Hello,
I thought I would share with you what we do with printed open textbooks in our library collection. We purchase print copies to show faculty the textbook and we use them for displays on open textbooks. However, since some of them do end up in our regular collection, we want to make sure students understand that they are freely available online, so we put a QR code and note on the front of the textbook (see attached).
Also, because some of the open textbooks come directly from OpenStax and some come from BCcampus Open textbooks, we now have a series entry for Open Textbooks and it will apply to any open textbook searched by either title or keyword.
We also now have our first open textbook on Reserve. Some students just like the physical still :)

OER Movement Survey
Call for Participants
We are researchers at Athabasca University and invite you to participate in a research study
entitled “Barriers, Incentives, and Benefits of the OER Movement: An Exploration into
Instructor Perspectives.” The purpose of this research is to explore the perspectives of instructors in various geographical areas on barriers, incentives, and benefits to using and creating OER materials.
In a survey conducted by Cengage Learning (2016), the White Paper identifies that Open
Educational Resources (OER) will potentially triple in size over the next five years; however,
it also exposes that there continues to be barriers to adoption, use, and creation which exist
that are inhibiting the full adoption of OER. This research will explore the perspectives of K-12 and higher education instructors in various geographical areas on the barriers, incentives, and benefits to OER use to provide various views into this topic for potential policy and sociocultural modifications.
Your participation will involve completing one online survey that will be about 15 minutes
in duration. The survey data will be initially collected and stored on a server in the U.S. and
is subject to access under the US Patriot Act until it is transferred from that server to the
researcher's computer.
All information collected in this study will remain anonymous. No individually-identifiable
information about you, or provided by you during the research, will be collected. All research
data will be kept on a secure drive for which only the principle researchers and their assistants will have access. Data will not be destroyed as we intend to rerun the study at some time inthe future and will pull various reports based on specific demographic information such as geographical area and employment. The study may be replicated in 5 to 10 years.
We hope that you will consider participating in the survey, and you can find the link to the survey here:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/oermovement
Please feel free to forward the survey link and information to other interested people.
Regards,
Serena Henderson, Athabasca University

Subject: Creating a Library Presence in Canvas
Hi all,
I wanted to share this great resource for creating a Library Presence in Canvas. Please share with your librarians.
Creating a Library Presence in Canvas
As California community colleges adopt the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) as part of the state’s Online Education Initiative, librarians have new opportunities to bring library research and information literacy instruction into the online environment. Sponsored by the Council of Chief Librarians, Erin Daniels and Phyllis Usina, librarians at Santa Rosa Junior College, have prepared a guide that identifies ways in which commonly available library services, resources, and programs can be integrated into Canvas. Called, Creating a Library Presence in Canvas , this guide contains features that can be implemented at different levels of the Canvas LMS, including System-wide, Global Navigation, Course Navigation, Module Level, or Page Level.
In addition, the authors created digital examples of those resources that lent themselves to replication by preparing a public Canvas course. Librarians are encouraged to visit the public course to see these examples for potential adaptation, and to download a copy of the 41-page guide.
Find the guide and sample resources in this public Canvas course: https://canvas.santarosa.edu/courses/19390
Special thanks to Erin Daniels and Phyllis Usina for this helpful resource.
