Dear colleagues, I am writing to let you know about online office hours offered by BCcampus to educators in need of support shifting from face-to-face to online instruction. We are offering three sessions this week, the details of which are included below. Working Together, Learning Together Invitation: To educators and anyone doing the work of “pivoting online” who would like to drop in with questions, and/or to hear others’ challenges and solutions. Who is hosting: BCcampus — a passionate group of instructional designers, learning technologists, administrators, and more! And why… We feel the enormous challenge you are facing today and in the weeks to come. We want to offer support, particularly to institutions and educators without access to a large teaching and learning support team. The first is a student-faculty collaboration to create an open access, online journal publishing the work of KPU Psychology students. This talk will discuss the role that the online authoring and publishing platform Pressbooks has played in this transition. * Using OJS for SFU Course Journal Projects Speaker: Kate Shuttleworth (Community Scholars Librarian and Librarian, Digital Publishing) Description: Kate will share some examples of course journal projects at SFU Library which feature student work and involve students in the production of online, open access journals using Open Journal Systems. Students participate in the scholarly publishing workflow, work together to design and develop the journal, and showcase their written and multimedia assignments. * Practice Makes Perfect: Developing for and Using WeBWorK Open Online Homework in Engineering at UBC Speakers: Agnes d’Entremont (Senior Instructor, Mechanical Engineering) with students Warren Chan, Wan Fong and Tyler Leonizio Description: Practicing problem-solving is an essential part of learning in many engineering courses. WeBWorK is an open online homework system, primarily used in mathematics, which provides instant feedback on practice problems. Over three years, instructors at UBC have developed and deployed over 1000 WeBWorK problems across seven engineering departments. Hello All, The First Nations and Indigenous Studies Program and UBC Library will be hosting an Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/HonouringIndigenousWriters/U…> on March 2nd from 1-4pm at the Sty-Wet-Tan Hall in the First Nations Longhouse at UBC Vancouver campus. Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia based on a model of open community-generated knowledge. This edit-a-thon is seeking to improve the coverage of Indigenous writers on Wikipedia and to encourage diverse community editors to actively work to dissuade assumptions about Indigenous literature by raising their profile in this increasingly influential information source. Attendees will pick authors from a list of Indigenous authors who have approved their inclusion in this event and edit/create their Wikipedia articles. The event is free, catered, and features guest speakers who will share their experiences as Indigenous authors. Please bring your own laptop. Dear colleagues, BCcampus has identified gaps in available open educational resources (OER) for marketing programs in British Columbia. BCcampus will distribute grants to B.C. institutions or their representatives (e.g., faculty members, articulation committees, teaching and learning centres, libraries, and OER working groups) in B.C. and the Yukon for the development of open educational resources in marketing that will contribute to the development of B.C.’s first Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program in marketing. He has asked me for books and sites to learn more and while I have tons, I'm fighting the impulse to deluge him with information. In this webinar, we will talk about how to design OER so they are more inclusive and accessible for all students. This will include an overview of the technical considerations of digital accessibility. For example, what are the minimum technical requirements that ensure students with print disabilities can access and navigate through the resource? We will also look at how inclusive design practices can help us create educational materials that are more versatile and useful for students. For example, what does an accessible resource look like for a student with no personal computer? Or a student with a learning disability that makes reading difficult? Ultimately, students can be very different from each other, and what may work for one student may not work for another. But by designing for those differences, we can create educational materials that are more useful, powerful, and accessible to all. There’s no reason this should exclude OER, but not having MARC fields to highlight the open content was a barrier to discovery. So we decided to solve that through local cataloging rules that track and display the following: • 2 subject headings that indicate a resource is OER (653_6<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd653.html>: uncontrolled genre/form terms): OER and Open educational resources • Attribution Statement which includes the license type (540<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd540.html>: terms governing use and reproduction) • Relationship between print and electronic versions of the same OER (776<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd776.html>: Additional physical form) • Funding source, if the OER was created on a specific grant • Link to original and derivative works (787<https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd787.html>: Other relationship entry) • Course outcomes (sometimes difficult to ascertain without speaking with the author) • OER revision/remix statement – a note from the author explaining how the derivative differs from the original For a detailed explanation of what, how, and why we did this, see our recent article “Leveraging Cataloging and Collection Development Expertise to Improve OER Discovery” OLA Quarterly, Vol. 25, No. 1 (2019)<https://commons.pacificu.edu/olaq/vol25/iss1/6/>. After that went to print, we figured out how to reconfigure our OPAC to make this OER metadata visible to our patrons. Most of the fields above are searchable, particularly the 653_6 field that indicates a resource is OER. Using that field, we built a LibGuides search box that scopes just to the OER bibs in our catalog.
