Happy Open Education Week everyone!
At Kwantlen Polytechnic University we are proud to have built world-leading institutional supports for open education, including for our ground-breaking Zero Textbook Cost program<https://www.kpu.ca/open/ztc>, the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources<https://kpu.pressbooks.pub/catalog/openkpu> (including a grant<https://www.kpu.ca/open/grants> and publishing<https://www.kpu.ca/library/OPUS> program), and faculty fellowships for open pedagogy<https://www.kpu.ca/open/un-sdg-fellowship> and open education research<https://www.kpu.ca/open/research-fellowship>.
Today I am thrilled to share that we have developed and are now launching a comprehensive, flexible, and online training program for learners worldwide. Our new Professional Program in Open Education<https://youtu.be/4GShBIbi7PA> is the ideal professional development opportunity for educators, practitioners, technologists, librarians, leaders, policymakers, and others who endeavour to widen equitable access to education. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation for new practitioners as well as to complement and significantly advance the expertise of those already working to support open education.
This program is designed to develop expertise and capacity across a broad spectrum of open educational practices, including open educational resources and pedagogies, educational technologies, policy, advocacy, and scholarship. The program balances both theoretical and practical elements, always ensuring that critical perspectives and issues are foregrounded. The program is open to all and does not require institutional membership or sponsorship.
Post-secondary institutions, non-profit organizations, government agencies, foundations, GLAM, and other groups seeking to advance the goals of open education may draw on this program to develop their staff expertise and capacity. The program is intentionally designed to include practical elements and provides the opportunity for participants to develop and refine organization-specific tools, policies, and programs.
The courses in the Professional Program in Open Education have been developed by globally-recognized experts and are offered through KPU’s Continuing & Professional Studies. To express interest in enrolling in this program (commencing Fall 2022) or to learn more, visit: https://www.kpu.ca/cps/open-education

Dear colleagues,
You are invited to participate in the BCcampus OER Support Resources Survey<https://forms.office.com/r/ht9v6iPJLu>. This survey has up to 14 questions and should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.
The purpose of this survey is to learn how BCcampus can support those who are creating, adapting, and using open educational resources (OER) for the post-secondary sector in British Columbia and the Yukon. Specifically, we are interested in what kinds of support resources are the most useful and what topics to cover.
If you know anyone who works with OER in the post-secondary sector in B.C. or the Yukon, please share this survey with them. We are looking for input from people with all levels of experience.
Please complete and submit this survey by end of day on Friday, March 18. If you have any questions or input related to the survey, send them to oerproduction(a)bccampus.ca.
Thank you,

Dear colleagues,
On March 3, 2022, we are updating the software that hosts the B.C. Open Textbook Collection. We plan for the disruption to be minimal, but the collection may be unavailable between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Pacific Time. Books hosted in Pressbooks will be unaffected.
If anyone needs urgent access to a book in the collection while the collection is unavailable, please email opentext(a)bccampus.ca with the name of the book and we will get you a copy. A notice on the collection will give the same instructions.
Sincerely,
The BCcampus Open Education Team

