Good afternoon Librarians! I am looking for a systems librarian for a technical consultation. To be more specific, we are moving our repository from Equella to DSpace and want to have permanent identifiers for the collection. DSpace is capable of working with handles and we need verification that there are no Canadian instances of handle registries and if that is correct, we need verification that a long term relationship with Handle.net (via USA) is in our interest. Dear colleagues, Are you interested in learning more about open education, open pedagogy, and what roles are librarians are playing in promoting and supporting open education at their campuses? Please consider joining the BCLA Academic Librarians Section, the BC Open Education Librarians group (BCOEL), BCcampus, and BCIT on Thursday, March 2nd 2017 for "The Future is Open: Libraries and Open Education." We will be gathering in downtown Vancouver from 8:30am to 2:00pm in the BCIT Atrium (Rm 825 - 555 Seymour St, Vancouver, BC V6B 3H6). We are very excited to welcome keynote speaker Dr. Arthur "Gill" Green, who is a passionate advocate for and trailblazing creator of open education resources (OERs). Dr. Green teaches geographic information science and environmental geography as a faculty member at both the University of British Columbia and at Okanagan College. He believes that OER is a core component of responsible, open pedagogical approaches. He is an open textbook author and developer of open source educational software. He is also a 2016 BCcampus Open Textbook Faculty Fellow and a 2016-2017 Hewlett Foundation Open Education Research Fellow. His research on property rights issues in Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and North America has been featured in several international conferences including the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). His current research program examines textbook costs for students in British Columbia, develops best practices for open pedagogy, and creates virtual reality OERs for environmental education. We have started by focusing on courses that have to do with sustainability because there are many courses across our campus that address issues in sustainability in some way and that use case studies to do so. However, we are interested in any courses that use case studies and that want to make them open and available for others to revise and reuse. We have a small number of case studies so far, but hope the numbers will grow in the coming years as more faculty and students become involved. So far all of our cases are from courses at UBC, but we are investigating ways to include contributions from people around BC or beyond. Christina Hendricks, the lead faculty member on the project, will discuss how the project has worked so far, how courses have involved students in reading, adding to, or creating case studies, and how others can get involved. Christina Hendricks is a Professor of Teaching in Philosophy at the University of British Columbia-Vancouver, who is also an advocate for open education generally, including the use and creation of open textbooks and other open educational resources. Presentation title : Faculty Experiences Adopting Openness as a Core Value Presentation Description : This presentation reports on the experiences faculty members designing and developing a Master's degree in Learning and Technology when they adopted openness as a core value and key design principle. A growing body of evidence suggests that adoption of open educational resources (OER), and especially open textbooks, leads to lower costs for students without having negative impacts on academic outcomes (e.g., Hilton, in press; Wiley, Williams, DeMarte, & Hilton, 2016). While the benefits of open textbooks and OER are compelling, little is known about programs that are designed with openness as a core value. What does it mean to embrace open practices and embody an open philosophy at the program and course level within a Master's program? What are faculty experiences with such an approach? How can the student experience be optimized? In what ways does openness support a diverse student body? What tensions arise and what supports are required to facilitate the transition to an MA degree that not only uses open textbooks but is defined by openness? The MA program that we will present represents a case study for the open community. In this degree, students contribute meaningfully to digital learning networks and communities in the field. The degree prepares students to work in the creation and evaluation of digital learning environments and apply theoretical and practical knowledge to critically analyze learning innovations and assess their impact on organizations and society. Openness is central to the achievement of this program goal. Openness was adopted as a program value predicated on the philosophical stance that open practices lead to collaboration and the development of a digital mindset that values sharing and cultivates networked learning. In this case study of an MA program, open practices are evidenced at the course level in the design of the online experience; through the use of "renewable assignments"; authentic assessment opportunities, in resource curation and, through online facilitation approaches. At the program level, it manifests itself in the intentional open spaces that have been designed into the program which require student identification and completion of personalized areas of inquiry. It is also evidenced through the adoption of open pedagogy as a design principle that informs design and delivery decisions at the course and program level Initial tensions such as coming to a common understanding of openness and what openness can be within the constraints of an institution; how openness supports or detracts from online community; the role of openness in the creation of safe learning environments and, ways to support adjunct faculty for designing for openness will be highlighted in this presentation. This MA program is currently under development so by November additional strategies that have been used to develop a common understanding around openness and open pedagogy at the faculty and institutional level will also be discussed. Hello, It is that time of semester when we hopefully see more attention brought to the high cost of textbooks. UVIC made the papers - http://www.saanichnews.com/news/410166795.html#.WHZqlZmgDuo.twitter And here at Douglas, the Douglas College Student Union set up a table set in our concourse area (see attached picture). Information on printed open textbooks

Hello, I thought I would share with you what we do with printed open textbooks in our library collection. We purchase print copies to show faculty the textbook and we use them for displays on open textbooks. However, since some of them do end up in our regular collection, we want to make sure students understand that they are freely available online, so we put a QR code and note on the front of the textbook (see attached). Also, because some of the open textbooks come directly from OpenStax and some come from BCcampus Open textbooks, we now have a series entry for Open Textbooks and it will apply to any open textbook searched by either title or keyword. In a survey conducted by Cengage Learning (2016), the White Paper identifies that Open Educational Resources (OER) will potentially triple in size over the next five years; however, it also exposes that there continues to be barriers to adoption, use, and creation which exist that are inhibiting the full adoption of OER. This research will explore the perspectives of K-12 and higher education instructors in various geographical areas on the barriers, incentives, and benefits to OER use to provide various views into this topic for potential policy and sociocultural modifications. Your participation will involve completing one online survey that will be about 15 minutes in duration. The survey data will be initially collected and stored on a server in the U.S. and is subject to access under the US Patriot Act until it is transferred from that server to the researcher's computer. All information collected in this study will remain anonymous. No individually-identifiable information about you, or provided by you during the research, will be collected. All research data will be kept on a secure drive for which only the principle researchers and their assistants will have access. Hi there everyone, If you have created any OER, you may be interested in participating in the Creative Commons call for submissions (information follows): >From Creative Commons: Since 2014, CC has published an annual State of the Commons report that tracks the growth of CC-licensed content on the web. Last year, we reported a milestone of 1 billion CC-licensed works in the commons . This year, we are shifting our reporting focus to align with our new strategy . We are opening a public call for submissions of commons content, its creators, and the creative uses that have resulted. The submission form is below and asks for the relevant details we need to start visualizing an impactful statistic tied to real use. Hello, You would have recently received an email welcoming you to this new listserv and this is because you were on the BCOER Librarians listserv. As you know from a previous email I sent to this group, we now have a Steering Committee. The Steering Committee decided to change the name to the BC Open Education Librarians (BCOEL) to have a broader scope and not restricted to "resources".
