The Canadian Association of Research Libraries has been monitoring the development of OER for several years, and in 2014 carried out a survey of its members regarding their involvement in OER, subsequently producing a working paper, Open Textbooks: Opportunities for Research Libraries<http://www.carl-abrc.ca/doc/open_educational_resources.pdf>. Four years later, it is clear that library involvement in OER (and open textbooks specifically) has increased substantially. Provincial funding programs and individual projects have been developed across Canada aimed at lowering the cost of student learning materials while also offering instructors accessible content that they can tailor and develop to suit their evolving pedagogical practices. In 2012 BCcampus launched Canada’s first publicly funded open textbook development project, followed by initiatives in Alberta, Manitoba, and most recently through Ontario’s eCampusOntario. Individual OER projects aimed at supporting a specific course or area of study have also cropped up at post-secondary educational institutions throughout Canada, often the result of collaborations involving faculty, librarians, and centres for teaching and learning. Internationally, SPARC has taken a leading role in OER and open education advocacy and training, offering in 2017-2018 a first instance of its in-depth Open Education Leadership Program<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/open-education-leadership-program/> for librarians (a second offering is set to launch this month). To identify needs at the national level related to OER involvement by research libraries, CARL invited ten emerging and established library leaders in OER to a one-day working meeting. The meeting was hosted by York University Libraries and led by York’s Dean of Libraries, Joy Kirchner, who also sits on CARL’s Advancing Research Committee. Also representing CARL was Lise Brin, Program Officer working primarily in open scholarship. The invited participants were: * Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education, SPARC * Dianne Cmor, Associate University Librarian, Teaching & Learning, Concordia University * Inba Kehoe, Copyright Officer and Scholarly Communications Librarian, University of Victoria * Maude Laplante-Dubé, Bibliothécaire-conseil - Diffusion de la recherche, Université Laval * Ann Ludbrook, Copyright and Scholarly Engagement Librarian, Ryerson University * Hope Power, Teaching & Learning Librarian, Simon Fraser University * Stephanie Quail, Business Librarian, York University * Lillian Rigling, Program Coordinator, eCampus Ontario * Ali Versluis, Open Education Librarian, University of Guelph * Amanda Wakaruk, Copyright Librarian, University of Alberta Some of the ideas arising from this day of discussion included: creating a “bootcamp” for librarian leaders in OER based on a train-the-trainer philosophy, implementing a distributed regional network for increasing capacity for OER advocacy and creation within libraries, forging stronger relationships with other OER stakeholder groups, and creating a statement that articulates the case for library involvement in OER. These ideas will be brought to CARL’s Advancing Research Committee and Strengthening Capacity Committee for consideration in the next weeks with a view to confirming next steps into advancing the library involvement in the OER movement in Canada. – 30 – CARL members include Canada’s twenty-nine largest university libraries as well as two national libraries. Open anatomical atlas and anatomy images - expression of interest

Dear Faculty and Staff, BCcampus Open Education is reaching out to all faculty members and staff involved in the teaching and support of anatomy and healthcare post-secondary curricula in B.C. in response to a request from the [ http://www.oeconsortium.org/ | Open Education Consortium ] to identify individuals interested in collaborating on a project that would involve the co-creation of an open anatomical atlas of anatomy images. Background Anatomy is a basic discipline for all medical and paramedical fields around the world. Anatomical illustrations are essential for the teaching and learning of anatomy and are universally relevant in all countries. Good quality artist-created anatomical drawings are available in anatomical atlases and textbooks but are mostly copyrighted. There are very few good quality anatomical images available under an open license. If you think this is a good idea and want to participate in the creation and implementation of an open anatomical atlas, please respond to this email by July 15. A response to this email does not commit you to anything, it merely indicates an interest in this project. Canadian post-secondary faculty: opportunity to review new OER for Open Choice

Hello Everyone, See the below opportunity for all Canadian post-secondary faculty. Open Choice invites Canadian faculty to review OER for their upcoming database Choice, a publishing unit at the Association of College and Research Libraries, plans to release a new online database of open educational resource (OER) reviews called Open Choice. The new service will feature a significant collection of critical reviews of OER targeted to teaching faculty, instructional designers, librarians, and university staff charged with acquiring digital tools for instruction (IT, instructional technologies, etc.). We are looking for active teaching faculty who be interested in reviewing open educational materials for Open Choice. The reviews are more substantive, averaging 2,000-2,500 words, and use a structured review rubric. The rubric provides consistency in reviews and makes them easier to write. All reviews go through a formal copyediting process. We are able to provide a honorarium of $200 for each review. Here are two scenarios that I need you help with: 1. We are building content for an open module. Can we paraphrase and cite copyrighted material, such as studies? 2. Online videos have been created with some ideas based on a book, which is referenced in the videos. Can we cc license these videos? My take is that copyrighted work is constantly cited in journal articles and other matter and then that new material is copyrighted to the new author or journal or whatever, so the above scenarios should be acceptable as long as the materials are not directly copied. BCcampus Pressbooks Major Release Scheduled: March 15-16