In December 2015 Daniel Heath Justice began a Twitter campaign to share the names of Indigenous writers. The reason for his efforts was to: “…push back against the frequent assumptions that our literary history is any less complex, robust, or diverse than that of other peoples (Daniel Heath Justice, Why Indigenous Literatures Matter?<https://www.wlupress.wlu.ca/Books/W/Why-Indigenous-Literatures-Matter2>)
In solidarity with his efforts, Honouring Indigenous Writers<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/> is a yearly event to increase awareness and coverage of Indigenous literature.
This year the organizing team has put together a schedule of free events and activities designed for virtual participation throughout the month of March 2022. The events include:
* Author readings <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> by Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm and Dallas Hunt, Joshua Whitehead, Kim Senklip Harvey, and more
* An interactive workshop and walk<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels> with Peter Morin, titled “Words to Give Back: Words that have lifted us up“
* Self-paced Weekly Wikipedia Challenges <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/activities> to increase the coverage of Indigenous authors
* Wikipedia training and drop-in Zoom sessions<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels>
* A presentation<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/workshops-panels> by Dr. Aubrey Hanson and Dr. Erin Spring on Books to Build on: Indigenous Literatures for Learning
* And a social media campaign on Twitter<https://twitter.com/HIW_Wiki>
These events and activities are free and open to anyone to participate. Please join us at our kickoff event and reading on March 7, 2022<https://hiw.open.ubc.ca/events> and learn more about the other events we have planned! You can also read more at the HIW <https://hiw.open.ubc.ca> website.
We would also appreciate your support of the event by helping to promote it through your listservs, social media accounts, and other spaces to help raise awareness of Indigenous literature and engage in open community knowledge creation.
The event team has developed a number of social media assets in a variety of sizes for ease of sharing. The assets can be downloaded here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SE0a-45pOdjLIvUtXIKI7a7XUjOAtUxA?us…
Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and thank you in advance for any support you can give in making this event a success. Thank you to event sponsors, the Institute for Critical Indigenous Studies, UBC Library (Vancouver and Okanagan), UBC Public Humanities Hub (Vancouver and Okanagan), BCcampus, University of Calgary Libraries and Cultural Resources, and Indigenous Programs and Services UBC Okanagan.

Hi BCOEL,
If you attended the January 17th meeting you might recall that after my presentation on the Adoption Finder<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PiYkOQOgTTrrI77J9-sO9HkqdX7c5BtEL_A…>, I mentioned a blog I will be writing about this tool and wanting to include comments from some of you in that piece.
To keep this easy, I ask that anyone who'd like to submit comments send them by email to me no later than Friday, February 11. Below are ideas about what these might include. (I don't expect anyone to answer all of these questions, but you can if you want.)
* How do you anticipate the Adoption Finder will be used?
* Do you think the Adoption Finder will be useful for instructors? Why and how?
* How do you plan to use it or share it with your PSI members?
*
* Do you plan to incorporate a link to and description of the Adoption Finder into your institution's collection of OE resources?
*
* Do you consider the Adoption Finder a unique OE tool? Why and how?
I will contact all individuals whose comments I select.
Thanks and regards,

Indigenous Knowledges and Open Education Edited Volume (Open Access)
Call for Chapter Proposals
The open education movement has provided a substantial improvement to the learning and research needs of students, faculty, and community members. This has been done through various barrier
free methods of publishing, and mitigates any financial strains that can occur. However, within the open access movement there needs to be careful consideration for Indigenous Knowledges, which are deeply rooted in community defined ethics and protocols, that do not fit into ordinary academic contexts. Many conversations around open education (OE) focus on a Eurocentric framework of copyright and intellectual property rights that are sometimes in tension with Indigenous knowledge systems, and the goal of this volume is to centre Indigenous ways of knowing, culture, experiences, and worldviews within the work of open education pedagogy and advocacy work. The publication target date is summer 2023.
The following provides detailed steps for submitting a chapter proposal to this open access edited volume. We encourage chapters (of 4000 to 6000 words, excluding references) that are authored
with diverse representation and scholarship (including student authors where possible), that reflect one of the following types of contributions:
* Essay (theoretical or conceptual paper grounded in the literature)
* Research paper (based on systematic exploration of a research question)
* Case Study (critical, evidence-based, and theoretically grounded reflections on the intersections of Indigenous knowledges and open education)
CHAPTER PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
We ask that the chapter proposals be submitted by email to donna.langille(a)ubc.ca<mailto:donna.langille@ubc.ca>, including the following elements by March 15, 2022:
* Working Title:
* Abstract: Max 200 words
* Type of Contribution: (research, theoretical/exploratory essay, case study)
* Keywords: 3–6 keywords
* Contributor information:
Required information for each contributor, in the correct authorship order and as you would like to see in print:
* Full name
* Institution name (in full, no abbreviations)
* Primary e-mail address
* Contributor bio (Max 100 words)
Please see the attached PDF for more information.

