and-accessible-oer/
Date: October 16, 2019
Time: 10am PST | 1pm EST
Registration: https://carl-accessible-oer-webinar.eventbrite.ca<https://carl-accessible-oer-webinar.eventbrite.ca/>
Please note that although this presentation will be in English, slides will be made available in both English and French.
In this webinar, we will talk about how to design OER so they are more inclusive and accessible for all students. This will include an overview of the technical considerations of digital accessibility. For example, what are the minimum technical requirements that ensure students with print disabilities can access and navigate through the resource? We will also look at how inclusive design practices can help us create educational materials that are more versatile and useful for students. For example, what does an accessible resource look like for a student with no personal computer? Or a student with a learning disability that makes reading difficult? Ultimately, students can be very different from each other, and what may work for one student may not work for another. But by designing for those differences, we can create educational materials that are more useful, powerful, and accessible to all.

How to Create Inclusive and Accessible OER

Hi everyone,
Here at Mt Hood Community College (MHCC), our Cataloging & Metadata Specialist and I have been working to leverage MARC records to make OER easier to find.
Here’s a link to our OER MARC Template<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qRvWqGdrRw11zpKDVMWZWM4BIstAN6frkla…> – please share with your catalogers and systems librarians!
This initially started because we have a collection development policy to add anything to our collection that’s published by our faculty. There’s no reason this should exclude OER, but not having MARC fields to highlight the open content was a barrier to discovery. So we decided to solve that through local cataloging rules that track and display the following:
• 2 subject headings that indicate a resource is OER (653_6<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd653.html>: uncontrolled genre/form terms): OER and Open educational resources
• Attribution Statement which includes the license type (540<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd540.html>: terms governing use and reproduction)
• Relationship between print and electronic versions of the same OER (776<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd776.html>: Additional physical form)
• Funding source, if the OER was created on a specific grant
• Link to original and derivative works (787<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd787.html>: Other relationship entry)
• Course outcomes (sometimes difficult to ascertain without speaking with the author)
• OER revision/remix statement – a note from the author explaining how the derivative differs from the original
For a detailed explanation of what, how, and why we did this, see our recent article “Leveraging Cataloging and Collection Development Expertise to Improve OER Discovery” OLA Quarterly, Vol. 25, No. 1 (2019)<https://commons.pacificu.edu/olaq/vol25/iss1/6/>.
After that went to print, we figured out how to reconfigure our OPAC to make this OER metadata visible to our patrons. Most of the fields above are searchable, particularly the 653_6 field that indicates a resource is OER. Using that field, we built a LibGuides search box that scopes just to the OER bibs in our catalog. You can see that here, https://libguides.mhcc.edu/oer/guide
We have not yet loaded our OER MARC records into OCLC, as we want to get through this proof of concept first and have some discussions with our peers. There might be better ways to use MARC than what we’ve done here, but this is our first shot and so far it’s working quite well for us. We are excited to share it with you all!

Hello Amanda,
I received the message below from EBSCO and thought it might be from or for BCcampus. The only additional information I got from them was it was initiated from “Faculty Portal IR”.
Apologies, if this isn’t concerning you.
Regards,
Korinne

Hello BCOEL,
I have a copyright/OER question that has me stumped.
The math department is creating an open textbook and were told that math problems are 'facts' and therefore are not protected by copyright. They want to confirm if this means they can use commercial textbook math problems in their OER. (Thank you Lindsay for locating where this information may be from: a US Copyright Office Publication<https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ31.pdf>). Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate Canadian specific information on copyright and math problems, or if how 'original' the math problem is matters.
My initial reaction is that, even if a math problem is 'fact', there is still work and originality that goes into creating math problems for commercial textbooks. Has anyone helped create a math OER that has some insight?
>From my understanding the problems are calculus problems, so heavy symbol/number based instead of language heavy.
Cheers,
Darcye