Great news! Pressbooks has been making changes to the interface and functionality based on your feedback. The major release for the BCcampus Open Education Pressbooks instances is scheduled for later this month. Here’s a heads up of the changes that are on the way. Most of the improvements are under the hood. However, there are a few big changes we would like to call to your attention. First, a new look and feel is available for the network home page and catalog. The new standalone catalog page is sortable and filterable, for improved discovery. Pressbooks has also given the webbook a much-needed makeover, with some added functionality. A wider book layout, better scrolling and navigation are just some of the enhancements. We have also updated the Open Textbook theme at BCcampus. A big thanks to Ryerson University for supporting the development of these changes. The Luther theme will be retiring on the same day as the new release. In their place, Pressbooks is releasing two new themes, McLuhan and Jacobs. These two themes both offer expanded theme options, and both are designed with textbooks in mind. Their development has been generously funded by [ https://www.ecampusontario.ca/ | eCampus Ontario ] . We will be continuing to use the Open Textbooks as our default theme and the theme for the BCcampus open textbook collection. We are thoroughly testing the updated Pressbooks prior to the release and these improvements should not cause any issues with your existing books. It’s here! (In the past, the “save” button was named Update, Publish, or other variations based on the status of your post.) Note that when you create a new chapter, front or back matter section, you will first see a “Create” button, but subsequent changes can be saved by clicking on the new “Save” button. * Contributor Management: Pressbooks added a centralized contributor management tool where you can add contributors who can then be reused throughout your book as authors, editors, translators, reviewers, illustrators, and generic contributors. * Organize Page Improvements: Pressbooks revamped the Organize page, improving the display on mobile devices, and improving accessibility for keyboard navigation and screen reader users. * Chapter Importing: Now, you can import individual chapters from public, openly licensed Pressbooks webbooks using the Import tool. All you need to drop is drop in the URL to a book, begin the import process, then select the chapters you wish to add to your book. (Content that is private, All Rights Reserved or that carries any of the Creative Commons Non-Derivative licenses cannot be imported.) * Content Visibility: Pressbooks has made it more intuitive to manage the visibility of your content across web and exports. Now you can simply designate content visibility in web and exports on both the Organize page and the edit screen for individual front matter, chapters and back matter. * Import Files from URL: You can now import supported file formats hosted on remote (web based) sources via URL. If you have files hosted elsewhere (with the right permissions), you no longer need to download and upload files, but can import them directly with just the URL. * Ebook Start Point: Pressbooks has moved the ebook start point setting to the ebook Theme Options page to ensure that only one front matter, chapter, or back matter can be set as the ebook start point. (Note that Pressbooks tries to enforce the ebook start point you select. However, ereader devices may still override the start point you designate.) * Language Support Changes: Pressbooks has renamed the Language Support section in Theme Options to Language & Script Support to better reflect its functionality; we’ve also re-labelled Hindi support to Devanagari, to clarify that the Devanagari script supports Hindi, Sanskrit, and over 120 other languages. Post-secondary faculty in British Columbia are eligible to apply for one of three 1-year positions. Successful candidates will help raise awareness of open educational practices through advocacy and will conduct, present, and publish research on open educational practices at B.C. institutions. Embedding restricted videos in an open textbook or other OER

Hi Everyone, Our Open Ed group has a question about the legality of embedding resources that are copyrighted with "all rights reserved" into an open textbook, or other OER. This would be done without obtaining permission from the creator of the resource. Its intent is to recognize the significant role the literature review plays in the research process and to prepare students for the work that goes into writing one. Major areas of philosophy covered are Ethics, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics, Socio-Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics. Survey shows OER on the rise in higher ed

Hello! (Apologies for the cross-posting) The team at Babson Survey Research Group is out today with a report on the use of OER in higher education. The study is based on responses of over 2,700 faculty and there are a number of helpful findings. It also discusses how to execute smart monetary decisions both personally and for their business. There are two versions for this book: The "Basic Edition" and the "Premium Edition." While they cover the same content, the Premium Edition includes additional features such as Excel integration, Excel templates, Excel screenshots, along with lots of extra visuals and graphics to help student wrap their heads around the numbers, procedures, and concepts that they work with. Hello Everyone, The OpenEd team at BCcampus had a discussion this morning about possibly using an "Open Textbook" logo to help faculty learn more about or find open textbooks. One idea is that the logo would be hyperlinked to the [ https://open.bccampus.ca/find-open-textbooks/ | B.C. Open Textbook Collection ] . (This tactic was used for ApplyBC a few years ago and worked well as a visual identifier for students wanting to applying for admission online.) As far as where the logo would be placed, this could be up to each institution and something that can be discussed further. What are your thoughts? Did we lose the limit by license function in their recent interface reboot? It used to be that you could limit to openly licensed material but I can no longer see that filter in the advanced search screen. Unexamined risks can lead to unintended outcomes for any open endeavours. Within these intersections lies an opportunity for open scholarship: to directly examine and acknowledge the tensions and risks inherent in openness, and to thereby create a space in which dialogue is generated and understanding of openness is deepened.