Dear colleagues,
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that we are growing our team by hiring an additional Open Education Strategist. This is a full-time and ongoing position located within the Teaching & Learning Commons<https://www.kpu.ca/teaching-and-learning> at Kwantlen Polytechnic University<https://www.kpu.ca/> (KPU). Dear colleagues,
The submission deadline for OTESSA 2022 has been extended<https://otessa.org/news/otessa22-final-deadline-extended-to-january-15/> until January 15, 2022.
The Open/Technology, Education, Scholarship and Society Association (OTESSA<https://conference.otessa.org/index.php/conference>) online conference will be held between May 16 and 19, 2022. The overarching theme is critical change, and the subthemes are the transitions of online learning and teaching; addressing the new iniquities; and sustaining positive change. There is also a wildcard subcategory for "innovative and inventive ideas around research or practice" that don't fit any of the subthemes.
As said in their call for proposals<https://otessa.org/2022/>: "OTESSA welcomes thinkers, tinkerers and designers from across disciplines and contexts who are exploring the role of open and digital technologies in education, society, and scholarship to be part of this conference gathering."
Review the OTESSA submission guidelines<https://conference.otessa.org/index.php/conference/about/submissions> and the OTESSA call for proposals<https://otessa.org/2022/> online before submitting.

Dear colleagues,
UBC is once again running the Program for Open Scholarship and Education (POSE)<https://pose.open.ubc.ca/> in the spring 2022 semester from January to April. Registration is open to anyone in post-secondary who is interested.
POSE is a four-month flexible and blended program that will help you develop foundational knowledge of Open Scholarship, Open Education, and Open Research. POSE will explore how open copyright licenses, collaborative practices, and networked technologies have the potential to lower barriers to knowledge by making the processes and products of scholarship more distributed, transparent, and accessible.
POSE is intended for faculty, staff, postdocs, and students with an interest in open research, open access, open data and open education. The program is open to UBCO, UBCV, and non-UBC faculty, staff, and students at the post-secondary level.
You will learn about:
* Open Education
* Open Access
* Open Research
* Open Data
* Open Tools
To support participant flexibility, the program is composed of online self-paced modules that you can complete over four months. You are also required to participate in two online synchronous sessions during the program. We will also host optional sessions each month where you can engage with various practitioners in the different areas of open scholarship and meet other participants in a synchronous environment. Upon completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
The first module will be released on January 1, 2022. The POSE kick-off session will be on January 18, 2022, and the wrap-up session will be on April 28, 2022. For more detailed information about POSE, visit the POSE home page<https://pose.open.ubc.ca/>.
To register for POSE<https://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/events/program-for-open-scholarship-and-educatio…>, you will need a UBC CWL (campus-wide login). If you don't already have one, you can register for a basic CWL account<https://activate.id.ubc.ca/iamweb/>.
Please share widely.

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus has recently released an expression of interest regarding the development of open courses<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/expression-of-interest-devel…>.
BCcampus would like to add further open courses to the open online course collection<https://collection.bccampus.ca/> that align with open textbooks currently in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection. We are looking for B.C. applicants who have developed, adapted, or adopted an open textbook in our B.C. Open Textbook Collection to develop a new open course, or adapt an existing open course, that accompanies the textbook.
This expression of interest is for individuals, groups, or institutions and their representatives (e.g., faculty members, articulation committees, teaching and learning centres, libraries, and OER working groups) in B.C. and the Yukon that are interested in developing or adapting open courses aligned with open textbooks available in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection<https://open.bccampus.ca/browse-our-collection/find-open-textbooks/>.
Note that there is no deadline for applications, as this is an ongoing call.
Estimated completion time: Four months
Grant amount: Up to $8000 per course. Three options:
* $2000 for an existing course that requires little modification
* $5000 for an adaption or major revision of an existing course
* $8000 for development of a new course
Applications will be evaluated by an internal review committee based on the following criteria:
* Experience: Applicants have experience developing OER in B.C. post-secondary education. Preference will be given to applicants who have already developed or adapted an open textbook in the B.C. Open Textbook Collection.
* Plan for timeline of completion of work.
* A realistic budget for the scope of work
To learn more about this opportunity, visit the expression of interest page<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/expression-of-interest-devel…>. To apply for this opportunity, fill out the application form linked on the EOI page and email it to Melanie Meyers at mmeyers(a)bccampus.ca.
If you have any questions about this opportunity, please contact Melanie Meyers.

Dear colleagues,
You are invited to attend the following session, Making OER Count: Incorporating OER into the Tenure and Promotion Process<https://bccampus.ca/event/making-oer-count-incorporating-oer-into-the-tenur…> on Thursday, December 2, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Pacific.
Description:
Anyone familiar with the open educational resources (OER) community knows that questions about the role of OER work in tenure, promotion, and reappointment are constant at conferences and on listservs where OER practitioners and administrators congregate. However, as criteria for tenure and promotion vary greatly between different types of institutions – and even between different departments within an institution – answering these questions can be daunting. An adaptable advisory model, called the OER Contributions Matrix [PDF]<https://www.doers3.org/uploads/1/3/2/2/132273765/the_oer_contributions_matr…>, has been created to approach this conundrum and to help guide faculty as they attempt to include their OER work in their tenure and promotion portfolios. The tool was developed by a working group within Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success (DOERS3), a collaborative of state-, province-, and system-wide OER initiatives that work together to help the OER community realize the potential of OER in a sustainable fashion. During this session members of DOERS3 will provide insight into the OER Contributions Matrix, explain how it came about, and share some potential uses for the document, including a short brainstorming session on how the matrix can be adapted for use at local institutions.
Facilitators:
Amanda Coolidge (she/her) is director of Open Education at BCcampus in B.C., Canada. She leads the province’s initiatives in open education, from open textbooks to open pedagogy, and with a team of eight other people works across B.C. to enhance access for students. Amanda has a master’s degree in educational technology and many years of experience as an instructional designer at various universities across Canada. Amanda has worked in open education in Calgary, Alberta; Nairobi, Kenya; and B.C.
Andrew McKinney (he/him) is the OER coordinator for City University of New York’s (CUNY) Office of Library Services (OLS). For OLS he administers the CUNY OER Initiative, a $4-million-a-year program that aims to increase the use of OER and open pedagogical practices across CUNY’s 24 campuses. He leverages his 15 years of working across CUNY as a graduate student, adjunct faculty member, educational technologist, faculty development specialist, and instructional designer to support CUNY’s librarians, faculty, staff, and students as they adopt, adapt, and create OER.
This event is free. To ensure we have an inclusive and welcoming environment for all, we’ve added registration to all our sessions.

Dear colleagues,
Several BCcampus websites, including BCcampus Open Education (open.bccampus.ca), are currently unavailable due to recent power outages. We do not have an estimated time of when the sites will be online. However, our technical team is working on resolving this issue as soon as possible.
Affected sites (that we know of):
bccampus.ca and subpages (e.g., covid19.bccampus.ca)
open.bccampus.ca
bcoel.ca
bctlc.ca
etug.ca
Sites NOT affected:
pressbooks.bccampus.ca
opentextbc.ca
solr.bccampus.ca
tlpd.bccampus.ca
While the B.C. Open Textbook Collection (which is housed on open.bccampus.ca) is not available right now, if you have the direct link to a particular textbook that is in one of our Pressbooks instances, it should be available, as Pressbooks and SOL*R are unaffected.
We appreciate your patience as we work to resolve these issues.

Subject: Call for proposals - OER Librarians group
On behalf of our research team, Irwin DeVries, Tannis Morgan, Michael Paskevicius and myself, I invite you to consider making a written or other media contribution to an open resource for learning design students and professionals to critically examine contemporary issues and practice in learning design. We are using a modified WordPress instance that has been designed with an invitation for ongoing evolution, extension, and reframing of the original content. Our hope is that students will continue to add to this resource as part of their coursework in a process of ongoing co-creation in a manner consistent with open licensing and pedagogy.
We are seeking textual contributions between 750-1500 words or video/audio contributions no longer than 15 minutes. Brief proposals are due by November 29.
The following topic areas are of particular interest:
-Designing for open platforms and tools
-Assessment
-Learning design in different settings (HE, corporate, public service, etc,)
-Leadership in learning design
-Open pathways for learning – outcomes and frameworks
-Learning design from various worldviews
-Open pedagogies and practices
-Inclusive and/or Universal Designs for Learning
-Scale, space and place in digital design
-Data, surveillance and privacy

Hi everyone,
I'd like to find out if there are any institutions in B.C. where the student union provides the funds for OER grants to help faculty adopt open textbooks. If this is the case at your institution could you provide a few details on how it works.
Also, if you are interested in what I hear back then please let me know and I will share what I learn.

Douglas College acknowledges that our campuses, where we live, learn, and work are located on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples of the QayQayt and Kwikwetlem First Nations.
This message is sent on behalf of Nicole Allen, SPARC.
Dear colleagues,
I’m thrilled to announce the launch of InclusiveAccess.org<https://www.inclusiveaccess.org/>: a community-driven initiative to raise awareness of the facts about automatic textbook billing.
Little known five years ago, Inclusive Access has taken off as a sales model that automatically adds the cost of digital textbooks into students’ tuition and fees. While this model is intended to address some of the challenges with high textbook costs, it is also creating new challenges for students and faculty.
How exactly does Inclusive Access work? Does it really save students money? What about this kind of program is “inclusive”? Straightforward answers to these questions aren’t always easy to find.
InclusiveAccess.org is a one-stop-shop for information, tools, and other resources to help administrators, faculty, students, and policymakers make informed decisions about Inclusive Access and its implications for the campus community.
InclusiveAccess.org was developed by SPARC with generous support from the Michelson 20MM Foundation<http://20mm.org/>. Partners<http://inclusiveaccess.org/about-us> include AAC&U, Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, Creative Commons, DigiTex, Student PIRGs, Open Education Global, and OpenStax. Other mission-aligned organizations are encouraged to join.
If conversations about Inclusive Access are happening in your campus or state, we hope you will consider sharing this resource far and wide! To stay in the loop, sign up for emails<https://www.inclusiveaccess.org/subscribe> and follow @TextbookBilling<https://twitter.com/textbookbilling> on Twitter.
Cheers,
Nicole Starr Allen

Dear colleagues,
The Community College Consortium for OER is offering a webinar on Wednesday, October 13 at 12 p.m. PDT/3 p.m. EDT called OER Funding and Impact Measurements<https://www.cccoer.org/webinar/oer-funding-and-impact-measurements/>.
The event description says, "Let’s be honest: the questions every institution or organization interested in embarking on an OER project has to ask at some point are 'Where’s the money, and how do I get it?' There are lots of ways these questions can be answered, so we’ll be discussing various OER funding streams and examine ways in which the work is measured to justify sustainability and scalability. Hear from funders and fundees alike, from across the U.S."

Call for Expressions of Interest – CARL Visiting Program Officer for Open Education
https://www.carl-abrc.ca/news/call-vpo-for-open-education-2021/
The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/> is the national voice of Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries and two federal institutions. A bilingual not-for-profit organization, CARL coordinates national initiatives across its member institutions and promotes their causes to achieve excellence in research and higher education.
CARL invites applications for a Visiting Program Officer (VPO) focused in the area of open education (OE). The position will entail working for CARL for the equivalent of one day per week, and is expected to start in October 2021, for a period of one year. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 10, 2021.
Visiting Program Officer positions are an arrangement between CARL and the individual’s home institution, normally for a minimum period of one year at 20% of their time. There is no salary remuneration from CARL associated with this position; the home institution continues to pay the Visiting Program Officer’s salary. Benefits arising from this experience for the incumbent and the home institution include broadened experience and knowledge gained from working on national initiative; while for CARL and its members, the position helps advance a common priority.
In 2018, CARL identified OE leadership as an important area for capacity building within its institutions. CARL has since formed an Open Education Working Group (OEWG)<https://www.carl-abrc.ca/advancing-research/scholarly-communication/open-ed…> and led activities and programs designed to bolster practice and support the development of national leadership in this area. CARL has also initiated engagement with other post-secondary stakeholder groups in considering strategies for increasing the momentum of open education in Canada. The VPO for OE will guide CARL’s evolving program of open education initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITY:
In collaboration with Joy Kirchner, chair of CARL’s Open Education Working Group (OEWG), and with Lise Brin, CARL’s full-time Program Officer supporting the Advancing Research Committee’s initiatives, the VPO will take a leading role in planning and delivering CARL’s OE efforts, working closely with the CARL Open Education Working Group to shape its slate of OE-related activities and communications plan and deliver these activities, including but not limited to “OeLE Light,” a workshop-in-a-box version of the Open Education Leadership Essentials workshop offered by the OEWG in 2020, and CARL’s communication activities related to OER.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be based at a Canadian post-secondary institution;
* Must have obtained library director’s agreement for the arrangement with CARL as described;
* Possesses excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
* Has proven group facilitation skills or will have successfully delivered training programs to peers, and demonstrates the ability to ensure diverse experiences and perspectives are treated respectfully;
* Has project management experience;
* Has significant experience and expertise in the areas of open education and open educational resources;
* The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in French and English will be deemed an asset.
If there are multiple candidates who fulfil the criteria above, selection will be based on demonstrated leadership, prior involvement, and level of institutional support; and may involve an interview.
To apply, please send a copy of your CV, an introductory letter outlining your suitability for this role and a letter from your library director confirming support for the nomination and the proposed arrangement, to Susan Haigh, Executive Director of CARL, susan.haigh(a)carl-abrc.ca<mailto:susan.haigh@carl-abrc.ca>, no later than September 10, 2021.

Appel d’intérêt – Agente ou agent de programme invité(e) de l’ABRC pour l’éducation ouverte
https://www.carl-abrc.ca/fr/nouvelles/appel-api-pour-education-ouverte-2021/
* Être en poste dans un établissement d’enseignement postsecondaire au Canada;
* Avoir obtenu l’accord de sa direction de bibliothèque pour l’entente avec l’ABRC, telle que décrite ci-dessus;
* Posséder d’excellentes aptitudes en communication verbale et écrite;
* Posséder des compétences éprouvées en animation de groupe ou avoir offert avec succès des programmes de formation à des pairs et démontrer une capacité à traiter diverses expériences et perspectives avec respect;
* Avoir de l’expérience en gestion de projet;
* Posséder une expérience et une expertise importantes dans les domaines de l’éducation libre et les ressources éducatives libres;
* La capacité de communiquer efficacement tant à l’oral qu’à l’écrit en français et en anglais sera considérée comme un atout.

Dear colleagues,
BCcampus is offering five scholarships of $200 each to five faculty or staff to participate in the Regional Leaders of Open Education (RLOE) Network<https://www.cccoer.org/rloe/>. This amount would cover the entire cost of the program, which will be held online.
This scholarship opportunity<https://bccampus.ca/grants-calls-for-proposals/scholarship-opportunity-to-p…> provides the chance for faculty and staff at B.C. public post-secondary institutions to learn about how open educational resources and practices can help their students and to receive valuable mentorship from open education leaders on how to implement an institutional open education strategy.
The program requires a commitment of 12 synchronous hours and 12 asynchronous hours. The program will run for three cohorts, each of which will be in session during one of these date ranges:
* October 25 to November 12, 2021
* January 24 to February 11, 2022
* May 23 to June 10, 2022
The deadline to apply for the first cohort is Tuesday, September 10.
Eligible applicants for this scholarship include faculty and staff at B.C. public post-secondary institutions who have read the RLOE Network Invitation to Participate<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M2jve42yOqjtS8_fIsieVJd6QNm0W1eEc45d-rc…>.
To apply for the scholarship, simply apply to the RLOE Network<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSedUQJEc0mOr7qleJuUaCwxQqvzCjeUp2R…>. Eligible B.C. applicants will be identified by OE Global (who runs the program) and referred to BCcampus. BCcampus will then get in touch with successful applicants to the program and cover their costs.
Any further questions about the program can be directed to Amanda Coolidge at acoolidge(a)bccampus.ca.

Dear colleagues,
This message is sent on behalf of Anahita Rezaei, Open Education & Advocacy Specialist, Centrum Cyfrowe.
Open Education Policy Forum is coming back on September 15-16 for the sixth time (and online, too). We are looking forward to seeing you at the end of the summer to discuss the “Universe of Openness,” but today, we are excited to announce an Open Call for two key events that will be held during the Forum:
* Lightning talks – presentation of the most inspiring Open Education initiatives from the time of the pandemic [September 15]. In the tradition of exchanging the best practices from Open Education, we’re seeking inspiring initiatives. About the Forum. Open Education Policy Forum is an international conference organised by Centrum Cyfrowe Foundation in cooperation with Communia Association, Hewlett Foundation, Intellectual Property Institute, OEGlobal, Otwarte Zasoby and SPARC Europe. Once a year, we bring together stakeholders (activists, researchers, teachers, policy makers) from around the world to exchange good practices and discuss challenges and opportunities faced by the Open Education community. We want to provide an opportunity for networking, exchange of knowledge and future collaborations.
“The Universe of Openness” – about the upcoming edition of the Forum. Open Education initiatives have been expanding extraordinarily since 2020. Resources, institutions and infrastructure built on the OE model provide resilience to educational systems at the beginning of remote education. The pandemic time has redefined “openness” in education. Now, with so many various projects in progress, we want to ask the following: how can the OE community maintain this growth? And how can we expand, explore and improve it in the upcoming future?
The conference will open with the premiere of a new pan-European study “Remote education during the pandemic: teachers perspective” conducted by Centrum Cyfrowe Foundation and Communia Association.

Hello!
Just wanted to pass along a professional development opportunity hosted by ACRL’s Community and Junior Colleges Library Section. Information about the event and how to register is below.
OER: What’s Next? Equity & Diversity
Thursday, July 22, 2021 @ 1PM PT /2PM MT / 3PM CT / 4PM ET
Free Online Event
Join Ann Fiddler and Dr. Rebecca Karoff for a panel focusing on what is next for OER concerning equity and diversity. Event hosted by the CJCLS OER Committee. Use the link at the bottom to register for the first of the special series.
This one-hour synchronous event will feature two presenters, followed by a Q&A:
* ANN FIDDLER
Ann Fiddler is the Open Education Librarian for the City University of New York in the Office of the Dean of Library Services. This office supports 32 libraries across 24 campuses in the 5 boroughs of New York City. Ann has been overseeing Open Educational Resource initiatives across the university since 2014. She has been the principal investigator for grants in support of OER from Achieving the Dream, The Gates Foundation, and The Public Interest Technology Network. She is currently leading the University-wide OER Initiative generously funded by New York State.
* DR. REBECCA KAROFF
Dr. Rebecca Karoff joined the University of Texas System in February 2016 as Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She is responsible for leading and supporting student success initiatives system-wide. Her work addresses the student success continuum, PK-20 and into the workforce, and recognizes the remarkable responsibility and opportunity of the University of Texas System to achieve more equitable access and outcomes for the state’s increasingly diverse students. She is the primary architect of the UT System’s student success framework, and collaborates with institutional colleagues across the UT System to ensure student financial well-being, effective advising, and students’ sense of academic and social belonging. Her work includes leadership of the UT System’s momentum-building strategy on Open Educational Resources (OER), strengthening curricular innovation, and working with faculty to embrace their roles in student success. All her work is data-informed, equity-centered and quality-driven, and she is interested in expanded approaches to measuring student success. Beyond the UT System, she is a member of the Texas Transfer Alliance, a joint effort among the Charles A. Dana Center, the Texas Success Center, the Texas Association of Community Colleges, and four of the state’s public university systems (Texas A&M University System, Texas State University System, University of North Texas System and University of Texas System) to improve transfer student outcomes. She is active in NASH, the National Association of System Heads, and is a co-author of the NASH Equity Action Framework, a tool designed for university systems to assess their progress toward, and act on the adoption and integration of essential equity practices through sustained engagement. She chairs the Equity Work Group of DOERS3, the Driving OER Sustainability for Student Success Collaborative, work resulting in the DOERS3 OER Equity Blueprint and Equity Through OER Rubric.

Subject: Vacation Notice
Hi,
I am away currently on vacation.
I will be checking my e-mail but may not always be able to respond right away, as I will be sailing on the BC coastline and mobile/wifi access is spotty.
Thanks
